The vital role of physiotherapy during COVID-19: A systematic review
CONCLUSION: The current study findings support that physiotherapy interventions facilitate recovery in COVID-19 patients and act as a protective barrier. Further results include a reduced length of stay in intensive care and reduced treatment cost since this outbreak has brought a significant economic burden to many countries.PMID:34719461 | DOI:10.3233/WOR-210450

Environmental enrichment for stroke and other non-progressive brain injury
CONCLUSIONS: The gap in current research should not, however, be interpreted as proof that environmental enrichment is ineffective. Further research is needed with robust study designs, such as cluster RCTs, and consistent outcome measurement evaluating the effectiveness of environmental enrichment in different settings (inpatient versus outpatient), the relative effectiveness of various components of environmental enrichment, cost-effectiveness, and safety of the intervention in people following stroke or other non-progressive brain injuries. It should be noted, however, that it is challenging to randomise or double-blind...

REM phase: An ingenious mechanism to enhance clearance of metabolic waste from the retina
Exp Eye Res. 2021 Nov 26:108860. doi: 10.1016/j.exer.2021.108860. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Rapid Eye Movement (REM) phase of sleep, also known as "active sleep" because of physiological similarities to waking state, is characterized by intense cerebral electrical activity, propensity to dream vividly and suppression of skeletal muscle activity (atonia) except for the extraocular muscles that give rise to the so-called REM. In 1998 David Maurice, an ophthalmologist, proposed that REM sleep was associated with an eye function: it would be required to stir the anterior chamber and bath it with aqueous humor to preven...

An integrative review of the qualities of a 'good' physiotherapist
CONCLUSIONS: The qualities of a 'good' physiotherapist identified in the review emphasize the human interaction between physiotherapists and patients and point to the centrality of balancing technical competence with a relational way of being.PMID:34881685 | DOI:10.1080/09593985.2021.1999354

Autogenic drainage for airway clearance in cystic fibrosis
CONCLUSIONS: Autogenic drainage is a challenging technique that requires commitment from the individual. As such, this intervention merits systematic review to ensure its effectiveness for people with cystic fibrosis, particularly in an era where treatment options are changing rapidly. From the studies assessed, autogenic drainage was not found to be superior to any other form of airway clearance technique. Larger studies are required to better evaluate autogenic drainage in comparison to other airway clearance techniques in view of the relatively small number of participants in this review and the complex study designs. Quality of Care Indicators for Hospital Physical Therapy Units: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSIONS: A broad selection of quality indicators was identified from international resources, which can be used to measure the quality of physical therapy care in hospital units.IMPACT: This review identified 178 quality-of-care indicators that can be used in clinical practice monitoring and quality improvement of hospital physical therapy units. The results highlight a lack of accessibility, equity, and efficiency measures for physical therapy units.PMID:34935986 | DOI:10.1093/ptj/pzab261

The Incidence and Management of Osgood-Schlatter Disease in General Practice
CONCLUSION: For the first time the incidence of OSD is calculated using GP electronic medical files. There is a discrepancy, especially for imaging and referral to a medical specialist, between the current general practice guideline and what GPs actually recommended.PMID:34990396 | DOI:10.3399/BJGP.2021.0386
