Diagnostic challenges and pockets of susceptibility identified during a measles outbreak, Luxembourg, 2019
Euro Surveill. 2021 Jun;26(22):2000012. doi: 10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2021.26.22.2000012.ABSTRACTLuxembourg was among the first countries in the World Health Organization (WHO) European Region documenting interruption of endemic measles transmission, but an increased incidence was registered in spring 2019. The outbreak started with an unvaccinated student who had been to a winter sports resort in a neighbouring country, where a measles outbreak was ongoing. Subsequently, 12 secondary and two tertiary cases were confirmed among students from the same school, relatives and healthcare workers, as well as six probably unrelated c...

Correlation between measles immunization coverage and overall morbidity and mortality for COVID-19: an epidemiological study
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2021 Jun 29:1-8. doi: 10.1007/s11356-021-14980-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe conducted the current analysis to determine the potential role of measles vaccination in the context of the spread of COVID-19. Data were extracted from the World Health Organization's (WHO) Global Health Observatory data repository about the measles immunization coverage estimates and correlated to overall morbidity and mortality for COVID-19 among different countries. Data were statistically analyzed to calculate the Spearman rank correlation coefficient (rho). There was a significant positive correlation betwee...

Recent MMR vaccination in health care workers and Covid-19: A test negative case-control study
CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that there may be a protective effect of the MMR vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 in males but not females.PMID:34187707 | PMC:PMC8216866 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2021.06.045

Emerging and Re-emerging Infections in Children: COVID/ MIS-C, Zika, Ebola, Measles, Varicella, Pertussis ... Immunizations
Emerg Med Clin North Am. 2021 Aug;39(3):453-465. doi: 10.1016/j.emc.2021.04.002. Epub 2021 Jun 10.ABSTRACTThe role of the emergency provider lies at the forefront of recognition and treatment of novel and re-emerging infectious diseases in children. Familiarity with disease presentations that might be considered rare, such as vaccine-preventable and non-endemic illnesses, is essential in identifying and controlling outbreaks. As we have seen thus far in the novel coronavirus pandemic, susceptibility, severity, transmission, and disease presentation can all have unique patterns in children. Emergency providers also have the...

Determinants of Childhood Diarrhea in Households with Improved Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) in Ethiopia: Evidence from a Repeated Cross-Sectional Study
CONCLUSION: In this study, child factors (age of the child, vaccinated for measles, and the size of a child at birth), and household-related factors (contextual region) had a significant effect on the risk of childhood diarrheal morbidity in households with improved WASH in Ethiopia.PMID:34220201 | PMC:PMC8221697 | DOI:10.1177/11786302211025180

Antibody dependent enhancement: Unavoidable problems in vaccine development
This article focuses on the virus-induced ADE phenomenon and its molecular mechanism. It also summarizes various attempts in vaccine research and development to eliminate the ADE phenomenon, and proposes to avoid ADE in vaccine development from the perspective of antigens and adjuvants.PMID:34656289 | PMC:PMC8438590 | DOI:10.1016/bs.ai.2021.08.003
