While kidney cancer is rare in children, Wilms tumor is the most common type found in kids, with between 500 and 600 children diagnosed annually in the U.S. The disease most often affects kids ages 3 to 4. Root of childhood kidney cancer discovered

Embryonal precursors of Wilms tumor
Adult cancers often arise from premalignant clonal expansions. Whether the same is true of childhood tumors has been unclear. To investigate whether Wilms tumor (nephroblastoma; a childhood kidney cancer) develops from a premalignant background, we examined the phylogenetic relationship between tumors and corresponding normal tissues. Single-cell transcriptomes from human kidneys reveal the cellular identity of renal tumors
Messenger RNA encodes cellular function and phenotype. In the context of human cancer, it defines the identities of malignant cells and the diversity of tumor tissue. Scientists Identify New Mechanisms Underlying Pediatric Kidney Cancer
In a new study, researchers have found that miRNA processing mutations exhibit higher levels of Pleomorphic adenoma gene 1 (PLAG1), a protein that normally functions during development to turn on IGF2 expression.
