Parameters Influencing the Accuracy of a Wrist Photoplethysmography Heart-Rate Monitor (Polar Unite) During Exercise
CONCLUSION: The accuracy of heart rate measured with a wrist photoplethysmography monitor is affected by the tightness of the wristband and the phase of the signal. A high tightening is required when high accuracy is expected.PMID:36805933 | DOI:10.1123/ijspp.2022-0288

Clinical study of comprehensive TCM therapy in the treatment of damp and hot stasis erectile dysfunction
This study will provide preliminary evidence for the efficacy and safety of traditional Chinese medicine integrated therapy in the treatment of damp-heat stasis ED. In addition, it also provides a basis for the clinical application of Chinese medicine comprehensive therapy and the construction of Chinese medicine andrology rehabilitation system. Trial registration: Chinese clinical trial registration identifier, ChiCTR2200062016, registered on July 19, 2022.

Breviscapine Injection Improves the Therapeutic Effect of Western Medicine on Angina Pectoris Patients
by Chuan Wang, Yafeng Li, Shoucui Gao, Daxin Cheng, Sihai Zhao, Enqi Liu To evaluate the beneficial and adverse effects of breviscapine injection in combination with Western medicine on the treatment of patients with angina pectoris. The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Medline, Science Citation Index, EMBASE, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, the Wanfang Database, the Chongqing VIP Information Database and the China Biomedical Database were searched to identify randomized clinical trials (RCTs) that evaluated the effects of Western medicine compared to breviscapine injection plus Western medicin...

Comparative efficacy of Chinese herbal injections for angina pectoris: A Bayesian network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
CONCLUSIONS: Eligible Chinese herbal injections plus western medicine therapy might have a better impact on angina pectoris patients than western medicine therapy alone. While this study had limitations, the findings should be interpreted with caution. In addition, more high-quality randomized controlled trials with a large sample must be conducted to support this study. PMID: 30935533 [PubMed - in process]

Efficacy and safety of acupuncture combined with Chinese herbal medicine in the treatment of angina pectoris of coronary heart disease (CHD): A protocol for systematic review and meta analysis
CONCLUSION: Acupuncture combined with Chinese herbal medicine can effectively relieve the clinical symptoms of CHD and angina pectoris and improve the performance of electrocardiograph. At the same time, it can reduce the cardiovascular regulatory peptide ET and increase the level of cGRP in the patient's plasma, thus confirming its effectiveness and safety.PMID:34967384 | DOI:10.1097/MD.0000000000028450

Book and Other Media Reviews
It seems that every month there are new books published in the field of emergency medicine. Many are sub-specialty texts on emergency ultrasound, emergency neurology, or emergency infectious disease, but a significant number are “handbooks.” I generally find these books to be too superficial and not useful, either as reference books or as bedside tools in the Emergency Department. The text reviewed here is the exception. I approached this work with my usual trepidation, but found that every time I needed to know something, this book gave me the answer. This book is authored by six physicians from the United Kingdom, Ca...

Preoperative evaluation of adult patients before elective, noncardiothoracic surgery : Joint recommendation of the German Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine, the German Society of Surgery, and the German Society of Internal Medicine.
Abstract Evaluation of the patient's medical history and a physical examination are the cornerstones of risk assessment prior to elective surgery, and may help to optimize the patient's preoperative medical condition and guide perioperative management. Whether performance of additional technical tests (e. g., blood chemistry, electrocardiography, spirometry, chest x‑ray) can contribute to reduction of the perioperative risk is often not well known or controversial. Similarly, there is considerable uncertainty among anesthesiologists, internists, and surgeons with respect to perioperative management of the pat...

BMC Biomedical Engineering: the BMC series expands into engineering!
I am delighted to announce that BMC Biomedical Engineering, a new open access, peer-reviewed journal is now open for submissions and with it the BMC series enters for the first time a new subject area: engineering. This is the first of two newly launched journals in the BMC series. Editor Harriet Manning discusses the launch of BMC Chemical Engineering in her blog post. 2018 has been declared as the “Year of Engineering” by the UK government, an initiative that has seen wide support by hundreds of national and international organisations. We see no better time to expand our offering to this diverse and crucial communit...
