Prevalence of neck pain and its associated factors in Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis protocol
Discussion This will be the first systematic review and meta-analysis to systematically identify and synthesise available literature on the prevalence of neck pain and its associated factors in Africa. The results of this review may assist health professionals and policymakers to plan and implement evidence-based strategies that will lessen the burden of neck pain. Ethics and dissemination Data from previously published studies will be collected and analysed and hence ethical approval will not be sought for this study. The results of this review will be disseminated through publication in a peer-reviewed academic journal ...

Immediate analgesic effect of acupuncture intervention within 10 min during acute migraine attacks: protocol of a randomised controlled trial
This study aims to assess the immediate analgesic effect of acupuncture for 10 min during acute migraine attacks. Methods and analysis The study will randomly divide 80 participants into either the acupuncture group or the sham acupuncture group with an allocation ratio of 1:1. Each group will receive 10 min of treatment, and the post-treatment evaluation will be performed after 0, 0–2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 min of acupuncture. The primary outcome is the pain Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score assessed before and after treatment at 10 min. Additionally, secondary outcomes include the pain VAS score assessed at 0–2, 4,...

Crying to be heard: women in emotional pain
I am struck by how often crying is overlooked or trivialized by doctors despite its therapeutic value and need for recognition. Crying can play a significant role in healing and overall well-being. Research has shown that crying serves as an emotional release, provides pain relief, reduces stress, improves mood, and enhances communication. Encouraging a culture of acceptance Read more… Crying to be heard: women in emotional pain originally appeared in KevinMD.com.

Psychological factors influencing the experience of menstrual pain - the role of pain catastrophizing
CONCLUSION: The results showed that it is worth examining the personality characteristics among the factors influencing the extent of menstrual pain; the results can be incorporated into diagnostic and therapeutic work. Orv Hetil. 2023; 164(37): 1469-1475.PMID:37717237 | DOI:10.1556/650.2023.32857

The importance of “ I statements ” in health care settings
Three nurses are at the nurses’ station. Two are talking about managing a patient’s pain, and a third, Donna, is reviewing a patient’s lab results and finding it difficult to concentrate. Which is Donna’s best statement? 1) Shhh, stop talking! 2) I’m frustrated with your talking. It’s hard to concentrate, and I’d appreciate it if Read more… The importance of “I statements” in health care settings originally appeared in KevinMD.com.

Prolonged course of eravacycline leading to acute pancreatitis
We describe a 46-year-old male who received eravacycline for treatment of a perirectal abscess. While the patient had slightly elevated lipase levels at baseline post-cardiopulmonary arrest, he developed abdominal pain and a further increase in lipase levels following 10 days of eravacycline, consistent with pancreatitis. Based on the Naranjo adverse drug reaction probability scale, eravacycline was the probable etiology of acute pancreatitis given improvement immediately after discontinuation. Clinicians should be aware of this potential adverse effect of eravacycline and should not initiate eravacycline in those with ris...

Cardiac Tamponade Secondary to Hemorrhagic Pericardial Effusion: A Complication of STEMI
Conclusion: The differential for hemodynamic compromise in a patient with STEMI is broad, but quickly distinguishing pump failure from other life-threatening causes of shock is imperative to dictate time-sensitive management decisions. The presence of a hemorrhagic pericardial effusion in the setting of STEMI is a surrogate marker for a severe infarct and can help the bedside physician determine whether a patient will be better served in the catheterization lab for revascularization or in the operating room for surgical repair.PMID:37711482 | PMC:PMC10498953 | DOI:10.31486/toj.23.0023

Significant CA 19-9 Elevation in IgG4-Related Autoimmune Pancreatitis - A Diagnostic Dilemma
We describe the case of a 65-year-old male with history of IgG4-RD, presenting with jaundice and abdominal pain. He was found to have a pancreatic mass with significantly elevated IgG4 162 (2-96 mg/dL and CA19-9 levels 2830 (0-35 U/ml). Patient underwent ERCP and biopsy, which ruled out pancreatic cancer and cholangiocarcinoma. He was diagnosed with IgG4-RD autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) and sclerosing cholangitis. Treatment with steroids and rituximab resulted in significant improvement in the bilirubin and a dramatic decrease in CA19-9 levels.PMID:37714269 | DOI:10.1016/j.amjms.2023.09.016

Massive Renal Cyst Displacing Intra-Abdominal Structures
Conclusion: Noninvasive treatment options for a massive simple renal cyst are limited. Symptomatic treatment and monitoring the cyst size on a regular basis might be helpful for patients who refuse invasive treatment.PMID:37711476 | PMC:PMC10498955 | DOI:10.31486/toj.23.0036

Gangliocytic Paraganglioma of the Duodenum: A Masquerader
Conclusion: GP is often a histologic surprise as most cases are diagnosed in postoperative histopathology. While GP has a more benign course than a neuroendocrine tumor, radical surgical resection is warranted in cases of diagnostic dilemma, suspicion of malignancy, or lymph node metastasis. Robotic-assisted pancreatoduodenectomy is a feasible option.PMID:37711472 | PMC:PMC10498948 | DOI:10.31486/toj.23.0010
