Palatal height and dental arch dimensions in Turner syndrome karyotypes.
Abstract
The aim of this project was to study the impact from Turner syndrome (TS) karyotype and age on dental arch morphology and palatal height and to compare the variables in TS with reference data from non-TS females with normal occlusion. Plaster casts from 76 females with TS (6-50 years) were analysed with respect to dentoalveolar arch dimensions and palatal height. The TS females were divided into the karyotype categories: i) 45,X ii) 45,X/46,XX iii) isochromosome, and iv) other. The 45,X/46,XX karyotype exhibited fewer statistically significant variables differing from the reference group compared with other...

Stability and relapse after orthodontic treatment of deep bite cases--a long-term follow-up study.
Abstract
The purpose of this long-term follow-up study was twofold-firstly, to assess prevalence of relapse after treatment of deep bite malocclusion and secondly, to identify risk factors that predispose patients with deep bite malocclusion to relapse. Sixty-one former patients with overbite more than 50% incisor overlap before treatment were successfully recalled. Clinical data, morphometrical measurements on plaster casts before treatment, after treatment and at long-term follow-up, as well as cephalometric measurements before and after treatment were collected. The median follow-up period was 11.9 years. Patien...

Analysis of crown widths in subjects with congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors
The aim of the study was to test the hypothesis that the gene defect causing congenital absence of maxillary lateral incisors also causes narrowing of the dentition. A total of 81 patients with one or two congenitally missing lateral incisors were retrieved; 52 (64.2 per cent) patients presented bilateral agenesis, whereas 29 (35.8 per cent) had unilateral agenesis. The control group consisted of 90 consecutively treated patients. The largest mesiodistal crown dimension for all teeth, except for the maxillary second and third molars, was measured on plaster casts using a digital caliper to the nearest 10th of a millimetre....

[Pediatric calcaneal fracture after supination trauma : Conservative therapy with an orthosis.]
We report the case of a 12-year-old boy with a calcaneal fracture due to a simple supination trauma. As magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a non-displaced extra-articular fracture no surgical treatment was necessary. A conservative therapy using calcaneal fracture orthosis with full weight bearing was carried out. Using this procedure allowed a comfortable means of movement without the need for a plaster cast immobilization or forearm crutches accompanied by a rapid return of the child to the normal daily routine.

Doctors, Dissection and Resurrection Men at the Museum of London - review | James Poskett
In 19th century London, only a select few could be guaranteed the chance to "rest in peace" after deathThere are certainly drawbacks to being dead, but let's not forget the benefits. Six feet under. Away from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis. Ahhh … peace at last. I'm almost looking forward to it. Sadly, in the early 1800s these perks were not available to everyone. As I enter the Museum of London's latest exhibition, Doctors, Dissection and Resurrection Men, I'm reminded how the epitaph "rest in peace" could only be guaranteed for a select few. A gilded iron coffin, complete with spring-loaded locks, is displayed ...

Murderer James Legg's gruesome tale revived for anatomy exhibition
Story of murderer's postmortem participation in crucifixion experiment resurrected for exhibition on medical ethics in 19th-century LondonThe crime of James Legg, a Chelsea pensioner who murdered a fellow pensioner more than two centuries ago, might well have been forgotten long ago had he not, unknowingly, participated postmortem in a bizarre scientific experiment.Instead, his story, and a plaster cast of the 73-year-old's corpse flayed to the muscle, will form the centrepiece of an exhibition on medical ethics and practices in bygone London. Legg's immortality in art owes everything to the efforts in 1801 of sculptor Tho...

[Dorsal radiocarpal joint dislocation for an 85-years-old woman.]
Abstract
The authors report the case of a dorsal, closed, radiocarpal dislocation with a small posterior marginal fracture of the radius, in an 85-year-old woman, without violent trauma (fall from her height). The dislocation was reduced by traction and the wrist immobilized in a plaster cast for 6 weeks. Six months after the accident, the patient had resumed her activities without pain with a diminished range of motion. This dislocation is exceptional at this age. In our case, the functional outcome was good after orthopaedic treatment.

