Rapid Deployment of Whole Slide Imaging for Primary Diagnosis in Surgical Pathology at Stanford Medicine
CONCLUSIONS.—: WSI across all surgical subspecialities is achievable at scale at an academic medical center; however, adoption required flexibility to adjust workflows and develop tailored solutions. WSI at scale supported the health and safety of medical staff while facilitating high-quality patient care and education during COVID-19 restrictions.PMID:35802938 | DOI:10.5858/arpa.2021-0438-OA

University College London Uses 3D Printers to Create Custom Prescriptions, What Does That Mean for Clinical Laboratories and Precision Medicine?
As 3D printing technology gains acceptance with pharmaceutical companies, clinical laboratories could see increased demand for pharmacogenomic testing Will physicians someday “print” prescription drugs for patients in-office? It sounds like science fiction, but research being conducted at the University College London (UCL) indicates the capability may be closer than we think, and it could bring […] The post University College London Uses 3D Printers to Create Custom Prescriptions, What Does That Mean for Clinical Laboratories and Precision Medicine? appeared first on Dark Daily.

Precision Medicine May Have a New Lung Cancer Treatment That Can Be Staged with an EGFR Test as a Companion Diagnostic
There’s evidence that a cancer drug can cut deaths from lung cancer by as much as 50% when pathology testing indicates the patient has the EGFR mutation Results from a decade-long clinical trial indicate that lung cancer patients with the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutation have significantly better survival rates when treated with the […] The post Precision Medicine May Have a New Lung Cancer Treatment That Can Be Staged with an EGFR Test as a Companion Diagnostic appeared first on Dark Daily.

Bias in Laboratory Medicine: The Dark Side of the Moon
Ann Lab Med. 2024 Jan 1;44(1):6-20. doi: 10.3343/alm.2024.44.1.6. Epub 2023 Sep 4.ABSTRACTPhysicians increasingly use laboratory-produced information for disease diagnosis, patient monitoring, treatment planning, and evaluations of treatment effectiveness. Bias is the systematic deviation of laboratory test results from the actual value, which can cause misdiagnosis or misestimation of disease prognosis and increase healthcare costs. Properly estimating and treating bias can help to reduce laboratory errors, improve patient safety, and considerably reduce healthcare costs. A bias that is statistically and medically signifi...
