Abstract: Alterations of serotonin (5-HT) neurotransmission are implicated in post-stroke depression (PSD). Serotonin 1A (5-HT1A) receptor-based abnormalities have been the focus of intensive study in depression. Here we investigated the expression of the 5-HT1A receptor and gene in the hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) by chronic mild stress (CMS) after stroke and the effect of citalopram. Male Sprague–Dawley rats were separated into control, stress only, ischemic stroke, PSD and citalopram-treated groups. The putative PSD animal model involved cerebral ischemia induced by left middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) follo...

The two forms of cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) native to the oilseed rape or canola species Brassica napus, nap and pol, have novel features that may provide insight into the molecular mechanisms through which CMS/nuclear restorer systems evolve. One such feature is the finding that the distinct nuclear restorer genes for the two systems represent different alleles or haplotypes of the same nuclear locus. Improved understanding of how these systems have evolved will require molecular cloning and characterization of this novel locus. We have employed an approach that exploits the regional co-linearity between the Ara...

While it is well established that the lymphatic vasculature is central to fluid and solute homeostasis, how it accomplishes this task is not well defined. To clarify the basic mechanisms underlying basal fluid and solute homeostasis, we assessed permeability to rat serum albumin (PsRSA) in mesenteric collecting lymphatic vessels and venules of juvenile male rats. Using the quantitative microfluorometric technique originally developed for blood capillaries, we tested the hypothesis that as a consequence of venules and collecting lymphatics sharing a common embryological origin, their PsRSA would not differ significantly...
