Cross‐sectional and dynamic change of serum metabolite profiling for Hepatitis B‐related acute‐on‐chronic liver failure by UPLC/MS
Summary
Summary Acute‐on‐chronic liver failure(ACLF) is an increasingly recognized entity encompassing an acute deterioration of liver function and results in the failure of one or more organs with high short‐term mortality. The focus of this study was to discover noninvasive and reliable biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of hepatitis B‐related ACLF. Ultra‐performance liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (UPLC/MS) was used to analyse serum metabolites of 28 patients with hepatitis B‐related ACLF, 35 patients with Child‐Pugh A cirrhosis, 30 patients with chronic hepatitis B and 35 healthy volunte...

Tenofovir halves HIV risk for injecting drug users
Conclusion
This was a well-conducted trial which has many strengths, including its very large sample size, long duration of follow-up, and regular and thorough assessments of HIV outcomes, adherence to treatment, adverse effects and risk counselling.
It found that daily oral tenofovir, when taken by injecting drug users, causes an almost 50% reduction in their relative risk of contracting HIV. It found that about seven to eight per 1,000 would develop HIV per year without taking tenofovir, reducing to three to four per 1,000 per year if they did take tenofovir.
Although the drug has been demonstrated to be effect...

Predicting the presence of hepatitis B virus surface antigen in Chinese patients by pathology data mining
Abstract
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a pathogen of worldwide health significance, associated with liver disease. A vaccine is available, yet HBV prevalence remains a concern, particularly in developing countries. Pathology laboratories have a primary role in the diagnosis and monitoring of HBV infection, through hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) immunoassay and associated tests. Analysis of HBsAg immunoassay and associated pathology data from 821 Chinese patients applied 10‐fold cross‐validation to establish classification decision trees (CDTs), with CDT results used subsequently to develop a logistic regression model...

Shift in the hepatitis B virus genotype distribution in the last decade among the HBV carriers from eastern India: Possible effects on the disease status and hbv epidemiology
Abstract
In a previous study from eastern India, the prevalence of HBV/C has been increasing among the blood donors. In order to analyze whether there has been any shift in HBV genotype distributions in recent years, the HBV genotypes prevalent during the periods 2000–2002 (Group‐I; n = 176) and 2007–2009 (Group‐II; n = 203) were compared, with special attention to changes in the proportion of HBV/C. The rate of prevalence of the three HBV genotypes (A, C, and D; percent prevalence 19.9/21.6/58.5 in Group‐I vs. 31.0/28.6/40.4 in Group‐II) underwent significant changes with increases in HBV/A and HBV/C a...

Hepatitis B and C virus infection among hemodialysis patients in yogyakarta, Indonesia: Prevalence and molecular evidence for nosocomial transmission
Abstract
Hemodialysis patients are at an increased risk of acquiring hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. However, the prevalence of hepatitis viral infection and its genotype distribution among hemodialysis patients in Indonesia are unclear. In order to investigate these issues and the possibility of nosocomial transmission, 161 hemodialysis patients and 35 staff members at one of the hemodialysis unit in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, were tested for serological and virological markers of both viruses. HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) was detected in 18 patients (11.2%) and in two staff members (5.7%). Anti...

Development of a Highly Sensitive Bioluminescent Enzyme Immunoassay for Hepatitis B Surface Antigen Capable of Detecting Divergent Mutants.
Abstract
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections are sometimes overlooked when using commercial kits to measure hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) due to their low sensitivity and hyporeactivity to mutant strains of various genotypes. We developed an ultrasensitive bioluminescent enzyme immunoassay (BLEIA) for HBsAg using firefly luciferase, which is adaptable to a variety of HBsAg mutants, by combining four monoclonal antibodies with a polyclonal antibody against HBsAg. The measurement of seroconversion panels showed trace amounts of HBsAg during the early infection phase by BLEIA because of its high sensitivity of 5 ...

Antiviral agents: structural basis of action and rational design.
Abstract
During the last 30 years, significant progress has been made in the development of novel antiviral drugs, mainly crystallizing in the establishment of potent antiretroviral therapies and the approval of drugs inhibiting hepatitis C virus replication. Although major targets of antiviral intervention involve intracellular processes required for the synthesis of viral proteins and nucleic acids, a number of inhibitors blocking virus assembly, budding, maturation, entry or uncoating act on virions or viral capsids. In this review, we focus on the drug discovery process while presenting the currently used metho...

Hepatitis B and C in Switzerland - healthcare provider initiated testing for chronic hepatitis B and C infection.
Abstract
Hepatitis B and hepatitis C are contagious liver diseases caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and the hepatitis C virus (HCV), respectively. In particular, chronic infection with HBV or HCV is a major public health problem throughout Europe. The majority of persons chronically infected (65%-75%) are not aware of their infection status until symptoms of advanced liver disease appear. In addition, the peak in the number of patients suffering from advanced stages of the disease, such as cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, has not yet been reached. In order to reduce the current and future morbidity and ...

Independent Factors Associated with Altered Plasma Active Ghrelin Levels in HCV‐infected Patients
ConclusionsWe demonstrated that liver cirrhosis and HCV infection were independent factors associated plasma active ghrelin levels. Moreover, plasma active ghrelin levels were positively correlated with serum albumin levels among HCV‐infected patients. Therefore, active ghrelin levels may be regulated by both progression of liver disease and HCV infection and could be involved in the regulation of serum albumin levels in HCV‐infected patients. This article is protected by copyright. Portal hypertension was detected by conventional imaging modalities, but signs of liver cirrhosis, thrombosis, stenosis, malformation of the portal vein, and bile duct abnormalities were not observed. We performed laparoscopy‐guided liver biopsy to examine the cause of portal hypertension. In ad...

Iatrogenic Blood-borne Viral Infections in Refugee Children from War and Transition Zones.
Abstract
Pediatric infectious disease clinicians in industrialized countries may encounter iatrogenically transmitted HIV, hepatitis B virus, and hepatitis C virus infections in refugee children from Central Asia, Southeast Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa. The consequences of political collapse and/or civil war-work migration, prostitution, intravenous drug use, defective public health resources, and poor access to good medical care-all contribute to the spread of blood-borne viruses. Inadequate infection control practices by medical establishments can lead to iatrogenic infection of children. Summaries of 4 cases in ...

Nationwide seroepidemiology of hepatitis B virus infection in South Korea in 2009 emphasizes the coexistence of HBsAg and anti‐HBs
In conclusion, the seroprevalence of HBsAg and anti‐HBs in Korea varies significantly by age, sex and geographical location and coexisted in 2.9% of HBsAg‐positive subjects. Continuous monitoring of seroepidemiology may facilitate the eventual eradication of HBV infection. J. Med. Virol. 9999:XX–XX, 2013. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Effect of hepatitis B virus infection on apoptosis of a human choriocarcinoma cell line in vitro
ConclusionHBV infected JEG‐3 cells in vitro, resulting in an inhibition of early and late stage apoptosis. In addition, the HBxAg/PI3K/pAKT pathway is a possible mechanism mediating this inhibition of apoptosis, and the infection of the placenta by HBV.
