Intestinal fibrosis and stricture formation are major complications of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), for which there are currently few effective treatments. We sought to investigate whether targeting transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-[beta]1), a key profibrotic mediator, with a peptide-based virus-like particle vaccine would be effective in suppressing intestinal fibrosis by using a mouse model of 2,4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced chronic colitis. The vaccine was prepared by inserting a peptide derived from mouse TGF-[beta]1 into a carrier hepatitis B core antigen using gene recombination methods. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is prevalent in China and screening of blood donors is mandatory. Up to now, ELISA has been universally used by the China blood bank. However, this strategy has sometimes failed due to the high frequency of nucleoside acid mutations. Understanding HBV evolution and strain diversity could help devise a better screening system for blood donors. However, this kind of information in China, especially in the northwest region, is lacking. In the present study, serological markers and the HBV DNA load of 11 samples from blood donor candidates from northwest China were determined. The HBV strains were most ...

Other metabolites deriving from a reduction or removal of the NHOH-group of L-Hyd4C could not be detected, although both reactions were described as the primary catabol...

Genomic data will become an increasingly important component of epidemiologic studies in coming years. The authors of the accompanying Journal article, van Ballegooijen et al. (Am J Epidemiol. 2009;XXX(XX):000-000), are to be commended for attempting to use the coalescent analysis of viral sequence data to evaluate a hepatitis B vaccination program. Coalescent theory attempts to link the phylogenetic history of populations with rates of population growth and decline. In particular, under certain assumptions, a reduction in genetic diversity can be interpreted as a reduction in disease incidence. However, the authors of...

The effect of vaccination programs on transmission of infectious disease is usually assessed by monitoring programs that rely on notifications of symptomatic illness. For monitoring of infectious diseases with a high proportion of asymptomatic cases or a low reporting rate, molecular sequence data combined with modern coalescent-based techniques offer a complementary tool to assess transmission. Here, the authors investigate the added value of using viral sequence data to monitor a vaccination program that was started in 1998 and was targeted against hepatitis B virus in men who have sex with men in Amsterdam, the Neth...

Chronic hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) virus infections are the most important factors associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but tumor prognosis remains poor due to the lack of diagnostic biomarkers. In order to identify novel diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets, the gene expression profile associated with viral and non-viral HCC was assessed in 9 tumor samples by oligo-microarrays. The differentially expressed genes were examined using a z-score and KEGG pathway for the search of ontological biological processes. We selected a non-redundant set of 15 genes with the lowest P value for clustering samples...

Conclusions: This study shows that bone mass and bone resorption rates do not differ between postmenopausal women with viral cirrhosis and healthy postmenopausal controls and suggests that viral cirrhosis does not appear to increase the risk of osteoporosis in these women. High serum estradiol and OPG concentrations may contribute to preventing the bone loss associated with viral cirrhosis in postmenopausal women.

In conclusion, the overexpression of survivin in the majority of NSCLCs together with the abundant or upregulated expression of HBXIP and XIAP suggest that tumours are endowed with resistance against a variety of apoptosis-inducing conditions.

Alterations of DNA methylation, which result in chromosomal instability and silencing of tumor-related genes, are among the most consistent epigenetic changes observed in human cancers. Analysis of tissue specimens has revealed that DNA methylation alterations participate in multistage carcinogenesis, even from the early and precancerous stages, especially in association with chronic inflammation and/or persistent viral infection, such as chronic hepatitis or liver cirrhosis resulting from infection with hepatitis B or C virus. DNA methylation alterations can account for the histological heterogeneity and clinicopathologic...

Rationale against Preoperative Screening for HIV in Polish Hospitals: A Prevalence Study of Anti‐HIV in Contrast to Anti–Hepatitis C Virus and Hepatitis B Surface Antigen •

We describe the prevalence of anti–human immunodeficiency virus (anti‐HIV) among a sample of 1,652 surgical and gynecologic patients in Polish hospitals, contrasting it with the prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and anti–hepatitis C virus (anti‐HCV) to assess the rationale for preoperative testing. No anti‐HIV–positive samples were found; the prevalence of anti‐HCV was 0.9%, slightly higher than the prevalence of HBsAg of 0.6%. Universal preoperative screening of hospital patients for HIV is currently not warranted according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. However...
