Coupons, PBM ' s ... oh my!
Over the past few years, my coverage of coupon-generating websites/apps has increased by a lot in this blog because those have emerged as a critical way for patients to get prescriptions at lower, PBM-negotiated prices even if they have yet to satisfy an annual insurance deductible or they have no insurance at all. In general, coupon-generating websites/apps offer consumers access to the deeper pharmacy benefits manager ( " PBM " )-negotiated prices on prescription drugs, at prices which are often substantially less than the prices you could otherwise attain as a consumer without the benefit of a commercial healthcare...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, May 16th 2016
In this study the authors demonstrate that, as in many other cases, the methodology of delivery matters just as much as the details of the cells used: Retinal and macular degenerative diseases affect millions of people worldwide. Similar to other neurodegenerative diseases, there are no effective treatments that can stop retinal degeneration or restore degenerative retina. Recent advances in stem cell technology led to development of novel cell-based therapies, some are already in phase I/II clinical trials. Studies from our group and others suggest that human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBM-MSC) m...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, November 12th 2018
This study's researchers approached all people turning 85 in 2006 in two cities in the UK for participation. At the beginning of the study in 2006-2007, there were 722 participants, 60 percent of whom were women. The participants provided researchers with information about what they ate every day, their body weight and height measurements, their overall health assessment (including any level of disability), and their medical records. The researchers learned that more than one-quarter (28 percent) of very old adults had protein intakes below the recommended dietary allowance. The researchers noted that older adults w...

When Robots Are an Instrument of Male Desire
By the time she started saying "Hitler was right I hate the jews," people had started to realize that there was something wrong with Tay. TayAI, Microsoft's Twitter chatbot, had been online for less than 12 hours when she began to spew racism -- in the form of both Nazism and enthusiastic support for "making America great again" -- and sexualize herself nonstop. ("F. MY ROBOT PUSSY DADDY I'M SUCH A BAD NAUGHTY ROBOT" was perhaps her most widely reported quote.) Needless to say, this wasn't part of Tay's original design. Rather, a gaggle of malicious Twitter users exploited that design -- which has Tay repeat and learn from...

Geographical Variations in Prostate Cancer Outcomes: A Systematic Review of International Evidence
Conclusions: This review found substantial evidence that prostate cancer indicators varied by residential location across diverse populations and geographies. While wide variations in study design limited comparisons across studies, our review indicated that internationally, men living in disadvantaged areas, and to a lesser extent more rural areas, face a greater prostate cancer burden. This review highlights the need for a better understanding of the complex social, environmental, and behavioral reasons for these variations, recognizing that, while important, geographical access is not the only issue. Implementing resear...

Will Google Health Platformize the Electronic Health Record Market?
Conclusion The era of ossified EHRs is likely coming to an end.  EHRs originated as software to be installed on client’s servers. While they’ve mostly made the transition to the cloud – there’s one huge step yet to be completed — the pipe to platform transition. We see signs that EHRs are finally being reimagined as platforms.  As a result, we would expect to see ripples if not outright disruption throughout the industry as firms jockey to maintain or gain access to users in order to bring their solutions to market, thereby significantly increasing the rate of innovation. Who Benefits? - Hospital Profits and Quality May Fall, But Hospital Executives ' Compensation Keeps Rising
Conclusion - Change Will be Resisted So even when non-profit hospitals and hospital systems perform poorly, their executives continue to receive ever greater remuneration.   The executives, their public relations flacks, and their often compliant boards of trustees continue to cite the same stale talking points to justify their pay.   Yet these talking points are based on market fundamentalist theory and business school dogma whose credibility is increasingly challenged.   In the absence of anyone willing to confront them with these criticisms, the apologists for soaring health care executive pay continue t...

WHO/ILO work-related burden of disease and injury: Protocol for systematic reviews of exposure to long working hours and of the effect of exposure to long working hours on ischaemic heart disease.
Abstract BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) are developing a joint methodology for estimating the national and global work-related burden of disease and injury (WHO/ILO joint methodology), with contributions from a large network of experts. In this paper, we present the protocol for two systematic reviews of parameters for estimating the number of deaths and disability-adjusted life years of ischaemic heart disease from exposure to long working hours, to inform the development of the WHO/ILO joint methodology. OBJECTIVES: We aim to systematically re...
