A survey of 0 + 5 vascular surgery residency candidates: Perceptions of an applicant pool.
CONCLUSION: Applicants remained positive about their planned training and career paths. Attending vascular surgeons were identified as the strongest mentors, yet most students decided only in their third and fourth years to pursue 0 + 5 residencies. Educational debt remains a concern, and there may be consideration for a concerted effort to recruit potential candidates sooner. PMID: 26864776 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Bio-absorbable antibiotic impregnated beads for the treatment of prosthetic vascular graft infections.
CONCLUSION: This report details the successful use of bio-absorbable antibiotic beads for the treatment prosthetic vascular graft infections in patients at high risk for graft explant or major vascular reconstruction. At early follow-up, we demonstrate successful infection suppression, graft preservation, and limb salvage with the use of these beads in a subset of vascular patients. Fifty-year anniversary of the Vietnam Vascular Registry and a historic look at vascular registries
The management of arterial injuries has evolved from simple cauterization of the time of Ambrose Par é to the more complex repairs of today. Through history there has been much learned from combat regarding the management of vascular injuries. Starting in World War I, vascular registries have been established to further study and refine the management of these injuries. One of the most pivotal reg istries was the Vietnam Vascular Registry established by Dr Norman Rich. The lessons learned from these registries have been carried on to the current conflicts with the establishment of the Global War on Terror Vascular Initiative.

Why Vascular Medicine Belongs With Vascular Surgery: Advantages to the Integration of Vascular Medicine and Vascular Surgery Services
We describe a unique service model that integrates vascular medicine and vascular surgery services and present the advantages of the model on both disciplines.

Direct Admission to a Vascular Referral Center Improves Outcomes for Patients With Acute Vascular Disease
Patients with acute vascular disease frequently need specialized management that may require transfer to a vascular referral center. However, interhospital transfers may delay appropriate care, favoring primary admission to a specialty center. We hypothesized that patients with acute vascular disease requiring transfer to a vascular referral center have worse outcomes than patients directly admitted for specialty acute vascular care.

Recent trends in publications of US vascular surgery program directors.
Conclusion There seems to be a significant decline in the number of publications over the last 15 years. Yet, the subject of the publications has progressed from Open to TEVAR with an increase in endovascular publications. However, basic science publications reduced by half. Guidelines for hospital privileges in vascular surgery and endovascular interventions: Recommendations of the Society for Vascular Surgery
The Hospital Privileges Practice Guideline Writing Group of the Society for Vascular Surgery is making the following five recommendations concerning guidelines for hospital privileges for vascular surgery and endovascular therapy. Advanced endovascular procedures are currently entrenched in the everyday practice of specialized vascular interventionalists, including vascular surgeons, but open vascular surgery remains uniquely essential to the specialty. First, we endorse the Residency Review Committee for Surgery recommendations regarding open and endovascular cases during vascular residency and fellowship training.

The Society for Vascular Surgery practice guidelines on follow-up after vascular surgery arterial procedures
Although follow-up after open surgical and endovascular procedures is generally regarded as an important part of the care provided by vascular surgeons, there are no detailed or comprehensive guidelines that specify the optimal approaches with regard to testing methods, indications for reintervention, and follow-up intervals. To provide guidance to the vascular surgeon, the Clinical Practice Council of the Society for Vascular Surgery appointed an expert panel and a methodologist to review the current clinical evidence and to develop recommendations for follow-up after vascular surgery procedures.

The impact of urgent computed tomography angiography for gunshot wounds in extremities with concomitant vascular injuries on diagnosis and postoperative outcomes.
Conclusion In the light of our study, we favor the immediate operative exploration of gunshot wounds in extremities with concomitant hard signs of vascular injuries without waiting for preoperative CT angiography, thereby minimizing the shock state and ischemic interval. CT angiography may be required for a more stable patient to avoid unnecessary surgical exploration. PMID: 30041567 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Survey of Vascular Surgery Trainees Suggests Standardized Vascular Laboratory Curriculum During Training May Be Valuable
Although the Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation (RPVI) examination is required for vascular surgery board certification, no standardized noninvasive vascular laboratory (NIVL) curriculum for vascular surgery trainees exists. The purpose of this study was to investigate the NIVL experience of trainees to understand what helps them feel well prepared.

Analysis of intraoperative radiation use in vascular surgery: Catalyst for quality improvement in patient and personnel safety.
Conclusions There were notable trends in the analyzed radiation usage variables both across the surgical field location and type of surgical procedure. Specifically, cases that involve the abdomen/pelvis, embolization and atherectomy have the highest radiation use. These types of cases can be targeted for future improved dose reduction techniques or staged procedures. This data can serve as baseline information for future quality improvement initiatives for patient and personnel radiation exposure safety. PMID: 30336745 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
