The impact of lung perfusion scintigraphy in the emergency management of patients with suspected pulmonary embolism.
CONCLUSION: LPS has a key role in the early diagnosis but even more in the exclusion of PE, optimizing the management of pts who do not require admission to intensive care unit with high costs and limited availability. LPS confirms to be a simple, quick and inexpensive examination. It does not require preparation and has no side effect so it can be performed in all types of pts including pregnant women, politraumatized and complicated patients, with great impact on resource optimization for intensive care units. Our multi-year and large-scale experience related to a metropolitan area suggests that, to date, given the great...

A compact hyperspectral camera for measurement of perfusion parameters in medicine.
We present a new compact hyperspectral camera which can be used in clinical practice. From hyperspectral data the hemoglobin oxygenation (StO2), the relative concentration of hemoglobin [tissue hemoglobin index (THI)] and the so-called NIR-perfusion index can be determined. The first two parameters are calculated from the VIS-part of the spectrum and represent the perfusion of superficial tissue layers, whereas the NIR-perfusion index is calculated from the NIR-part representing the perfusion in deeper layers. First clinical measurements of transplanted flaps and chronic ulcer wounds show, that the perfusion level can be d...

Focus on the Hand - an Interface Between Surgery and Vascular Medicine.
Abstract Damage to the hand caused by vibration has been observed with a range of trades and professions and in connection with various types of sport. Osseous, neurogenic and vascular lesions can lead to chronic ailments and permanent functional impairment. Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) and hypothenar/thenar hammer syndrome (HHS, THS) are interesting for vascular medicine. From a surgical perspective, there is a special significance in the fact that both syndromes are recognised occupational diseases (BK 2104 and BK 2114) which have to be acknowledged by an accident insurance doctor and in the medical report...

Circulating endothelial progenitor cells biology and regenerative medicine in pulmonary vascular diseases.
Abstract Pulmonary vascular disorders (PVDs) include primary or secondary diseases who ultimately influence the right heart function. Several researches showed that stem and progenitor cells may represent a novel approach in treating pulmonary hypertension. In particular, circulating endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are mobilized either from the bone marrow and/or arteries to replace dysfunctional endothelial cells and restore blood perfusion to ischemic tissues. They may deliver paracrine signals to stimulate local angiogenesis or may be physically incorporated within neovessels. Understanding the molecular me...

High-Throughput Electrophysiology Screen Revealed Cardiotoxicity of Strychnine by Selectively Targeting hERG Channel.
This study established and applied an integrated platform anchored on automatic patch clamp system to screen and evaluate a collection of CHM extracts, compositions and monomeric compounds for in vitro cardiac toxicity. Of 1036 CHM samples screened, 2.79% significantly inhibited hERG channel activity. Among them, Strychnine was identified for the first time as a potent hERG inhibitor with an IC 50 of 6.65±1.04μ M in comparison to that of Dofetilide at 1.80±0.24μ M and Quinidine at 7.42±0.54μ M. Langendorff-perfusion experiments confirmed that strychnine increased QT interphase from 71.69±5.34 ms to 98.61±5.54 ms an...

Association of Primary Hemodilution and Retrograde Autologous Priming with Transfusion in Cardiac Surgery: Analysis of the Perfusion Case Database of the Japanese Society of Extra-Corporeal Technology in Medicine.
Authors: Saito C, Kamei T, Kubota S, Yoshida K, Hibiya M, Hashimoto S Abstract It is important to avoid unnecessary blood cell transfusion. However, the associations of hemodilution and retrograde autologous priming with red blood cell transfusion during and after cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) in cardiac surgery in Japan are currently unclear. We analyzed these associations using data for 3,090 adults from the Perfusion Case Database of the Japanese Society of Extra-Corporeal Technology in Medicine. Percent hemodilution was calculated by total priming volume and weight. Logistic regression models were used to adjust...

Evaluating the necessity of collecting ultra-filtered plasma samples in determining glomerular filtration rate values.
Conclusions: Because the paired t-test produced a p-value of <0.05, the null hypothesis that there is no statistical difference in GFR between original plasma samples and ultrafiltrate samples was rejected. Although there is a statistical difference, this variance is relatively static between samples and may possibly be incorporated into formulas used to calculate GFR. Additional studies could be performed to confirm the uniformity in the percent difference between filtered and unfiltered samples. Furthermore, subsequent studies could be carried out to determine which set of calculated GFR values is more accurate. Ultim...

Molecules, Vol. 24, Pages 4164: Extended Perfusion Parameter Estimation from Hyperspectral Imaging Data for Bedside Diagnostic in Medicine
We present a data processing method for HSI remission spectra based on a five-layer model of perfused tissue that generates perfusion parameters for every layer and presents them as depth profiles. The modeling of the radiation transport and the solution of the inverse problem are based on familiar approximations, but use partially heuristic methods for efficiency and to fulfill practical clinical requirements. Results: The parameter determination process is consistent, as the measured spectrum is practically completely reproducible by the modeling sequence; in other words, the whole spectral information is transformed int...

Nanotechnology Applications in Transplantation Medicine
A recent technological advance that shows promise for applications in health care, including transplantation medicine, is the implementation of nanoparticles. Nanoparticles can be composed of a variety of organic or inorganic materials and confer many advantages over conventional treatments available, such as low toxicity, low-effective dosage required, and a high degree of manipulability. Although also used for imaging and diagnostics, nanoparticles’ utility as a drug or genetic delivery system is of particular interest in transplantation medicine. Currently, researchers are exploring options to integrate nanoparticles ...

The prognostic value of left ventricualr dyssynchrony assessed by GMP-SPECT in patients with ventricular aneurysm.
Conclusions: Left ventricular dyssynchrony analysed by phase analysis of GMP-SPECT has great clinical significance in LVA patient prognostic evaluation. Patients occurred more cardiac events and death with LVMD and BW was the only independent predictor for cardiac events of patients with LV aneurysm. So cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) should be considered for LV aneurysm with baseline LVMD and surgical treatment for these LVA patients would be associated with improved long-term survival.
