When I was in kindergarten, a stray cat found her way into our backyard in upstate New York. As is the case with most stray cats, she quickly had a litter of kittens in our basement. We gave most of them to friends and neighbors, but we kept one little black and white kitten. I don’t remember exactly how, but somehow she got the name Abby. When my parents got divorced, my mom got the kids and my dad got the cat (that isn’t exactly how it went, but the result was the same). We all loved that cat so much, it wasn’t all that weird when my brother named his daughter the same thing almost ten years ago. This year, at Christma...

FAQ  Rose = reindeer. Bes = elf. Mostly because you couldn't see the scarf of the elf outfit through Rose's fur.I missed the first year and last year, but we have been taking a Christmas card picture together pretty much since I moved to Florida and away from family. (2008, 2007, 2006)Yes, they are sitting in the chair by themselves. They are kinda used to it... And when you put clothes on cats it throws off their sense of balance so they had trouble getting up even when they tried. They each weigh about 14 pounds. They have a small food dish and I only feed them once a day. Slow metabolism?I am not the crazy cat lady!

I love the Christmas season. I don't love that there is sooo much to do to get ready! I've done a little bit of my shopping but have several family members left to go. Does anyone have some good ideas for a 9 year old girl and an 8 year old boy? Or a good place/website for me to look? One thing that can definitely be crossed off the list is the annual Christmas card photo shoot. Finished that on Sunday. Here are some outtakes! If you want to see the actual card, make sure I have your address (e-mail me at sara [at] diabetesdaily [dot] com). You couldn’t tell by looking at me, but I moonlight as a tarot card reader for a 1-800 network. Honestly. A lot of people are surprised by this tidbit of information whenever they hear it — apparently most of us think the majority of psychics own hundreds of cats and reek of patchouli. But it’s been a good source of income for me for about a year now. Everyone has their own opinion about cards and clairvoyance, but in my world, these things are simply tools to help us along the highway of life. My opinions on the matter aside (believe me, I’ve had the “it’s real / it’s not realR...

If you’re a married woman, chances are you spend a lot of time chatting it up with your canine or cat instead of your human companion. According to a recent Associated Press/Petside poll, a third of married gals claim their furry live-ins are much better listeners than their husbands. Of the 1,112 people surveyed nationwide, one in 10 said they’d rather kvetch to their pet than their betrothed — and 18 percent of those respondents were actually men! Keep reading on Lemondrop. If you thought obese humans are the only creatures on earth susceptible to harm from a diet pill, consider overweight dogs, specifically those taking Pfizer’s Slentrol pill. The FDA is planning a pharmacogenomic study to determine whether reported adverse drug events are associated with genetic variations in the dogs treated with the pill, which was approved in 2007. Why? A preliminary analysis by the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine indicates potential correlations between certain dog breeds and some side effects, according to a notice in the Federal Register. What did you do over the weekend? I spent part of mine watching the 2006 movie Marie Antoinette. It wasn’t the best of the bunch, but it did move me. It got me thinking about a time when women had little power and control over their own lives. When things were decided for you and the world, in general, was chaotic and out of control. Watching the movie made me grateful for the time that we’re living in now. Yes, it is still chaotic and unpredictable. But for us fortunate ones, we have a lot more control over our emotions, perceptions and our well-being today than we did in the past. If you’re having some ...

Conventional wisdom goes that since, when given the classic and highly species-biased “mirror test”, cats “flunk” it, then they don’t know that their reflection is not themselves, and don’t in fact know that mirrors reflect things and that they can see behind themselves using mirrors and so forth. AnneC and I are trying to debunk a lot of similar myths about cats. The tests cats are given are often not cat-friendly and don’t reflect cats in their usual environment doing their usual things. When I was a kid, I used to watch He-Man (and the Masters of the Universe!!!) and thought pretty much any superpower could be summoned by standing in front of something big and gray and hollering "I have the POWER!!!"  This assumption also involved having a tough cat friend that would be my strong, clever sidekick.  Like Battle Cat, who was seriously badass.  "I have the POWER!!!!"  It would work in all kinds of situations, like when my blood sugar gets all crazytown and I need the insulin to start working immediately.  I'd stand in front of something gray, hold aloft my magical...

We bought a crinkly tube cat toy to keep the cats occupied during our attempt to train them to stay out of the bedroom (in preparation for BSparl's arrival).  More on that later, once I figure out how to actually keep them out of the damn room. Siah has claimed it as hers.  She sits in it for hours, forgetting how to get out.She looks like a dim little "cat"-erpillar, waiting to transform into a pain-in-the-butterfly.  Happy Sunday.  ;)

When I make a list of people who have helped with our move, this hobo cat is not on it. Give her a can of beans and a lighter and she's fine.  And I'm starting to wonder about that one ear there.  It's never quite straight.(Yes, posts are light this week.  My apartment is a mess, my job is grinding to a close, and my mind may have been accidentally FedEx'd to Boston.  Hoping someone signs for it.)

A lovely commenter, Fran, leaving a lovely comment:"PS how do you get your cats to sleep with you. all my cats have to sleep just out of arms reach - you wear cat nip?"Oh Fran.  It's not my fault.  I wish I could make it stop.  I do not wear cat nip.  I don't have a headband made of Tender Vittles.  I don't even leave any room for the stupid cat on the pillow.Yet she comes. And sleeps. On my head.Every night. (At least she's a decent back-up CGM.  As noted here.  And here.  And she's pretty darn cute, even though she's 16 lbs of fat cat mess.)

When Karen (from Bitter-Sweet Diabetes) was getting ready to go on her cruise, she realized she was tight on pump supplies.  But never fear - Fairfield County Dinner ladies are here!  I had some extra sets I could lend out to her, so she went on her cruise fully-stocked and ready for diabetes battle. And because she is a sweetheart, she returned the supplies to me (and lent me some IV prep wipe for my trip to Spain) - and also presented me with a little token of thanks. She made me a Sausage clone.   Siah meets her Yarn NemesisSiah was not sure what to make of this little gray clone, but she sniffed it for a f...

Even when I'm waking up in the morning and trying to test my blood sugar so I can stumble out of bed and begin my day, this cat gives me no peace.   Siah, you need a hobby.  One that doesn't involve me.

A recent article in the New York Times briefly discusses the utility of cats, and asserts that their lack of usefulness is attributed to the theory that in contrast to other domesticated animals, the cats have domesticated humans, and generally do not let the humans determine their breeding. Compared to sheepdogs, cats are generally less useful.  [...]

Kittens are the cutest things on the planet, there’s no doubt.  I could watch them for hours.  There are times when their kittenish antics make me laugh out loud. The kittens’ mothers are getting a little tired of their offspring though.  They want to be let out of their room to roam the house, and it’s harder to get them to go back in there than it was a couple of days ago. I’d like to encourage those seeking companion animals to look for a local animal rescue group from which to adopt. They usually vet the animals and make sure they’re suitable for a particular situation.  In my case, I ...

It’s not all purrs and frolicking here.  Not for me, anyway. I knew it wouln’t be easy taking care of 7 kittens and their 2 mothers, but I wasn’t prepared for the smell!  In no time flat, the room in which I’m keeping the cats has taken on a pretty icky odor.  I’m off work tomorrow, so I’ll spend some time cleaning up in there. I’m sure I’ll discover some hidden surprises. The cats have begun to hang out right by the door, so when I open it to go in to feed, scoop or play, they try to escape. The 2 mothers are the first to slip past.  The kittens are easier to herd back ...
