What do healthcare workers in elderly care know about occupational health and safety? An explorative survey
Conclusions: Employees in elderly care are well informed about the range of precautionary occupational medical examinations and take advantage of this offering. Questions in the survey regarding hygiene management were answered in a competent manner. On the other hand some gaps in the knowledge about infection prevention and occupational safety became apparent. Differences between qualified and unqualified participating professionals occurred only in the knowledge of infectious diseases and pathogens and the associated path of infection. The extent to which training can help to improve infection prevention and occupational...

The BASHH MSM special interest group
How do we tackle the poor sexual health of gay and bisexual men? The lives of many men-who-have-sex- with-men (MSM) in the UK, as in many other Western liberal democracies, have undergone the most extraordinary social changes in less than two decades. In the UK, these have included the legalisation of marriage, equality in health, parental and employment rights and an increasing mainstream acceptance of gay (and to a lesser extent bisexual) men that extends from sport to soap operas. In stark contrast, rates of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection in MSM, compared with most other groups, are stable or rising in alm...

Uganda: HIV-Aids - Focus On Vulnerable Groups
[Monitor] Sometimes, it feels like the fight against HIV/Aids will never end. Each year, a report is released; it might be one showing what new trends are among those infected, or one stating the new challenges pharmacists are meeting in the struggle to come up with a vaccine. What must be applauded is the determination of those involved to find a cure and a way to reduce the risk people are exposed to. What must be acknowledged though is that there are still many hurdles to jump in the fight.

Assessment of the Safety and Immunogenicity of 2 Novel Vaccine Platforms for HIV-1 Prevention: A Randomized Trial.
Conclusion: Both vaccines elicited significant immune responses in all populations. Baseline vector immunity did not significantly affect responses. Second vaccinations in all regimens significantly boosted EnvA antibody titers, although vaccine order in the heterologous regimen had a modest effect on the immune response. The Internet of Things & Infectious Disease
The Internet of Things and Infectious Disease The Internet of Things (IoT) is all about devices that are programmed to sense, report on and react to certain behaviours or conditions, providing a new level of efficiency, evidence-based data and automation.  According to Forbes (McCue, 2015), the IoT market for healthcare will reach $117 billion by 2020. Exciting and life-changing leaps have already been made: wearable glucose meters, fertility sensors and fever monitors are already available, both for the individual consumer and in healthcare settings; sensors in freezers ensure a technician is notified if the temperature ...

The effect of electronic patient records on hepatitis B vaccination completion rates at a genitourinary medicine clinic
The study was conducted to assess whether the introduction of an electronic patient records-based system affected hepatitis B vaccination completion rates and post-vaccination return rates, when compared to a paper-based system. Data were gathered for three groups of patients: those commencing vaccination (a) when paper records were in use (paper records group), (b) after electronic patient records were introduced (basic electronic patient records group) and (c) after electronic patient records were enhanced with recall (enhanced electronic patient records group). Compared to the paper records group, the third dose complet...
