Increasing Reciprocal Social Interactions Between Children Who Use Augmentative and Alternative Communication and Peers Using a Collaborative Learning Framework
CONCLUSIONS: Collaborative learning frameworks may be used to increase reciprocal social interactions between children who use AAC and their peers. Speech-language pathologists should consider utilizing collaborative learning elements in activities with children who use AAC. Future research is needed to further explore collaborative learning frameworks for interventions for children who use AAC.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.25464064.PMID:38536727 | DOI:10.1044/2024_AJSLP-23-00405 (Source: American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology)

Project Building Bridges: A Framework for Preparing Highly Qualified Speech-Language Pathologists to Serve Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students With Augmentative and Alternative Communication Needs
CONCLUSIONS: Project Building Bridges provides a framework for preparing highly qualified speech-language pathologists to serve culturally and linguistically diverse students who benefit from AAC as evidenced by pre- and postsurvey results. The project can serve as a model for other university programs in the development of preservice preparation programs focusing on culturally and linguistically diverse students with AAC needs.PMID:38536710 | DOI:10.1044/2024_AJSLP-23-00257 (Source: American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology)

Evaluating Speaker-Listener Cognitive Effort in Speech Communication Through Brain-to-Brain Synchrony: A Pilot Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Investigation
CONCLUSIONS: We found that effortful speech processing decreased interbrain synchrony and delayed comprehension processes. The obtained brain-based and behavioral patterns are consistent with our proposal that cognitive effort in verbal communication pertains to both the listener and the speaker and that brain-to-brain synchrony can be an indicator of differences in their cumulative communicative effort.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.25452142.PMID:38535722 | DOI:10.1044/2024_JSLHR-23-00476 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Dysphagia therapy in adults with a tracheostomy: A scoping review protocol
DISCUSSION: The scoping review aims to expand upon the existing literature in this field. A detailed description of the evidence is required to facilitate clinical discussions and develop therapeutic protocols in a tracheostomised population. The results of this scoping review will support future research in dysphagia therapy and provide the basis for the development of best practice guidelines.WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on this subject There is an abundance of evidence available regarding dysphagia therapy targeting impairments of the swallowing sequence in a variety of populations including stroke, head ...

The Quantification of Radiation Fibrosis Using Clinically Indicated Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Head and Neck Cancer Patients
AbstractCurrently, no objective method exists to measure the extent of fibrosis in swallowing musculature in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients. We developed and psychometrically tested a method of quantifying fibrosis volume using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).  The overall aim of this study was to determine if clinical MRI is a reliable tool to measure fibrosis of the pharyngeal musculature in patients with HNC managed with RT and to assess its potential to capture changes in fibrosis over time. Eligible participants were adults with HNC treated with rad iation therapy (RT) who received minimally two MRIs and videof...

Contribution of a bonded scholarship scheme to staffing rural health facilities
CONCLUSION: The UYDF Scholarship Scheme has shown that investment in rural students through a bonded scholarship can contribute to staffing rural PHCFs, as >90% of graduates worked at rural PHCFs, and for some disciplines >70% of graduates worked for ≥5 years at a rural PHCF. Allied HCPs worked on average for longer periods at rural PHCFs than doctors.PMID:38525572 | DOI:10.7196/SAMJ.2024.v114i3.1608 (Source: South African Medical Journal)

Stability Over Time of Word Syllable Duration for Speakers With Acquired Apraxia of Speech
CONCLUSIONS: Results indicate that WSD can be a stable measure over time, at the individual and group level, providing support for its use in diagnosis and/or as an outcome measure, both clinically and for research. In general, WSD outperformed WSD-5, suggesting that it may be better to calculate WSD from more than five tokens. Stability of WSD in other populations and suitability for differential diagnosis need to be determined. Currently, differentiating disorders by speaking rate, alone, is not recommended.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.25438735.PMID:38527280 | DOI:10.1044/2024_JSLHR-23-00007 (Sour...
