Comparison of Heart Rate Variability Recording With Smart Phone Photoplethysmographic, Polar H7 Chest Strap and Electrocardiogram Methods.
CONCLUSION: Both PPG and heart rate sensor provide an acceptable agreement for the measurement of rMSSD when compared with ECG. Smartphone PPG technology may be a preferred method of HRV data collection for athletes due to its practicality and ease of use in the field. PMID: 28290720 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Validity of a Smartphone Application and Chest Strap for Recording RR Intervals at Rest in Athletes.
CONCLUSION: The smartphone app and chest strap provide excellent ECG compliance for all variables in the time domain, frequency domain, and nonlinear indexes, regardless of the assessed position. Therefore, the smartphone app replaces ECG for any heart-rate-variability analysis in runners. PMID: 32163924 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Early achievements in cardiovascular care as reflected in the Journal of Internal Medicine
Abstract This review mirrors progress in cardiovascular medicine as reflected by scientific contributions published in the Journal of Internal Medicine (from 1989), Acta Medica Scandinavica (from 1919 until 1989) and Nordiskt Medicinskt Arkiv (before 1919). A total of 149 articles were identified within this field since the first, published work in this field 1877–1970. The latter year was set as and end for the review since this was the year the first contribution by the author of this review was published in the journal. Screening for atrial fibrillation during automated blood pressure measurement among patients admitted to internal medicine ward
AbstractAtrial fibrillation (AF), the commonest sustained cardiac arrhythmia affecting the adult population, is often casually discovered among hospitalized people. AF onset is indeed triggered by several clinical conditions such as acute inflammatory states, infections, and electrolyte disturbance, frequently occurring during the hospitalization. We aimed to evaluate whether systematic AF screening, performed through an automated oscillometric blood pressure (BP) device (Microlife WatchBP Office AFIB, Microlife AG, Switzerland), is effective for detecting AF episodes in subjects admitted to an Internal Medicine ward. 163 ...

Validation of a Script Concordance Test Combined with ECG during an Emergency Medicine Clerkship Rotation
One of the emergency physician's challenges is to think, to act, and to treat patients with a high level of uncertainty (for instance: incomplete past history of the patient, life-threatening decisions with poor clinical information). In recent years, Script Concordance Tests (SCTs) are increasingly used by educators to assess clinical reasoning, especially in situations of uncertainty. They compare the responses of examinees (students, trainees, or residents) with those of a panel of experts (PE). The examinee's answers are scored based on the level of agreement with responses provided by a PE. In recent years, teachers i...

Traditional chinese medicine injection for angina pectoris: an overview of systematic reviews.
Abstract Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) injection is widely used to treat angina pectoris in China. This overview aims to systematically summarize the general characteristics of systematic reviews (SRs) on TCM injection in treating angina, and assess the methodological and reporting quality of these reviews. We searched PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library and four Chinese databases from inception until March 2013. Data were extracted according to a preset form. The AMSTAR and PRISMA checklists were used to explore the methodological quality and reporting characteristics of included reviews, respectively. All ...

The efficacy and safety of Chinese herbal medicine, Rhodiola formulation in treating ischemic heart disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
CONCLUSION: Rhodiola formulations may have a positive effect on treating IHD alone and in combination with RWM. However, poor quality of methodology and heterogeneity of the included trials means that larger sample size, multi-center, placebo-controlled, double blind studies are needed. Oral Chinese proprietary medicine for angina pectoris: An overview of systematic reviews/meta-analyses.
CONCLUSIONS: Though many systematic reviews/meta-analyses on oral CPM for angina suggested potential benefits or definitely positive effects, stakeholders should interpret the findings of these reviews with caution, considering the overall limited methodological and reporting quality. We recommend further studies should be appropriately conducted and systematic reviews reported according to PRISMA standard. PMID: 25146083 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Effective Heart Disease Detection Based on Quantitative Computerized Traditional Chinese Medicine Using Representation Based Classifiers.
Authors: Shu T, Zhang B, Tang YY Abstract At present, heart disease is the number one cause of death worldwide. Traditionally, heart disease is commonly detected using blood tests, electrocardiogram, cardiac computerized tomography scan, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, and so on. However, these traditional diagnostic methods are time consuming and/or invasive. In this paper, we propose an effective noninvasive computerized method based on facial images to quantitatively detect heart disease. Specifically, facial key block color features are extracted from facial images and analyzed using the Probabilistic Colla...
