Birth hospitalization in mothers with multiple sclerosis and their newborns
Conclusions: Birth hospitalization has been understudied in women with MS. Contrary to existing studies, we found that MS was not associated with a longer birth hospitalization. This study provides assurance to expectant mothers with MS, their families, and health care providers.

Increased incidence of multiple sclerosis in the Veneto region, Italy
Conclusion: Our findings support the hypothesis of a real increased risk of developing MS in the province of Padova. Moreover, the actual prevalence of 1.4/1000 makes our region a high-risk geographical area for MS. The role played by exogenous factors in determining susceptibility to MS needs to be thoroughly investigated.

A NOTCH4 missense mutation confers resistance to multiple sclerosis in Japanese
Conclusion: This NOTCH4 missense mutation decreased the risk for developing MS in Japanese, but did not affect clinical features of those who had already developed the disease.

Higher weight in adolescence and young adulthood is associated with an earlier age at multiple sclerosis onset
Conclusions: Women who reported higher weight in adolescence and BMI in early adulthood were younger at MS onset. Future research should investigate whether there is a causal link between body weight and MS, as prevention lifestyle and dietary interventions could be implemented.

TIMP-1 resistant matrix metalloproteinase-9 is the predominant serum active isoform associated with MRI activity in patients with multiple sclerosis
Conclusion: Our findings suggested that the TIMP-1 resistant MMP-9 seem to be the predominantly active isoform contributing to MS disease activity.

Adverse health behaviours are associated with depression and anxiety in multiple sclerosis: A prospective multisite study
Conclusion: Alcohol dependence and smoking were associated with anxiety and depression. Awareness of the effects of adverse health behaviours on mental health in MS might help target counselling and support for those ‘at risk’.

Sex differences in comorbidity at diagnosis of multiple sclerosis: A population-based study
Conclusions: Comorbidity is more common than expected in MS, even around the time of diagnosis. The prevalence of psychiatric comorbidity is particularly high and highlights the need for clinical attention to this issue. The observed sex-specific differences in the burden of comorbidity in MS, which differ from those in the matched population, warrant further investigation.

Examining the effects of comorbidities on disease-modifying therapy use in multiple sclerosis
Conclusions: Comorbidities are associated with treatment decisions regarding DMTs in MS. A better understanding of the effects of comorbidity on effectiveness and safety of DMTs is needed.

Health-related quality of life in multiple sclerosis: Direct and indirect effects of comorbidity
Conclusions: Increased disability, depression and anxiety symptoms, fatigue, and physical comorbidity are associated with decreased HRQoL in MS. Disability most strongly diminishes HRQoL and, thus, interventions that reduce disability are expected to yield the most substantial improvement in HRQoL. Yet, interventions targeting other factors amenable to change, particularly depression but also anxiety, fatigue, and physical comorbidities, may all result in meaningful improvements in HRQoL, as well. Our findings point to the importance of further research confirming the efficacy of such interventions.

The challenge of comorbidity in clinical trials for multiple sclerosis
Conclusion: Our recommendations will help address knowledge gaps regarding comorbidity that interfere with the ability to interpret safety in monitored trials and will enhance the generalizability of findings from clinical trials to "real world" settings where the MS population commonly has comorbid conditions.
