Project prevent: utility of pre-operative metronidazole gel in reduction of patient symptoms and infections after elective hysterectomy
Despite strong evidence and guidelines recommending use of intravenous antibiotics and pre-operative chlorhexidine wipes during elective hysterectomy, surgical site infections (SSI) continue to contribute to patient complaints of vaginal discharge, dysuria, pelvic pain, and wound infection. We hypothesize that additional antibiotic prophylaxis may be able to prevent not only SSI but patient reported symptoms of SSI. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate if vaginal metronidazole use for five days prior to elective hysterectomy decreased post-operative symptoms and infection rate.
