Effects of Hypovitaminosis D on Preoperative Pain Threshold and Perioperative Opioid Use in Colorectal Cancer Surgery: A Cohort Study
CONCLUSIONS: On the basis of the study results, hypovitaminosis D is associated with increased perioperative opioid consumption in colorectal cancer surgery. Sensory perception and pain threshold of patients with insufficient 25 (OH) D3 concentration were more sensitive, and PET was lower. History of DM, vitamin D, and vitamin C may be factors related with SSI. Future studies are needed to investigate their relationship further and discover if postoperative pain and pain threshold can benefit from vitamin D supplementation in these patients.PMID:36288586

Vitamin D insufficiency increases risk of chronic pain among African Americans experiencing motor vehicle collision
African Americans experience an increased burden of motor vehicle collision (MVC), post-MVC musculoskeletal pain, and vitamin D insufficiency. In this prospective multicenter study, we tested the hypothesis that African Americans (n = 133) presenting to the emergency department after MVC with low peritraumatic vitamin D levels would have worse chronic musculoskeletal pain outcomes compared to individuals with sufficient vitamin D. Vitamin D levels were assessed in the early aftermath of MVC through enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and pain severity was assessed using the 0 to 10 numeric rating scale at 6 weeks, 6 months,...

Pain Management in Painful Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthropathy: Challenging and Intricately Intertwined Issues Involving Several Systems
AbstractPurpose of ReviewPsoriasis and psoriatic arthropathy are inflammatory autoimmune conditions that can lead to profound emotional distress, social stigmatization, isolation, disfigurement, pain, disability, unemployment, and decreased quality of life. Thus, this disease has immense psychological, social, and economic implications as the pain experienced is closely associated with the primary disease burden. This review focuses on discussing the primary disease burden of psoriasis and psoriatic arthropathy, as well as management of different types of pain in these patients.Recent FindingsPain affects over 40% of patie...

Vitamin D Deficiency and Molecular Changes in Circulating MicroRNAs in Older Adults with Lower Back Pain
CONCLUSIONS: In older adults with vitamin D deficiency, the severity of LBP was significantly associated with the expression of circulating miRNAs, adiposity, bone metabolism, inflammation, and muscle performance. In addition, the expressed miRNAs, along with other LBP cofounders, were significantly associated with ∼63.9-86.4% of the incidence of LBP in older adults. These results suggest the possibility of using microRNAs as therapeutics to alleviate established pain and as biomarkers in old adults with painful conditions.PMID:34055120 | PMC:PMC8149253 | DOI:10.1155/2021/6662651

Relationship between Vitamin D and Nonspecific Low Back Pain May Be Mediated by Inflammatory Markers
CONCLUSION: Patients with Ns-LBP had lower vitamin D and higher inflammatory marker levels. This association between hypovitaminosis D and Ns-CLBP may be mediated by IL-6. Therefore, large-scale clinical trials are warranted to investigate the clinical efficacy of vitamin D supplementation for decreasing inflammation and relieving Ns-LBP.PMID:34704712

Vitamin D and N-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid levels predict chronic pain following major thermal burn injury
Major Thermal Burn Injury (MThBI) is a significant public health problem in which 50,000 individuals are hospitalized annually in the US. Chronic pain is common following MThBI affecting up to 60% of survivors. There are currently few treatment options to reduce chronic pain and improve mental and physical function following MThBI. Accumulating evidence suggests Vitamin D and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs, commonly found in fish oil) reduce symptom burden in other pain conditions. Therefore, we hypothesize low levels of n-3 PUFAs and Vitamin D predict greater chronic pain severity after MThBI.

Novel Pharmacological Nonopioid Therapies in Chronic Pain
AbstractPurpose of ReviewOpioid use and abuse has led to a worldwide opioid epidemic. And while opioids are clinically useful when appropriately indicated, they are associated with a wide range of dangerous side effects and whether they are effective at treating or eliminating chronic pain is controversial. There has long been a need for the development of nonopioid alternative treatments for patients that live in pain, and until recently, only a few effective treatments were available. Today, there are a wide range of nonopioid treatments available including NSAIDs, acetaminophen, corticosteroids, nerve blocks, SSRIs, neu...
