Clinical and Immunological Outcomes in High-Risk Resected Melanoma Patients Receiving Peptide-Based Vaccination and Interferon Alpha, With or Without Dacarbazine Preconditioning: A Phase II Study
Clinical studies based on novel rationales and mechanisms of action of chemotherapy agents and cytokines can contribute to the development of new concepts and strategies of antitumor combination therapies. In previous studies, we investigated the paradoxical immunostimulating effects of some chemotherapeutics and the immunoadjuvant activity of interferon alpha (IFN-α) in preclinical and clinical models, thus unraveling novel rationales and mechanisms of action of chemotherapy agents and cytokines for cancer immunotherapy. Here, we carried out a randomized, phase II clinical trial, in which we analyzed the relapse-free (RF...

Leading the hunt for a COVID-19 vaccine
Paul Stoffels, J&J ’s Chief Scientific Officer, has given delegates at eyeforpharma’s Barcelona Virtual conference exclusive insights into its rapid progress in the search for a vaccine to the COVID-19 virus. Speaking to Reuters News on day two of the five-day conference, Stoffels said J&J ’s potential vaccine, which has just been chosen as a lead candidate to help tackle the pandemic, could be ready for clinical trials as soon as early September with evidence of its safety and efficacy expected by the end of the year.  This means that the first vaccinations could be given in the first quarter of 2021. ...

An Open-Label Study of the Safety and Efficacy of Tag-7 Gene-Modified Tumor Cells-Based Vaccine in Patients with Locally Advanced or Metastatic Malignant Melanoma or Renal Cell Cancer.
CONCLUSION: GMV showed high results in carefully selected patients with low ISF (TGF-β1, IL-10, and VEGF) production. The method should be further investigated in patients with FP. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. PMID: 32240562 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Anti-epidermal growth factor receptor therapy for glioblastoma in adults.
CONCLUSIONS: In summary, there is no evidence of a demonstrable overall survival benefit with the addition of anti-EGFR therapy in first-line and recurrent glioblastomas. Newer drugs that are specially designed for glioblastoma targets may raise the possibility of success in this population, but data are lacking at present. Future studies should be more selective in pursuing people displaying specific EGFR targets. PMID: 32395825 [PubMed - in process]

'Secondary prevention' against female HPV infection: literature review of the role of carrageenan.
Authors: Calagna G, Maranto M, Paola C, Capra G, Perino A, Chiantera V, Cucinella G Abstract INTRODUCTION: Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are common sexually transmitted pathogens, causally associated with cervical cancer and other anogenital cancers, as well as approximately 20% of head and neck cancers. The HPV vaccine is an exceptional primary prevention tool, but the question of adequate secondary-prevention strategies remains open. The aim of this review is to better clarify the role of carrageenan in HPV prevention-strategies. AREAS COVERED: A comprehensive literature search was performed (PubMed/MEDLINE, ...

Inside the Global Quest to Trace the Origins of COVID-19 —and Predict Where It Will Go Next
It wasn’t greed, or curiosity, that made Li Rusheng grab his shotgun and enter Shitou Cave. It was about survival. During Mao-era collectivization of the early 1970s, food was so scarce in the emerald valleys of southwestern China’s Yunnan province that farmers like Li could expect to eat meat only once a year–if they were lucky. So, craving protein, Li and his friends would sneak into the cave to hunt the creatures they could hear squeaking and fluttering inside: bats. Li would creep into the gloom and fire blindly at the vaulted ceiling, picking up any quarry that fell to the ground, while his companion...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, December 28th 2020
In conclusion, our study demonstrated that the molecular processes of aging are relatively subtle in their progress, and the aging process of every tissue depends on the tissue's specialized function and environment. Hence, individual gene or process alone cannot be described as the key of aging in the whole organism. Mouse Age Matters: How Age Affects the Murine Plasma Metabolome A large part of metabolomics research relies on experiments involving mouse models, which are usually 6 to 20 weeks of age. However, in this age range mice undergo dramatic developmental changes. Even small age differences may l...

Fight Aging! Newsletter, March 1st 2021
This study may have important implications for preventing cell senescence and aging-induced tendinopathy, as well as for the selection of novel therapeutic targets of chronic tendon diseases. Our results showed that the treatment of bleomycin, a DNA damaging agent, induced rat patellar TSC (PTSC) cellular senescence. The senescence was characterized by an increase in the senescence-associated β-galactosidase activity, as well as senescence-associated changes in cell morphology. On the other hand, rapamycin could extend lifespan in multiple species, including yeast, fruit flies, and mice, by decelerating DNA damage ...

Kajal S Mehta, Yogesh S Marfatia, Apexa P Jain, Dhiral J Shah, Disha S BaxiIndian Journal of Sexually Transmitted Diseases and AIDS 2021 42(1):1-6Role of male circumcision (MC) as a tool to prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs)/human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was assessed. An attempt was made to search articles related to association between MC and STIs/HIV. A thorough search was carried out to find out quality articles published in indexed specialty journals. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and World Health Organization (WHO) sites were also referred. Warm and moist environment of area under foreski...
