How to Preserve Cultural Memory in the Digital Age
Humans are a fortunate species. We are not the strongest or fastest. We don't have the biggest brains or live the longest. Yet we are dominant over the planet. From cuneiform to computer chip, our memory technologies give us a unique survival advantage: knowledge. But that knowledge is not secure in the digital age. We're moving from an information economy of relative scarcity to one of abundance. And we have yet to build an infrastructure that can manage titanic masses of data at scale. The high cost of publishing books and making films forced us to ask what we can afford to save. But anyone with an internet connection ...

The World's Largest Radio Telescope Is Ready To Hunt For Alien Life
The Chinese government has finished building the world's largest radio telescope -- a $180 million monster that will be used in the search for extraterrestrial life. The last of the 4,450 panels that make up the telescope’s reflector, which is some 30 football fields in size, was hoisted into position Sunday morning, according to a press release from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope, or FAST, is located in the country's southwestern province of Guizhou. Its completion comes just months after authorities announced plans to relocate 9,110 people from their h...

Alien-Hunting 19 Years After "Contact"
This article was originally posted on Inverse. By Sarah Sloat One of the most realistic parts of Contact is the blatant sexism that the brilliant young astronomer Eleanor Arroway encounters throughout the 1997 extraterrestrial-hunting film. The rumored inspiration for Arroway -- Jill Tarter -- said in 1999 that author Carl Sagan, who wrote the novel the movie was based off of, "included many of the 'character-building' experiences that are common to women scientists studying and working in a male-dominated profession, so Ellie seems very familiar to me." "Character-building" in this scenario is being a prominent SETI ...

Economics Will Be Our Ruination II
Economics appears to be a neutral tool, but it often subtly embeds values that we are better off surfacing and discussing. In a recent post henceforth to be known as “ Economics Will Be Our Runiation I , ” I pointed out how, by preferring to measure the movement of dollars, orthodox economics treats leisure as a bad thing and laments advances in technology-based entertainments. This installment of EWBOR focuses on an interesting and insightful article recently published in the University of Pennsylvania Law Review, “ An Economic Understanding of Search and Seizure Law . ” In it, George Washington University Law Sc...

The Limits of Google: How Patients Can Find Out What Works In Medical Care
This report increased the likelihood that patients who might benefit from the drug will have it covered by their insurance. ICER calculates a fair benchmark price to the manufacturer, the payer, the patient and the overall health system, so that these decisions can be made collaboratively in full view of you, the patient. These decisions have always been made behind closed doors, so the fact that cost is being addressed and discussed openly provides patients with a significant advantage. Still, when it comes to considering costs, some patient advocacy groups get nervous when the subject comes up. I would not be fair if I...

Politicians get a very bitter taste of the very same medicine they ' ve forced onto clinicians and the public
This is a case of education - I hope - by fire on electronic information security, and why " going electronic " can be a risky business.  This is a lesson deeply needed by our government leadership who have been pushing an unfettered national rollout of electronic medical records systems, despite known and exploited security concerns of EHRs, among other concerns discussed at this blog.I ' ve written dozens of posts, just based on casual searches of news, illustrating breaches of healthcare information technology security and privacy of information, as have others focusing primarily on these issues such as Patient Pri...

Prescriber Education Campaign on Opioids Launched
We have been hearing for years about the opioid crisis our country is facing, a crisis that was partially brought about by abuse of prescription pain relievers. From Congressional investigations, to Executive branch actions, to a letter from the Surgeon General, many of our country’s leaders are concerned about the epidemic and are constantly trying to craft solutions. The Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, an organization committed to helping families struggling with their son or daughter’s substance abuse, created the “Search and Rescue” campaign, a prescriber education campaign developed with support from the Food...

22 Rescued, Malaysia Searches for Six Others from Boat Sinking
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysian authorities expanded the search Monday for six people, including five Chinese tourists, still missing two days after their boat sank off Borneo island. Twenty-two people were rescued, but three Chinese tourists died. Malaysia's Maritime Enforcement Agency said in a statement that the search area has been expanded by about four times to 1,500 square nautical miles of the South China Sea, off Sabah state. It said Brunei has also deployed a plane to search in its waters. Government minister Shahidan Kassim was reported by the national Bernama news agency as saying that the 20 Chinese...

Methuselah Foundation Reports on the Achievements of 2016
Methuselah Foundation, co-founded by David Gobel and Aubrey de Grey, was the first organization to begin earnest funding of SENS rejuvenation research, and those efforts ultimately led to the creation of the SENS Research Foundation some years ago, and the considerable progress towards rejuvenation therapies accomplished since then. Methuselah Foundation has long undertaken a range of other work as well, and that continues today. The organization has acted as an incubator of sorts over the years, using the philanthropic donations of members of the Methuselah 300 to help seed fund a number of companies involved in regenerat...

Medicaid Work Requirements: Who ’s At Risk?
While the American Health Care Act (AHCA) has collapsed, adding work requirements to Medicaid continues as a key theme in conservative health reform efforts. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Seema Verma sent a letter to state governors offering greater flexibility in approving Medicaid Section 1115 waivers, including those with work-related proposals. Four states, Indiana, Arizona, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, have submitted waivers to CMS to add work requirements to Medicaid. In his rejection of a Medicaid expansion bill that was ...
