Unvaccinated Kids In Mass. Can Seek Immunization Without Parental Permission
BOSTON (CBS) — More than 40 cases of measles, most in children under 10, have been reported in Washington State, largely because parents are not getting their kids vaccinated. Now unvaccinated children themselves are asking how they can get their shots without their parents’ consent. Measles was essentially eliminated back in 2000 yet, last year, we saw the second highest rate of measles cases since that time. According to an article in Newsweek, unvaccinated teens who are worried that they might get sick are turning to the internet to seek advice on how to get immunized and how to prove to their so-called “a...

FDA May Step In If States Don ’ t Tighten Vaccine Laws
BOSTON (CBS) – Routine childhood vaccines are required to stay in school, but more and more parents are opting out for what they call personal or religious reasons. Now, the head of the FDA says the federal government may have to step in if states don’t strengthen their vaccine laws. Seventeen states allow families to skip vaccines for personal beliefs. Forty-seven states, including Massachusetts, allow religious exemptions. A child gets a vaccine. (WBZ-TV photo) As a result, we’re seeing outbreaks of potentially deadly diseases that were once eradicated, like measles. In fact, there have been at least 12...

Study: MMR Vaccine Does Not Cause Autism
BOSTON (CBS) — A new large study should reassure parents there is no link between the measles, mumps, rubella vaccine, and autism. Unfortunately, despite all of the evidence to the contrary, there are some parents who still worry that getting the shot will trigger autism in their children. This new study should finally put the issue to rest. Researchers looked at more than a half million children born in Denmark over 10 years. They found absolutely no increased risk of developing autism after getting the MMR vaccine. They also found that even in children at risk, the vaccine did not trigger autism in those kids. Mean...

Are You Protected From The Measles?
BOSTON (CBS) — There have been almost 700 measles cases identified in the U.S. so far this year, the highest number since the disease was eliminated in 2000, leading many to wonder whether they need a booster to stay protected from this growing threat. All kids need to get two measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccines, usually around one year of age and again around age four. For adults, if you were born before 1957, you’re probably already immune. But if you were born after 1957, you should have documentation of at least one measles-containing vaccine. If you’re just not sure, you can either have a blood te...

BOSTON (CBS) — A third-grader at Otis Elementary School in Boston has tested positive for the mumps, the school principal told parents Friday. “We do not believe the student has come into close contact with any students in our school who are not vaccinated. According to policies by Boston Public Schools, Boston Public Health Commission, and Department of Public Health, all students are required to show documentation that they received th...

New Hampshire Child Didn ’ t Have Measles, Had Vaccine Reaction
KEENE, N.H. (CBS) – A child in New Hampshire who was initially diagnosed with the measles last week actually had a reaction to the vaccine and is not infected with the virus, the state’s Department of Health and Human Services said Thursday. The department released a statement Sunday warning the public that a child had been diagnosed with infectious measles and had been at three locations in Keene. But further lab tests revealed that this was not an infection but rather a reaction to the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine, which is made using a weakened version of the virus to build up a person’s immun...

US Measles Cases Reach Highest Number In Nearly 3 Decades, CDC Says
(CNN) — There have been 971 cases of measles reported in the United States this year, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday. This means 2019, which is not quite half over, now has the greatest number of cases in a single year in nearly three decades. The number of cases in 1994 was 963, which was lower than in 1992 when there were 2,237 cases. “Measles is preventable and the way to end this outbreak is to ensure that all children and adults who can get vaccinated, do get vaccinated. Again, I want to reassure parents that vaccines are safe, they do not cause autism. The greater danger i...

Pinterest Searches About Vaccines Will Bring Up Content From Public Health Organizations

Financial Penalty May Lead To Better Vaccination Rates, Study Shows
BOSTON (CBS) — Routine childhood vaccines are often required for entry into school, but does making vaccines mandatory actually improve immunization rates? And what if families had to pay a penalty for failing to vaccinate? A new study in the journal Pediatrics aimed to answer these questions. Researchers looked at 29 European countries and found those that legally mandate vaccinations for measles and pertussis or whooping cough, for example, had higher vaccination rates than countries that did not mandate them. In countries with mandatory vaccination that did not allow families to opt-out for religious or other non-...
