Comparison of puncture methods in patients with hemodialysis: A randomized controlled trial
CONCLUSION: Hemodialysis patients who received the rope ladder puncture technique had a lower percutaneous angioplasty rate and better quality of life than patients who received the area puncture technique, suggesting that the rope ladder technique could be implemented as a routine cannulation method in hemodialysis clinics.PMID:36726291 | DOI:10.1111/sdi.13142

Hypophosphataemia risk associated with ferric carboxymaltose in heart failure: A pooled analysis of clinical trials
ConclusionsThe risk of laboratory-assessed hypophosphataemia in HF patients treated with FCM was lower than that seen in patients in other therapeutic areas treated with FCM, and clinical events associated with hypophosphataemia are uncommon with FCM therapy in this population. Appropriate monitoring, particularly soon after administration, will allow for further refinement of management strategies.

Group II metabotropic glutamate receptor activation suppresses ATP currents in rat dorsal root ganglion neurons
Neuropharmacology. 2023 Jan 26:109443. doi: 10.1016/j.neuropharm.2023.109443. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTP2X3 receptors and group II metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) have been found to be expressed in primary sensory neurons. P2X3 receptors participate in a variety of pain processes, while the activation of mGluRs has an analgesic effect. However, it's still unclear whether there is a link between them in pain. Herein, we reported that the group II mGluR activation inhibited the electrophysiological activity of P2X3 receptors in rat dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons. Group II mGluR agonist LY354740 concentratio...

Severe Neurological Involvement in an Adult with Shiga Toxin-Producing < i > Escherichia coli < /i > -Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome Treated with Eculizumab
A 68-year-old man with a medical history of hypertension was admitted to the emergency department for diffuse abdominal pain preceded by bloody diarrhea. Upon admission, neurological examination was normal, but he suddenly developed a left-sided hemiparesis. After a normal brain computed tomography, intravenous thrombolysis was administered for a suspicion of ischemic stroke. In the first laboratory investigations, hemoglobin was 16.9 g/dL, platelets 121 × 109/L (150 –450), and serum creatinine 1.17 mg/dL. By the second hospital day, the platelet level dropped to 79 × 109/L, with haptoglobin at 0.12 g/L, 3% schistocyte...

Farewell, Landleigh Nelson. I (and others) in the Diabetes Community Will Miss You.
Over the weekend, I learned that Landileigh Lee (James) Nelson died on Tuesday, January 10, 2023. As many of her friends knew, in recent years, Landileigh (or as those closest to her called her " Landi " ) had been dealing with a number of health issues. She faced seemingly one health issue after another, including dialysis which began at one point. And yet she handled it all incredibly gracefully and with her typical sense of humor, which was one reason I was proud to call Landileigh my friend. In 2017, Landi posted that she had gotten a new haircut on Facebook. I thought it was a nice photo of her, and this is how I wish ...

Where are EHRs headed in 2023?
Electronic Health Records (EHRs) are the central technology pillar for healthcare organizations. EHRs are vital to both clinical and administrative operations. Because of that, we wanted to dedicate an entire article to where EHRs are headed in 2023. We connected with MEDITECH, EPIC, eClinicalWorks, ModMed, NextGen Healthcare, athenahealth, and Elation Health. We asked them all the same 2 questions: What can customers expect from you in 2023? What is your prediction for the EHR market in 2023? Here are their responses. MEDITECH – Leah Farina, Vice President of Client Services and Carol Labadini, Vice President of ...

Tuberculous peritonitis in patients on peritoneal dialysis: a 35-year experience from a large medical center in Northern Taiwan
CONCLUSION: Physicians should pay attention to the unusual presentations of peritonitis, especially if symptoms include fever or an initial low PDE WBC count. Catheter removal is not mandatory if early diagnosis and appropriate therapy are available.PMID:36632795 | DOI:10.1080/0886022X.2022.2153064
