Nanomedicine for drug delivery in South Africa: a protocol for systematic review
DiscussionThe systematic review will inform the government, policy-makers, investors, health professionals, scientists, and engineers about the applications of nanomedicine in drug delivery. In particular, it will identify the diseases targeted by the application of nanomedicine for drug delivery and the progress being made in South Africa as the disease burden of this country differs from that of developed countries where nanomedicine has been widely used for drug delivery.Systematic review registrationPROSPEROCRD42017057388

More Than Just Dander
First, a sort of meta-comment in the form of a shout-out to HCRenewal ' s intrepid editor, Dr. Roy Poses, for his just-published analysis of what we might call " blogging: rise and fall. " He sees decline reflected in publications long  devoted to health and health policy, yet now flaking off.Methinks, however, despite the usefulness of his overview of recent decades, Dr. P need not fret excessively. Water spilling out of the barrel ' s lip will slow down once folks come along and punch a whole bunch of little mid-section tweet-holes in it. Information still flows. (Sort of.)  In any case, surely there ' s overla...

Time To Change Course!
By MERLE BUSHKIN With all due respect to the good intentions of Congress, HHS, CMS, ONC and their dedicated advisors, they are pursuing — and for years have pursued — the wrong approach to achieve medical record interoperability. Endless studies, reports and anecdotal evidence conclude that trying to standardize the way medical records are formatted and kept, and linking provider silos via health information exchanges, doesn’t work! It is far too rigid, complex and constraining, and far too costly. Most importantly, it doesn’t meet care providers’ needs for “total interoperability” — instant ...

FBI “Assessments”: Cato FOIA Lawsuit Edition
Patrick G. EddingtonWhen is an FBI investigation not, according to the FBI, an investigation? When the non ‐investigation investigation is categorized, per the FBI Domestic Investigations and Operations Guide (DIOG), as an “Assessment”–a bureaucratic exercise in legerdemain made possible by the 2008rewrite of the Attorney General ’s Guidelines on Domestic FBI Operations. Here’s the relevant paragraph on “Assessments” from the AG Guidelines (p. 17):You read that correctly: the FBI can open an “Assessment” on any individual or organization without a criminal predicate. And as a  Brennan Centerfact she...

Coupons, PBM ' s ... oh my!
Over the past few years, my coverage of coupon-generating websites/apps has increased by a lot in this blog because those have emerged as a critical way for patients to get prescriptions at lower, PBM-negotiated prices even if they have yet to satisfy an annual insurance deductible or they have no insurance at all. In general, coupon-generating websites/apps offer consumers access to the deeper pharmacy benefits manager ( " PBM " )-negotiated prices on prescription drugs, at prices which are often substantially less than the prices you could otherwise attain as a consumer without the benefit of a commercial healthcare...

After Backlash, Apple Postpones Photo Scanning Plans
Julian SanchezLast month, Iwrote about Apple ' s well-intentioned but profoundly unwise plan to begin scanning photos on user devices for Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). The announcement provoked a degree of outcry from privacy advocates and security researchers that seems to have caught the company by surprise —prompting Apple to press pause on the rollout in order to " collect input and make improvements before releasing these critically important child safety features. "While this is good news, the wording suggests they remain committed to moving ahead with the features they ' d announced —including the photo sc...

Optimal recycle price game theory model for second-hand mobile phone recycling
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2021 Nov 29. doi: 10.1007/s11356-021-17061-w. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHuman societies develop rapidly through the advancement of technology; however, with these advancements, many problems are emerging. The topic chosen for this study surrounds the e-waste, which has become a major problem around the world. Second-hand and unused mobile phones are a big part of globally generated e-waste. If these devices are properly recycled, they can generate substantial economic and resource value. Yet if they are indiscriminately discarded, they cause a profound environmental impact. Given the current...

Molecular Clustering Analysis of Blood Biomarkers in World Trade Center Exposed Community Members with Persistent Lower Respiratory Symptoms
This report expands upon our study of this group with the goal to identify molecular markers associated with exposure and heterogeneity in WTC survivors with LRS using a selected plasma biomarker approach. Samples from WTC survivors with LRS (n = 73, WTCS) and samples from healthy control participants of the NYU Bellevue Asthma Registry (NYUBAR, n = 55) were compared. WTCS provided information regarding WTC dust exposure intensity. Hierarchical clustering of the linear biomarker data identified two clusters within WTCS and two clusters within NYUBAR controls. Comparison of the WTCS clusters showed that one cluster had sign...

Cluster headache - The worst possible pain on YouTube
Headache. 2022 Sep 3. doi: 10.1111/head.14368. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn clinical practice, patients with cluster headache often ask questions or mention information that they have seen or heard on the Internet. Because YouTube (www.youtube.com) is the second most visited Web site worldwide and offers a plethora of video content, we found it timely to ascertain the quality of information on cluster headache that is freely available on YouTube. We conducted an inquiry on YouTube on January 24, 2022, with the search term "cluster headache." Eligible YouTube videos included those with ≥10,000 views and content relate...
