Corticosteroids for managing acute pain subsequent to surgical extraction of mandibular third molars: A systematic review and meta-analysis
J Am Dent Assoc. 2023 Aug;154(8):727-741.e10. doi: 10.1016/j.adaj.2023.04.018.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Corticosteroids are used to manage pain after surgical tooth extractions. The authors assessed the effect of corticosteroids on acute postoperative pain in patients undergoing surgical tooth extractions of mandibular third molars.TYPES OF STUDIES REVIEWED: The authors conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis. The authors searched the Epistemonikos database, including MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and the US clinical trials registry (ClinicalTrials.gov) from inception until April 2023. ...

A Patient with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis Presents for Dental Extraction
Patients with JIA, specifically the polyarticular subtype, may present with temporomandibular joint arthritis. Given the pain typically present in the joint, limitations in opening may be noted. As such, oral health and hygiene practices may be compromised in this patient population. Dental management considerations during treatment include shorter visits, safe measures to maintain mouth opening, frequent breaks during procedures, and counselling on condition management to reduce risks in the future. In dental extractions, bite blocks or props may be used to complete the procedure safely and reduce pain.

A Patient with Refractory Trigeminal Neuralgia was Referred for Suspected Odontogenic Pain
Chronic pain of the face with a sudden, unilateral, and electric shock-like pain in the distribution of the trigeminal nerve is known as Trigeminal neuralgia (TN). This case report presents a patient with TN symptoms, along with concomitant tooth pain. The diagnostic process and management of the patient are discussed, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration for optimal patient care.

DIY Dental Care — Safe or Dangerous?
The report, compiled from data from the State of Oral Health Equity in America survey, shares additional insights into home remedies used by consumers, including: Those who had not had a dental visit in the last two years were 10% more likely to use dangerous home remedies than those who had a dental visit more recently. Those who smoke used one or more dangerous home remedies twice as often as those who do not smoke. Individuals who identified as Black (62.4%) and as two or more race/ethnicities (60.0%) reported that they used a home remedy for oral health symptoms more often than individuals identifying as...

Dental anxiety and oral health-related quality of life before and after non-surgical periodontal treatment
ConclusionsAssociations of MDAS subcategories with OHIP-14 domain scores were found before and after therapy. DA decreases and OHRQoL enhances after NSPT in patients with “normal/slight” anxiety to dental treatment. Dental practitioners should plan strategies to cope with anxiety to dental treatment and prevent decreases in OHRQoL.Clinical relevanceWithin the limitations of this study, DA and OHRQoL were positively correlated in patients with periodontitis, before and after NSPT, using the MDAS and OHIP-14 questionnaires. The results of our study suggest that treatment is effective in terms of alleviating DA and improv...

Treatment of multiple adjacent gingival recessions with coronally advanced flap versus modified coronally advanced tunnel with a volumetrically stable collagen matrix: a 12-months randomized controlled clinical trial
CONCLUSIONS: Similar clinical results should be expected when MAGRs are treated with MCAF or MCAT, with the adjunct of VCMX.PMID:37471160 | DOI:10.11607/prd.6796

Comparison of the efficacy and long-term stability of tunnel technique and coronally advanced flap in the treatment of gingival recession: a Meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: This study discovered that both CAF+CTG and TUN+CTG can achieve good root coverage in treating gingival recession, with CAF outperforming TUN and both groups achie-ving good long-term stability. After the operation, the TUN group had a higher RES than the CAF group. Given the limitations of this study, more high-quality studies are needed in the future to demonstrate the efficacy of TUN in gingival retraction surgery.PMID:37474478 | DOI:10.7518/hxkq.2023.2023045

Vestibular Incision Subperiosteal Tunneling Approach (VISTA) with Platelets Rich Fibrin (PRF) vs Vestibular Incision Subperiosteal Tunneling Approach (VISTA) alone in multiple recession treatment. A Split mouth Randomized Clinical Trial
CONCLUSION: Multiple Miller Class 1 and Class 2 recessions in the maxilla can be effectively treated with VISTA. However, when used in conjunction with PRF no significant differences were detected in any parameter. VISTA has been shown to be associated with a low level of pain for patients following surgery and can be used for patients with high esthetic demand.PMID:37471151 | DOI:10.11607/prd.6536
