Incidence and Outcomes of Vascular Injury in the Setting of Tibial Plateau Fractures: A Single-Center Review
Concern for vascular injury in the setting of tibial plateau fractures is a common consultation to the vascular surgery service. There is no algorithm to predict the likelihood of vascular injury based on fracture type or injury characteristics. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of vascular injury in patients with various types of tibial plateau fractures and clinical characteristics on presentation to guide management.

Black patients present with more severe vascular disease and a greater burden of risk factors than white patients at time of major vascular intervention
Although many studies have demonstrated racial disparities after major vascular surgery, few have identified the reasons for these disparities, and those that did often lacked clinical granularity. Therefore, our aim was to evaluate differences in initial vascular intervention between black and white patients.

Journal of Vascular Surgery – January 2018 Audiovisual Summary
Hi, I am Peter Gloviczki from Mayo Clinic, Editor in Chief of the Journal of Vascular Surgery. I am very pleased to share with you the highlights of the best papers we have in the 2018 January issue of the Journal of Vascular Surgery. The Editors' Choice article is the Society for Vascular Surgery practice guidelines on the care of patients with an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). This 76-page-long comprehensive document includes 776 references, and it represents an update and, in many areas, a complete revision of the previous update published in 2009.

Pediatric Vascular Surgical Practice Patterns
Vascular surgeons infrequently care for pediatric patients. As such, variability in operative management and available hospital resources at free-standing children ’s hospitals (CH) may exist. The study aims were: 1) determine vascular surgeon comfort level with pediatric vascular surgery, and 2) determine variations in pediatric vascular surgery practice patterns.

Analysis of Intraoperative Radiation Use in Vascular Surgery: Catalyst for Quality Improvement
There is paucity of literature reporting radiation usage in vascular surgery. In the era of endovascular surgeries, intraoperative C-arm fluoroscopy is often used by vascular surgeons in both percutaneous and hybrid surgeries. Analyzing the use of radiation in vascular procedures can help identify patterns and establish quality improvement initiatives.

Routine Use of Ultrasound Guidance in Femoral Arterial Access for Peripheral Vascular Intervention Decreases Groin Hematoma Rates in High-Volume Surgeons
There is a documented learning curve when adopting ultrasound guidance (UG) to aid vascular access. In the Vascular Study Group of New England (VSGNE), routine UG during percutaneous femoral artery access was shown to protect against the complication of groin hematoma. We sought to confirm this finding in the Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI), a dataset with a larger sample size and broader geographic distribution, and evaluate the effects of ultrasound usage and interventionalist volume on hematoma rates following peripheral vascular interventions (PVI).

Nuclear factor-kappa B activation inhibits proliferation and promotes apoptosis of vascular smooth muscle cells.
Conclusions NF-κB overexpression promotes apoptosis and inhibits cell proliferation of VSMCs. The mechanisms might be regulated by promoting FasL and HRG-1 expression. PMID: 30003828 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Targeting Phosphodiesterase-5 by Vardenafil Improves Vascular Graft Function
Ischaemia reperfusion (IR) injury occurs during vascular graft harvesting and implantation during vascular/cardiac surgery. Elevated intracellular cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) levels contribute to an effective endothelial protection in different pathophysiological conditions. The hypothesis that the phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor vardenafil would protect vascular grafts against IR injury by upregulating the nitric oxide –cGMP pathway in the vessel wall of the bypass graft was investigated.

Association of Vascular Surgery Board of the American Board of Surgery Examination Performance With Clinical Outcomes: Experience Matters
The Vascular Surgery Board of the American Board of Surgery (VSB-ABS) Vascular Surgery Qualifying and Certifying examinations are meant to assess qualifications, but it is unclear whether examination performance correlates with clinical outcomes. We assessed this relationship using data from the Society for Vascular Surgery Vascular Quality Initiative (SVS-VQI).

Results of Carotid Endarterectomy in Patients With Contralateral Internal Carotid Artery Occlusion From the Society for Vascular Surgery Vascular Quality Initiative
Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is among the most commonly performed vascular procedures. Some have suggested worse outcomes with contralateral internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusion (cICAoccl). We compared patients with vs without cICAoccl using the Society for Vascular Surgery Vascular Quality Initiative database.

Outcomes of minor amputations in patients with peripheral vascular disease over a 10-year period at a tertiary care institution.
Conclusion This study shows that a majority of foot amputees require ongoing care for non-healing wounds and a proportion necessitate conversion to major amputation. Adequate vascularization is essential to promote and maintain healing. PMID: 30157719 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