1-Year clinical study of indirect resin composite restorations luted with a self-adhesive resin cement: effect of enamel etching.
Abstract
In vitro studies have recommended enamel-etching before luting indirect restorations with self-adhesive resin cement. However, there is no scientific proof that this procedure has any clinical relevance. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of enamel-etching on the marginal quality of indirect composite resin restorations (inlay/onlay) using the self-adhesive cement RelyX Unicem clicker. Forty-two posterior teeth were selected from 25 patients that presented one or two teeth with large restorations in need of replacement. All teeth were prepared by the same operator and impressed with pol...

Passive stretch reduces calpain activity through nitric oxide pathway in unloaded soleus muscles.
In conclusion, these results suggest that stretch can preserve the stability of sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+) release channels which prevents the elevated [Ca(2+)]i by means of keeping nNOS activity, and then the enhanced protein level and activity of calpain return to control levels in unloaded soleus muscles. Therefore, stretch can resist in part atrophy of unloaded soleus muscles.

Two-stage palatoplasty, is it still a valuable treatment protocol for patients with a cleft of lip, alveolus, and palate?
Conclusion: It appears that it was possible to show once more that closing the palate in one stage at age 1 year or less is interfering most with maxillary growth. This study leads us to conclude that two-stage palatoplasty is still a valuable treatment protocol for patients with a complete unilateral cleft of lip, alveolus, and palate, especially as apparently good guidance of speech development can lead to satisfactory speech for cleft patients in whom the hard palate was closed at a later age. Does the contact time of alginate with plaster cast influence its properties?
The aim of this study was to verify the influence of the time of contact between alginate and gypsum after the modeling procedure on the properties of the plaster cast, such as surface detail, dimensional stability and microhardness. Thirty cylindrical specimens of orthodontic gypsum Type III were made by means of impressions of a stainless steel master model which had five reference lines in the upper surface. The samples were divided into two groups: Group 1 (G1) - with time of contact of 1 hour; and Group 2 (G2) - 12 hours of contact. All the specimens were stored up to 48 hours until they underwent laboratory testing. ...

Metabolic activity in early tendon repair can be enhanced by intermittent pneumatic compression
Since Achilles tendon healing is protracted, more knowledge of metabolites known to meet the demands for biosynthesis and proliferation is needed. We hypothesized that essential metabolites, glutamate, glucose, lactate, pyruvate and glycerol, are present and upregulated in healing Achilles tendons. We moreover hypothesized that adjuvant intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC), which increases blood flow, upregulates metabolite concentrations. Twenty patients with acute Achilles tendon rupture were recruited, operated, and included. The control group, 15 patients, received plaster cast immobilization, while five patients r...

Economic evaluations of diagnostic tests, treatment and prevention for lateral ankle sprains: a systematic review.
ConclusionsResults of this current systematic review supplements the evidence provided by reviews of effectiveness. There is evidence to support the implementation of OAR in the emergency setting, the use of anti-inflammatory medication and the plaster cast in the acute phase, and the prescription of neuromuscular exercises to prevent re-injury. Although the evidence is limited due to the low number of studies, shortcomings in methodological quality and small sample sizes, the findings may be used to inform clinical practice and practice guidelines.

Computer-Aided Design of Customized Foot Orthoses: Reproducibility and Effect of Method Used to Obtain Foot Shape
Conclusions:
None of the techniques for obtaining foot shape met all the criteria for excellent reproducibility, with the peak arch height being particularly variable. Additional variability is added at the CAD stage of the FO design process, although with adequate operator experience good to excellent reproducibility may be achieved at this stage. Taking only basic linear or angular measurement parameters from the device may fail to fully capture the variability in FO design. (Source: Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation)

A Timetable for the Radiologic Features of Fracture Healing in Young Children
CONCLUSION. The results of this study show that fractures in young children may be dated as acute (< 1 week), recent (8–35 days), or old (≥ 36 days) on the basis of the presence of six key radiologic features in combination. Furthermore, good interobserver agreement suggests these results are reproducible. (Source: American Journal of Roentgenology)

Interventions for congenital talipes equinovarus (clubfoot).
CONCLUSIONS: From the limited evidence available, the Ponseti technique may produce better short-term outcomes compared to the Kite technique. An accelerated Ponseti technique may be as effective as a standard technique. We could draw no conclusions from other included trials because of the limited use of validated outcome measures and lack of available raw data. Future randomised controlled trials should address these issues.

