Radiation Safety: A Call to Arms
The last two decades have witnessed a technological revolution in surgery. Diagnostic and therapeutic medical imaging are now central tools in surgical practice and some might say that the ionizing beam has become the modern vascular surgeon's scalpel. According to a 2010 US Food and Drug Administration White Paper, per capita exposure to ionizing radiation (from all sources) increased from 3.6 mSv in 1980 to 6.25 mSv in 2006.1 During this time, the contribution that was attributable to medical imaging increased from 15% in 1980 to 48% in 2006,2 and over two-thirds of all medical imaging in 2010 involved ionizing radiation.

Central Venous Catheter Tip Migration by Power Contrast Media Injection
CT- injectable Central Venous Catheters (CVCs) are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for power injection of CT contrast material. Since approved, the use of power CVCs have become an increasingly popular choice for vascular access. However, during the CT procedure there is a dramatic change in pressure causing the catheter to undergo a “whipping phenomenon”. This can cause the catheter tip to migrate.

Salinomycin exerts anti-angiogenic and anti-tumorigenic activities by inhibiting vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2-mediated angiogenesis.
In this study, we describe a novel and safely VEGFR2 inhibitor, Salinomycin (Sal), which was screened from the drug libraries of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and prohibited the binding of the ATP at its binding pocket of VEGFR2 using molecular docking model. Sal could interfere a series of VEGF-induced angiogenesis processes including proliferation, migration, and tube formation in HUVECS in vitro.
