Animal models of sleep disorders.
Abstract Problems with sleep affect a large part of the general population, with more than half of all people in the United States reporting difficulties with sleep or insufficient sleep at various times and about 40 million affected chronically. Sleep is a complex physiologic process that is influenced by many internal and environmental factors, and problems with sleep are often related to specific personal circumstances or are based on subjective reports from the affected person. Although human subjects are used widely in the study of sleep and sleep disorders, the study of animals has been invaluable in developi...

Making Sense Of The Neurobiology Of Restless Legs Syndrome And Related Insomnia
Johns Hopkins researchers believe they may have discovered an explanation for the sleepless nights associated with restless legs syndrome (RLS), a symptom that persists even when the disruptive, overwhelming nocturnal urge to move the legs is treated successfully with medication. Neurologists have long believed RLS is related to a dysfunction in the way the brain uses the neurotransmitter dopamine, a chemical used by brain cells to communicate and produce smooth, purposeful muscle activity and movement... Mirtazapine Provokes Periodic Leg Movements during Sleep in Young Healthy Men

Actigraphic assessment of periodic leg movements in patients with restless legs syndrome
We examined 12 responders to dopaminergic treatment and 12 non‐responders and studied the association between response to dopaminergic treatment and the periodic limb movement index (PLMI) as assessed with actigraphy. Demographic characteristics, excessive daytime sleepiness and fatigue at baseline were similar in all three groups. Baseline RLS severity was similar between responders and non‐responders [International Restless Legs Severity Scale (IRLS): 25 ± 9 and 24 ± 8]. Group comparisons of PLMI before treatment initiation showed significant differences between the three groups. Post‐hoc pairwise comparisons...

The Baroque and its influence on Willis’ description of restless legs syndrome
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) was first described in 1672 by Thomas Willis (1621–1675), a brilliant English physician who lived during the Baroque . The Baroque often is defined as the art or culture of the counter-reformation , an expression of specific values that were inherent to the conflicted state of the human soul during that time. The cardinal symptom of RLS is the imperious, compulsive, irresistible urge to move one’s legs . It is an inner disposition towards disquiet, which also is present in all artistic manifestations of the Baroque. The symptoms of RLS express the antitheses of rest and motion, calm and sto...

We report a 48-year-old man who had dreams of uncomfortable sensations in the legs once a week for the past 15years. During his dreams he had to run to get relief from symptoms, and when he was tired of running he had to rest. However, the unpleasant sensations in his legs would return, and he would have to run faster and faster to get relief from symptoms. When he woke up, he would have severe discomfort in his legs, similar to what he felt while he was dreaming. He had to move his legs and walk to improve the symptoms so that he could go back to sleep. He never experienced unpleasant sensations in his legs when he went t...

A time sequence analysis of the relationship between cardiovascular risk factors, vascular diseases and restless legs syndrome in the general population
Summary Previous cross‐sectional studies regarding the association of restless legs syndrome (RLS) with cardiovascular morbidity are controversial. Our aim was to evaluate prospectively the relationship of cardiovascular risk factors and vascular diseases with incident RLS in the general population. The results are from two prospective population‐based cohort studies: the Dortmund Health Study (n = 1312, median follow‐up of 2.1 years) and the Study of Health in Pomerania (n = 4308, median follow‐up of 5.0 years). RLS status was assessed twice according to the minimal criteria. Diabetes, hypertension, myocardi...
