Comorbidities of self ‐reported fibromyalgia in United States adults: A cross‐sectional study from The National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC‐III)
ConclusionsParticipants with self ‐reported fibromyalgia have a higher prevalence of comorbid mental and physical disorders, and lower mean levels of mental and physical quality of life than their counterparts without fibromyalgia.SignificanceWe showed here a strong association of self ‐reported fibromyalgia with both mental and physical comorbidities. We showed that among participants with self‐reported fibromyalgia, more than 8 out of 10 had at least three other physical comorbidities, and almost half had at least three mental comorbidities. This is a cross‐sectional study using a representative sample of the US ...

The Perception of Female Smokers with Fibromyalgia on the Effects of Smoking on Fibromyalgia Symptoms
DiscussionSmokers with fibromyalgia reported smoking helped to cope with fibromyalgia pain but generally did not directly ameliorate fibromyalgia physical symptoms.

Diagnosis of Fibromyalgia: Disagreement Between Fibromyalgia Criteria and Clinician-Based Fibromyalgia Diagnosis in a University Clinic.
CONCLUSION: There is considerable disagreement between ICD clinical diagnosis and criteria-based diagnosis of fibromyalgia, calling into question ICD-based studies. Fibromyalgia criteria were easy to use, but problems regarding clinician bias, meaning of a fibromyalgia diagnosis, and the validity of physician diagnosis were substantial. Objective evidence that small-fiber polyneuropathy underlies some illnesses currently labeled as fibromyalgia
Summary: Comparing symptoms, examinations, skin biopsies, and autonomic functions in fibromyalgia as opposed to control subjects suggests that approximately half of fibromyalgia patients have previously unrecognized small-fiber polyneuropathy.Abstract: Fibromyalgia is a common, disabling syndrome that includes chronic widespread pain plus diverse additional symptoms. No specific objective abnormalities have been identified, which precludes definitive testing, disease-modifying treatments, and identification of causes. In contrast, small-fiber polyneuropathy (SFPN), despite causing similar symptoms, is definitionally a dise...

The value of inquiring patients about local discomfort during blood pressure measurement for fibromyalgia detection. A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: Inquiring female patients about local discomfort during routine blood pressure measurement is a simple and efficient procedure for fibromyalgia detection. This undemanding approach could be implemented in all clinical settings. There is marked sexual dimorphism in the link between sphygmomanometry-induced allodynia and fibromyalgia diagnosis. The presence of fibromyalgia is almost certain in those individuals having substantial pain elicitation during blood pressure measurement.PMID:37229846 | DOI:10.1016/j.semarthrit.2023.152218

Fibromyalgia Flares: A Qualitative Analysis
ConclusionsOur results demonstrate that periods of symptom exacerbation (i.e., flares) are commonly experienced by patients with fibromyalgia and symptoms of flares can be differentiated from every day or typical symptoms of fibromyalgia. Our study is the first of its kind to qualitatively explore characteristics, causes, and management strategies of fibromyalgia flares. Future studies are needed to quantitatively characterize fibromyalgia flares and evaluate mechanisms of flares.

Should a Coexisting or Suspected Diagnosis of Fibromyalgia Affect the Decision to Perform Diagnostic Blocks for Patients with Chronic Noncancer Pain - Results from an Observational Research Study
CONCLUSION: We conclude that after physician selection, the presence of fibromyalgia phenotype does not influence the outcome from diagnostic block. It is likely therefore that fibromyalgia phenotype should not influence the decision to perform diagnostic blocks if indicated based on assessment by an experienced pain physician.PMID:33740354

Aberrant Analgesic Response to Medial Branch Blocks in Patients With Characteristics of Fibromyalgia
Conclusions: Characteristics of fibromyalgia may indicate pain that is more centralized in nature, a factor that may explain the aberrant analgesic response to this peripheral intervention. This may have implications for future prediction of treatment response, although prospective studies are needed.

Subjective Experiences and Sensitivities in Women with Fibromyalgia: A Quantitative and Comparative Study.
This study presents subjective experiences and sensitivities reported by fibromyalgia patients, which should be considered in primary care to avoid medical nomadism, as well as stigmatization of the patients. The prevalence of significant characteristics was compared with others patients consulting at the same pain unit who suffer from rebel and disabling form of chronic migraine. Psychometric tests were anonymously completed by 78 patients of the Pain Unit (44 fibromyalgia patients and 34 migraine patients). Tests evaluated pain (Visual Analog scale), childhood traumas (Childhood Trauma Questionnaire), lack of parental af...

Altered regulation of negative affect in patients with fibromyalgia: A diary study
ConclusionsCurrent findings support the idea that patients with fibromyalgia are confronted with fluctuating emotions. These results may have important implications for treatment as they provide support for the use of emotion regulation skills training in patients with fibromyalgia to impact upon NA instability.SignificanceThis study provides novel insight in the link between emotion regulation indices, that is, heart ‐rate variability and negative affective (NA) instability, in patients with fibromyalgia, and presents evidence for differences in both emotion regulation indices between patients with fibromyalgia and healt...
