Correlations Among Maternal and Infant Factors, Lead Exposure, and Serum Prolactin Levels During Lactation: A Cross-sectional Study
CONCLUSIONS: Breastfeeding frequency had a stronger positive relationship with serum prolactin levels than protein and calcium intake. However, lead exposure was associated with reduced serum prolactin levels during lactation. Consequently, specific interventions from policymakers are necessary to manage breastfeeding in mothers exposed to lead.PMID:37735831 | DOI:10.3961/jpmph.23.238

Oxalate ‑induced renal pyroptotic injury and crystal formation mediated by NLRP3‑GSDMD signaling < em > in  vitro < /em > and < em > in  vivo < /em >
Mol Med Rep. 2023 Nov;28(5):209. doi: 10.3892/mmr.2023.13096. Epub 2023 Sep 21.ABSTRACTCalcium oxalate kidney stone has become an urgent issue due to its high incidence and recurrence rate. Thus, it is necessary to explore for mechanisms of calcium oxalate stones formation. Previous studies demonstrated that oxalate crystals could induce the activation of nucleotide‑binding domain and leucine‑rich repeat‑containing family pyrin domain‑containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome and change the renal tubular epithelium adhesion. However, the type and molecular mechanism of NLRP3 inflammasome‑mediated calcium oxalate stones f...

3D phantom for image quality assessment of mammography systems
Phys Med Biol. 2023 Sep 21. doi: 10.1088/1361-6560/acfc10. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOBJECTIVE: To present an innovative approach for the design of a 3D mammographic phantom for medical equipment quality assessment, estimation of the glandular tissue percentage in the patient's breast, and emulation of microcalcification ($\mu$C) breast lesions.APPROACH: Contrast-to noise ratio (CNR) measurements, as well as spatial resolution and intensity-to-glandularity calibrations under mammography conditions were performed to assess the effectiveness of the phantom. CNR measurements were applied to different groups of calcium hyd...

How To Avoid China ’ s Medicine Monopoly
I want to share a shocking statistic with you… Around 80% of all the pharmaceuticals sold in America — both prescription and over-the-counter — are manufactured in China. I’m talking about drugs for Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, blood pressure and blood thinners, diuretics, aspirin, antibiotics, and a big chunk of the world’s insulin and diabetes drugs — just to name a few.1 We don’t even make penicillin anymore. The last penicillin plant in the U.S. closed its doors in 2004. Americans who rely on medicine are now almost entirely at the mercy of a country whose relations with the U.S. have become more ...

Mitochondrial dysfunction at the crossroad of cardiovascular diseases and cancer
J Transl Med. 2023 Sep 19;21(1):635. doi: 10.1186/s12967-023-04498-5.ABSTRACTA large body of evidence indicates the existence of a complex pathophysiological relationship between cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Mitochondria are crucial organelles whose optimal activity is determined by quality control systems, which regulate critical cellular events, ranging from intermediary metabolism and calcium signaling to mitochondrial dynamics, cell death and mitophagy. Emerging data indicate that impaired mitochondrial quality control drives myocardial dysfunction occurring in several heart diseases, including cardiac hypertrop...

Risk factors that are associated with adrenal insufficiency among patients with fever of unknown origin
CONCLUSION: In conclusion, 30.1% of FUO patients were diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency. The risk factors that are associated with adrenal insufficiency in FUO patients were immunosuppressive prescription or systemic steroid prescription within 3 months, or with sodium ≥ 136.7 or calcium < 8.4.PMID:37725479 | DOI:10.1080/00325481.2023.2261355

NECAB2 is an endosomal protein important for striatal function
Free Radic Biol Med. 2023 Sep 16:S0891-5849(23)00615-9. doi: 10.1016/j.freeradbiomed.2023.09.003. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSynaptic signaling depends on ATP generated by mitochondria. Dysfunctional mitochondria shift the redox balance towards a more oxidative environment. Due to extensive connectivity, the striatum is especially vulnerable to mitochondrial dysfunction. We found that neuronal calcium-binding protein 2 (NECAB2) plays a role in striatal function and mitochondrial homeostasis. NECAB2 is a predominantly endosomal striatal protein which partially colocalizes with mitochondria. This colocalization is enhance...

Possible misconduct found in papers from Italian minister of health
An Italian newspaper has found duplicated images in eight cancer papers co-authored by the country’s minister of health, Orazio Schillaci. Schillaci, a physician with a Ph.D. in nuclear medicine, published the papers between 2018 and 2022 while working in the faculty of medicine of the University of Rome Tor Vergata. The duplications, reported today by Il Manifesto , include cases in which the same image is presented as showing cells from different tissues or cancers and images supposedly representing cells from different patients that are in reality the same image with a change of scale. Science...

A Case of Hypercalcemic Crisis Due to Parathyroid Adenoma Improved by Continuous Hemodialysis with A Common Calcium Concentration Dialysate: Discussion of Therapeutic Management
Intern Med. 2023 Sep 8. doi: 10.2169/internalmedicine.1764-23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA hypercalcemic crisis due to primary hyperparathyroidism is a life-threatening condition. We herein report a 71-years-old man with hypercalcemic crisis due to primary hyperparathyroidism with parathyroid adenoma. Generally, hemodialysis or continuous hemodiafiltration using calcium-free or low-calcium dialysate is performed early for hypercalcemic crisis. In this case, continuous hemodialysis with a common calcium concentration dialysate improved the hypercalcemic crisis, and parathyroidectomy was performed. The patient recovered ...
