Effect of atherosclerosis on 5-year risk of major vascular events in patients with transient ischaemic attack or minor ischaemic stroke: an international prospective cohort study
Lancet Neurol. 2023 Apr;22(4):320-329. doi: 10.1016/S1474-4422(23)00067-4.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: The prevalence of atherosclerosis and the long-term risk of major vascular events in people who have had a transient ischaemic attack or minor ischaemic stroke, regardless of the causal relationship between the index event and atherosclerosis, are not well known. In this analysis, we applied the ASCOD (atherosclerosis, small vessel disease, cardiac pathology, other causes, and dissection) grading system to estimate the 5-year risk of major vascular events according to whether there was a causal relationship between atherosclerosis...

Altered vascular smooth muscle cell differentiation in the endometrial vasculature in menorrhagia
This study included both straight and spiral arterioles and analysed only stratum functionalis. The VSMC differentiation with respect to αSMA expression is an observational study and the data are presented as presence or absence of the differentiation markers in each field of view, corresponding with the vascular cross sections included in the study of vascular muscle content. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS Smoothelin and calponin have been widely implicated as important regulators of vascular tone, vascular contractility and rate of blood flow. Our results have uncovered a disparate pattern of calponin expressi...

Association between vascular health and ovarian ageing in type 1 diabetes mellitus
STUDY QUESTION Is vascular health associated with ovarian reserve status using type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM-1) as a model for vascular compromise? SUMMARY ANSWER No conclusive evidence for an association between vascular health and ovarian ageing was found in women with DM-1. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY The mechanism behind advanced ovarian ageing has not yet been elucidated. We hypothesize that vascular impairment precedes ovarian ageing. DM-1 is hallmarked by premature vascular complications that may consequently play a role in the rate of primordial follicle decline. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION A cross-sectional, patient-...

Innovation search dynamics in new domains: An exploratory study of academic founders' search for funding in the biotechnology industry
Publication date: Available online 15 January 2017 Source:Technological Forecasting and Social Change Author(s): Susan K. Cohen, Natasha V. Munshi Previous studies have emphasized the role of experience in shaping the mental models and theories that guide search, but offered minimal insight into how individuals navigate domains for which their experience provides no problem-relevant schemata. To explore how search unfolds in such new domains (ND), we study first time academic founders' quest for early-stage funding, a critical step in the innovation process. We observe that these founders differentially recombine institut...

Everolimus-eluting bioresorbable vascular scaffolds versus everolimus-eluting metallic stents: a meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials
This study is registered with PROSPERO, number CRD42015026374. Findings We included six trials, comprising data for 3738 patients randomised to receive percutaneous coronary intervention with either an everolimus-eluting bioresorbable vascular scaffold (n=2337) or an everolimus-eluting metallic stent (n=1401). Median follow-up was 12 months (IQR 9–12). Patients treated with bioresorbable vascular scaffolds had a similar risk of target lesion revascularisation (OR 0·97 [95% CI 0·66–1·43]; p=0·87), target lesion failure (1·20 [0·90–1·60]; p=0·21), myocardial infarction (1·36 [0·98–1·89]; p=0·06), and dea...

Inhibiting trophoblast PAR-1 overexpression suppresses sFlt-1-induced anti-angiogenesis and abnormal vascular remodeling: a possible therapeutic approach for preeclampsia
AbstractSTUDY QUESTIONIs it possible to improve vascular remodeling by inhibiting the excessive expression of protease-activated receptor 1 (PAR-1) in trophoblast of abnormal placenta?SUMMARY ANSWERInhibition of trophoblast PAR-1 overexpression may promote placental angiogenesis and vascular remodeling, offering an alternative therapeutic approach for preeclampsia.WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADYPAR-1 is high-affinity receptor of thrombin. Thrombin increases sFlt-1 secretion in trophoblast via the activation of PAR-1. It is reported that the expression of both thrombin and PAR-1 expression are increased in placentas of preeclampsia p...
