Neural and Psychosocial Mechanisms of Pain Sensitivity in Fibromyalgia
Abstract: Fibromyalgia is a chronic musculoskeletal pain disorder that affects an estimated 5 million adults in the US. The hallmark is burning, searing, tingling, shooting, stabbing, deep aching, or sharp pain. Fibromyalgia is generally considered to be a “central sensitivity syndrome” where central sensitization is regarded as the cause of pain in its own right. Nonetheless, the case continues to be made that all central and spatially distributed peripheral components of fibromyalgia pain would fade if the peripheral generators could be silenced. Although neural mechanisms are clearly important in pain sensitivity, c...

Problems and Solutions for Patients with Fibromyalgia: Building New Helping Relationships
ConclusionThe majority of patients’ problems were associated with their previous history and the onset of fibromyalgia; which may be related to trauma in adolescence, early adulthood or later. The solutions provided during the groups appeared to be accepted by the participants. These findings can improve the self‐management of fibromyalgia patients by helping to enhance adaptive behaviours and incorporating the female gender approach. This article is protected by copyright. Effectiveness of Guided Imagery Relaxation on Levels of Pain and Depression in Patients Diagnosed With Fibromyalgia
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of guided imagery as a nursing intervention for pain management and depression in patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Background: Many studies support the use of guided imagery to improve patient outcomes. Guided imagery has been used for different purposes and it is thought to be an effective intervention for people suffering from nonmalignant pain. Design: A 2-group quasi-experimental study was conducted during 8 weeks by the University of Nursing in Almeria (Spain). Methods: Patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia aged 18 to 70 years (n = 60) were randomly assigned t...

Attachment styles, pain intensity and emotional variables in women with fibromyalgia
This study aims to explore the relations between attachment styles and pain intensity and certain emotional variables (anxiety, depression and alexithymia) in a sample of fibromyalgia patients, in comparison with healthy women. Data were collected from 146 women with fibromyalgia and 122 healthy women. The variables studied were attachment style, pain intensity, anxiety, depression and alexithymia dimensions. Patients with fibromyalgia showed lower percentages of secure attachment style (69.9% vs. 86%) whilst showing higher avoidant attachment (19.8% vs. 7.4%), as well as increased numbers of anxious–ambivalent attachmen...

The 6-Minute Walk Test in Female Fibromyalgia Patients: Relationship With Tenderness, Symptomatology, Quality of Life, and Coping Strategies
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the 6-minute walk test (6-MWT) and tenderness, symptomatology, quality of life, and coping strategies in women with fibromyalgia. One hundred eighteen women with fibromyalgia aged 51.9 ± 7.3 years participated in the study. The examination included the 6-MWT, tender points, and the following questionnaires: Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ), Short-Form Health Survey 36 (SF-36), and Vanderbilt Pain Management Inventory. Fair correlations between the 6-MWT and the subscales of physical impairment (FIQ) and physical function (SF-36) were observ...

Fibromyalgia: clinical features, diagnosis and management.
Abstract Patients with fibromyalgia experience chronic widespread pain, with associated symptoms of fatigue, sleep disturbance and memory problems. There are many therapies which may be helpful in managing the symptoms of fibromyalgia; however, these often require a process of trial and error to establish optimum management using a combination of pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. Nurses can support patients with fibromyalgia using a biopsychosocial approach to symptom management. Understanding the nature of fibromyalgia and management options will enable nurses to deliver holistic patient-centred...

Perceptions about the sexuality of women with fibromyalgia syndrome: a phenomenological study
ConclusionDespite limitations, sexuality is important for the identity and quality of life of women with fibromyalgia syndrome. Together with the physical symptomology, guilt, fear and a lack of understanding compromise the coping process. Women need the support of their partner, their socio‐family environment and health professionals. Nurses can aid the successful adjustment to sexual problems related to fibromyalgia syndrome. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Effect of Music as Nursing Intervention for People Diagnosed with Fibromyalgia
Abstract: Primary fibromyalgia, a poorly understood chronic pain syndrome, is a disorder of uncertain etiology. The ultimate goal of fibromyalgia treatment is to develop a multimodal therapy. In recent years, the use of music as an intervention for the pain management and other symptoms has increased. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of music on pain and depression for people diagnosed with fibromyalgia using Rogers’ theory of the unitary human being as the theoretical framework. An experimental 4-week longitudinal trial design was undertaken. Sixty patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia were random...

Early Experience with a Brief, Multimodal, Multidisciplinary Treatment Program for Fibromyalgia
Abstract: Fibromyalgia is a complex heterogeneous disorder for which a multidisciplinary individualized approach is currently advocated. We executed a 1-week multidisciplinary fibromyalgia clinical program with seven patients, based on our experience with our existing 1.5-day multidisciplinary fibromyalgia program that has demonstrated both short- and long-term benefits. The current expanded program was not designed as a clinical study, but rather as a clinical feasibility assessment, and it was multidisciplinary in nature, with cognitive behavioral therapy, activity pacing, and graded exercise therapy as major components....

Fibromyalgia Impact and Mindfulness Characteristics in 4,986 People with Fibromyalgia
A growing body of literature suggests that mindfulness techniques may be beneficial in fibromyalgia. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis of six trials indicated improvement in depressive symptoms and quality of life, calling for increased rigor and use of standardized measures in future trials. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between mindfulness (as measured by the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ)) and fibromyalgia impact (as measured by the Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQR)).

Implementation of Health Information Technology in Routine Care for Fibromyalgia: Pilot Study
Fibromyalgia management remains complicated and challenging. Health information technology is an evidence-based, nonpharmacological self and symptom management strategy, but few studies have evaluated its feasibility for managing fibromyalgia patients in clinical practice. FibroGuide is an example of an evidence-based, interactive, and computer-based program comprised of 10 educational modules on fibromyalgia. Study aims were to: (1) develop a process for implementing FibroGuide into the routine care of patients with fibromyalgia, (2) evaluate the overall impact on fibromyalgia before and after a 12-week implementation, a...

Benefits of a Home Treatment Program Using Guided Imagery Relaxation Based on Audio Recordings for People With Fibromyalgia
This study sought to determine the effectiveness of a home program of audio-recorded guided imagery relaxation on people with fibromyalgia. This experimental 8-week longitudinal trial design was undertaken with 60 people diagnosed with fibromyalgia who were randomly assigned to either a guided imagery intervention group or a control group. Pain at tender points, anxiety, self-efficacy, quality of sleep, quality of life, and the impact of the fibromyalgia were determined at baseline, at 4 weeks, and at 8 weeks. After the guided imagery intervention, we found significant differences regarding trait anxiety, sleep quality, an...