A day in hospital
We spent 24 hours in Royal United Hospital Bath over the weekend, dealing with a broken arm. Here's what we learnt:The NHS is an amazing idea. To be treasured. I explained to my son that if we'd have been in the US we might have had to pay thousands dollars for the investigations, overnight stay and surgical care he'd received, even if we'd been able to claim it back. And that if we weren't insured or well- off who knows what sort of care we'd have received. A pox on the Tory modernisers who don't understand the law of unintended consequences, and a double pox on those who want to privatise the NHS. And their cheerleaders....

Poem of the week: Prints by Helen Tookey
Tookey grows people from the prehistoric footprints on Formby Beach in this powerful act of imaginative sympathy with the pastThis week's poem, "Prints" by Helen Tookey, has a fascinating setting. Formby Beach is an important archaeological site, where profusions of prehistoric human footprints have been discovered, baked into the mud-layers beneath the sand. The natural processes which reveal the footprints also endanger them, as, once exposed, they are soon erased by tides."Prints" takes the footprints, adults' and children's, and grows people from them. It's perhaps, also, a mirror of opposing forces, with its compact s...

Palatal Rugae Pattern in a Portuguese Population: A Preliminary Analysis.
Abstract
Palatal rugae have been related with specific racial groups and are said to be useful in sex discrimination. This work aimed to characterize the palatal rugae patterns in a Portuguese population. Fifty plaster casts were examined for first and third rugae shape evaluation; shape, frequency, and association with sex were studied. In females, the most prevalent first rugae were the straight type on the right and the curve type on the left; in males, the straight type was the most prevalent on both sides. The most frequent third rugae type was sinuous on both sides, in both sexes. No significant sexual di...

Missing the Lisfranc Fracture: A Case Report and Review of the Literature
Abstract: Injuries to the tarsometatarsal joint are infrequent and the presentation varies. The radiologic evaluation can be difficult, and injuries are missed initially in up to one third of cases. A 60-year-old female sports instructor presented to the emergency department with a Lisfranc fracture dislocation of the foot as result of an indirect trauma. The patient attended to a hospital the day she sustained the injury, where the Lisfranc fracture was missed. At our hospital, the patient underwent immediate restoration of the dislocation. Because of swelling, internal fixation was applied 2 weeks later. Postoperatively,...

Photographs of dental casts or digital models: rating dental arch relationships in bilateral cleft lip and palate
Abstract: Yardsticks have been developed to measure dental arch relations in cleft lip and palate (CLP) patients as diagnostic proxies for the underlying skeletal relationship. Travelling with plaster casts to compare results between CLP centres is inefficient so the aim of this study was to investigate the reliability of using digital models or photographs of dental casts instead of plaster casts for rating dental arch relationships in children with complete bilateral cleft lip and palate (CBCLP). Dental casts of children with CBCLP (n=20) were included. Plaster casts, digital models and photographs of the plaster casts w...

Multiple Tenotomies after Ponseti Method for Management of Severe Rigid Clubfoot
Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of multiple tenotomies performed after application of the Ponseti method in reducing the tendency for recurrence in the severe rigid idiopathic clubfoot and limiting the need for application of the hyperabduction brace in the prewalking age. From November 2002 to December 2004, 30 severe (Pirani >5), rigid (nonresilient), idiopathic clubfeet in newly born infants aged 2 to 24 days were treated by the Ponseti method of weekly manipulations and castings until achieving full correction, apart from equinus. With the patient under general anesthesia, throug...
