Social impact of end-stage renal disease requiring hemodialysis among patients with type-2 diabetes and their caregivers in Bengaluru, Karnataka
Conclusion: We conclude that the social impact of ESRD among type 2 diabetics requiring hemodialysis and their caregivers was moderate. Routine counseling of patients receiving haemodialysis and support groups for patients as well as caregivers will help reduce the impact.

Developing and validating a prognostic prediction model for patients with chronic kidney disease stages 3-5 based on disease conditions and intervention methods: a retrospective cohort study in China
Conclusions We constructed a prediction model to predict the prognosis of patients with CKD stages 3–5 in the first and second year. Applying this model to clinical practice may guide clinical decision-making. Also, this model needs to be externally validated in the future. Trial registration number ChiCTR1900024633 (http://www.chictr.org.cn).

Pig Organ Transplants Inch Closer With Testing in Brain-Dead Patients
New York researchers transplanted pig hearts into two brain-dead people over the last month, the latest in a string of developments in the long quest to one day save human lives with animal organs. The experiments announced Tuesday come after a historic but failed attempt earlier this year to use a pig’s heart to save a dying Maryland man — sort of a rehearsal before scientists try again in the living. Among the lessons: Practice with the deceased is important. “We learned so much from the first one that the second one is much better,” said Dr. Nader Moazami, who led the operations at NYU Langone He...

Targeted inhibition of tumor-derived exosomes as a novel therapeutic option for cancer
Experimental & Molecular Medicine, Published online: 18 September 2022; doi:10.1038/s12276-022-00856-3Inhibiting or removing tumor-derived exosomes (TDEs), tiny membrane-bound packets of DNA, RNA, and proteins secreted by tumors, may improve cancer therapies. TDEs can suppress the body’s immune response, promote tumor progression and spread, and reduce efficacy of cancer drugs and immunotherapy. Gang Chen at Wuhan University, China, and co-workers have reviewed ways to remove or inhibit production of TDEs. They report that disruption of the genes for production of TDEs, drugs that inhibit TDE secretion, and removal o...

Physicians as Owners and Agents —A Call for Further Study
Physicians act as gatekeepers in the US health care system, helping patients decide what care to seek and where to seek it, as well as coordinating and evaluating the care they ultimately receive. This unique position of authority could lead to conflicts of interest, however, if financial incentives influence physicians ’ recommendations at the expense of patients or payers. In their cross-sectional cohort study in this issue of JAMA Internal Medicine, Lin et al therefore make an important contribution by studying how physicians’ ownership of dialysis facilities is associated with patient care and outcomes. Usi ng owne...

Coronary Heart Disease Testing Before Kidney Transplant —A Call for Revised Guidance
End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is a debilitating chronic illness for which kidney transplant is the treatment of choice, as it reduces mortality, improves quality of life, and lowers costs compared with dialysis. Professional societies recommend cardiac evaluation for transplant candidacy because patients with ESKD are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease. There has been substantial debate regarding the risks and benefits of such pretransplant evaluation, but to our knowledge few clinical data. To fill this evidence gap, the study in a recent issue of JAMA Internal Medicine by Cheng and colleagues examined the asso...

Original research gender differences in recovering from cardiac and vascular surgery associated acute kidney injury: A six-year retrospective comparative study in Nigeria
Conclusion: Males with AKI were younger than the females. Valvular surgeries were most common. Background kidney dysfunction and advance age were risk factors for AKI. Postoperative, AKI was commoner in males who were more likely to recover full kidney function. Optimizing patient preparation could reduce the incidence of CVS-AKI.

Unsupervised clustering identifies sub-phenotypes and reveals novel outcome predictors in patients with dialysis-requiring sepsis-associated acute kidney injury
CONCLUSIONS: Our data-driven approach suggests sub-phenotypes with clinical relevance in dialysis-requiring SA-AKI and serves an outcome predictor. This strategy represents further development toward precision medicine in the definition of high-risk sub-phenotype in patients with SA-AKI.Key messagesUnsupervised consensus clustering can identify sub-phenotypes of patients with SA-AKI and provide a risk prediction.Examining the features of patient heterogeneity contributes to the discovery of serum lactate levels ≥ 3.3 mmol/L upon initializing RRT as an independent outcome predictor. This data-driven approach can be useful ...

Outcome of COVID-19 infection and the impact of COVID-19 vaccination in chronic kidney disease patients: A single-center study
Conclusion: Vaccination seems to be very helpful in combating the adverse effect of Covid-19 in CKD patients. It also reduces mortality significantly in Covid-19 infected CKD patients.
