Pediatric appendicular actinomycosis: a case report and literature review
CONCLUSIONS: Although appendicitis is very common in the general population, appendicitis associated with ACM is very rare, accounting for 0.02% - 0.06%, especially in the pediatric population. Diagnosis can be very challenging because they usually present with non-specific symptoms, and can form masses that mimic malignancies. Although rare, clinicians and pathologists should be aware of this entity. Satisfactory results and complete cure are achieved with adequate antibiotic therapy and surgery. In most cases, if there are no associated diseases, early and accurate diagnosis ensure an excellent prognosis.PMID:37661685 | ...

Extensive spinal epidural abscess due to Streptococcus intermedius: a case report treated conservatively and literature review
ConclusionRepeat examinations or gadolinium-enhanced MRI should be considered when initial MRI findings are not diagnostic of SEA. For extensive SEA caused by Streptococcus intermedius infection, surgery may be non-essential, and the judicious antibiotic selection and adequate treatment duration are pivotal for successful conservative management. Furthermore, for patients who are not amenable to surgery, a comprehensive evaluation of their condition and meticulous implementation of a precise pharmacological regimen holds noteworthy clinical significance.

Nephrectomy for xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis —a not-so-simple solution
ConclusionsXGP is a difficult and complex condition to treat. All patients in this series presented with infection or associated sequelae thereof. Complex XGP cases therefore often require open nephrectomy and have high rates of postoperative complications. Careful consideration of antibiotic and operative intervention is therefore essential to ensure the best outcome for these patients.

Acute focal bacterial nephritis and prolonged fever
Paediatr Int Child Health. 2023 Aug 13:1-4. doi: 10.1080/20469047.2023.2235932. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAcute focal bacterial nephritis (AFBN) is characterised by a complicated upper urinary tract infection ranging from acute pyelonephritis to renal abscess. Timely diagnosis of AFBN is important because antibiotic therapy of longer duration is required. A 10-year-old boy presented with fever for 5 days and bilateral flank pain. He was oriented and cooperative but appeared ill. Physical examination did not reveal any oedema or costovertebral angle tenderness. Acute phase reactants such as erythrocyte sedimentation rat...

Black disc morphology during routine lumbar discectomy with subsequent diagnosis of enterococcal discitis
CONCLUSION: Here is an example of enterococcal lumbar discitis found during a routine lumbar discectomy. As operative cultures revealed E. faecalis, the patient required not one but two operations (i.e., second for seroma/ hematoma due to infection) following which antibiotic therapy eradicated the infection.PMID:37560579 | PMC:PMC10408641 | DOI:10.25259/SNI_443_2023
