CCHIT chief Mark Leavitt to retire

Mark Leavitt, MD, announced on Friday he would retire from his role as chairman of the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology on March 31.
According to the board of trustees, a national search for Leavitt's successor has been launched.
"The board accepts Mark's decision with reluctance but appreciates his commitment to overseeing a seamless transition," said H. Stephen Lieber, chairman of the board of trustees and president and CEO of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). (Source: Healthcare IT News)

CareSpark began a health information exchange covering 17 counties in the Tri-Cities Tennessee and Virginia area in November 2008 to improve the health of its residents.
As a mature HIE, CareSpark has a lot to offer emerging HIE efforts, said executive director Liesa Jenkins.

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society's EHR Usability Task Force has released a white paper focusing on the level of usability in electronic medical records and their implementation at healthcare organizations.
"Defining and Testing EMR Usability: Principles and Proposed Methods of EMR Usability Evaluation and Rating" identifies usability of software in an EMR as “one of the major factors and possibly the most important factor hindering widespread adoption of EMRs.” (Source: Healthcare IT News)

Day 1 of the 5th HIMSS Virtual Conference and Expo started out strong with attendees clamoring for healthcare IT information in the education sessions, exhibit hall and lounges. Participants were especially looking for more details on the federal stimulus funds.

The healthcare industry can expect "a lot of twists and turns" as the stimulus package funding and future health reform legislation unfolds, according to Rep. Michael Burgess, MD (R-Texas).
"We're all hopeful that along the way we're going to be able to save some money," he said.
Burgess was the keynote speaker at Tuesday morning's Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) virtual conference and expo. The two-day online conference consludes Wednesday. (Source: Healthcare IT News)
