Generic Drug Prices On The Rise
BOSTON (CBS) — Generic drugs are the workhorses of health care. They are safe, effective, and affordable and they treat everything from migraines to life-threatening illnesses. But in the past few years, pharmacists and their patients have noticed a significant cost increase in some medicines. The prices are so high in some cases that patients are choosing to go without.

Financial Impact of Third-Party Reimbursement Due to Changes in the Definition of ICD-9 Arthroscopy Codes 29880, 29881, and 29877
Conclusion:
Third-party reimbursement rates for cases in 2011 dropped by over 35% for similar cases in 2012. The percentage drop in Medicare payment has been similar to other payers, but the absolute reimbursements are lower. Codes 29875, 29876, and 29879 were used more often in 2012, but the absolute numbers do not balance the decrease in use of code 29877.

The incidence of biceps tenodesis has increased yearly from 2008-2011. Arthroscopic tenodesis has emerged as a more popular technique. Charges associated with the procedure have increased significantly. Significant regional variations in procedural incidences exist.

Gene Test Finds Which Breast Cancer Patients Can Skip Chemo
Many women with early-stage breast cancer can skip chemotherapy without hurting their odds of beating the disease — good news from a major study that shows the value of a gene-activity test to gauge each patient’s risk.
The test accurately identified a group of women whose cancers are so likely to respond to hormone-blocking drugs that adding chemo would do little if any good while exposing them to side effects and other health risks. In the study, women who skipped chemo based on the test had less than a 1 percent chance of cancer recurring far away, such as the liver or lungs, within the next five years.

The Economic Impact of Acetabular Labral Tears: A Cost-effectiveness Analysis Comparing Hip Arthroscopic Surgery and Structured Rehabilitation Alone in Patients Without Osteoarthritis

Hip arthroscopic surgery is more cost-effective and results in a considerably lower incidence of symptomatic OA than structured rehabilitation alone in treating symptomatic labral tears of patients in the second to seventh decades of life without pre-existing OA.

(CNN Money) — Sylvia Rosas decided to go to the emergency room after getting stung by a bee in her yard in Valrico, Florida. She had experienced allergic reactions in the past, but didn’t have an EpiPen on hand.
However, what really hurt was the $12,000 bill she received for the visit to the ER.
The 53-year-old said she was seen by several doctors, who ordered thousands of dollars in blood tests and an EKG during the 2015 visit that lasted less than two hours. Since the hospital was out of network, her insurer wouldn’t cover the visit, and she ended up having to pay the entire bill.

NEW YORK (AP) — Can legalizing marijuana fight the problem of opioid addiction and fatal overdoses? Two new studies in the debate suggest it may.

Many Breast Cancer Patients Can Safely Skip Chemo, Major Study Finds
CHICAGO (CBS News/AP) — Most women with the most common form of early-stage breast cancer can safely skip chemotherapy without hurting their chances of beating the disease, doctors are reporting from a landmark study that used genetic testing to gauge each patient’s risk.
The study is the largest ever done of breast cancer treatment, and the results are expected to spare up to 70,000 patients a year in the United States and many more elsewhere the ordeal and expense of these drugs.

Breast Cancer Testing Guidelines Outdated, Study Says

(CNN) — The current guidelines for genetic testing of breast cancer patients limit the number of women who can get tested. Because of these restrictions, these tests miss as many patients with hereditary cancers as they find, according to a study published Monday in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
