Primary Intracranial Extra-Axial and Supratentorial Atypical Rhabdoid Tumoremail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
We report on magnetic resonance imaging findings of a 22-month-old boy with a biopsy-proven primary rhabdoid tumor, presenting as a single intracranial supratentorial extra-axial mass. Based on the patient's age and imaging features (perfusion, diffusion magnetic resonance imaging, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy), a diagnosis of atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor was more accurate than diagnoses of meningioma and primitive neuroectodermal tumor. Although this entity is relatively rare, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of dural-based, space-occupying central nervous system lesions. (Source: Pediatric Neurology)

Abstract: Primary neuroendocrine tumors of the gallbladder (GB) and extrahepatic biliary ducts (EHBDs) include carcinoid tumors and small-cell carcinomas (SCCs). They are uncommon, and therefore, little is known about their demographics and clinical course. From National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program (1973-2005), we analyzed the demographics and 10-year relative survival rates of carcinoids and SCCs of the GB and EHBD according to histologic type and stage. There were 119 cases of carcinoid tumors and 54 cases of SCCs in the GB. There were 31 carcinoid tumors and 17 SCCs in the EHBD...

In this report, we describe the diagnosis and clinical management of a large liver tumor in a 3-year-old child that displayed the features of both, conventional hepatoblastoma and malignant teratoma. Pathological assessment on a pre-operative bioptical specimen showed an immature teratoid tumor with no area of hepatoblastic differentiation present. Histological and immunhistological examination of the resected tumor specimen additionally showed tumor areas of very different differentiation pattern intermixed with each other, namely areas of hepatoblastoma-typical and neuroblastoma-like morphology as well a areas of rhadomy...

Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, the current study represents the first genomic exploration of PL. The genomic aberration pattern of PL appears to be more similar to that of DLBCL (AIDS-related or non AIDS-related) than to PCM. Our findings suggest that PL may remain best classified as a subtype of DLBCL at least at the genome level. (Source: Journal of Hematology and Oncology)

Beta-catenin accumulation is suppressed by TGF-beta1 (transforming growth factor beta1) in intestinal epithelium suggesting negative feedback between these two factors. Besides that, beta-catenin interacts with HIF-1alpha (hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha) at the promoter region of HIF-1 target genes. Our study was aimed at comparison of beta-catenin with HIF-1alpha, TGF-beta1, Ki67 and survival of sporadic colorectal cancer patients. Expressions of beta-catenin, TGF-beta1, HIF-1alpha, Ki67 were evaluated in triads of specimens of each primary tumor of 72 sporadic colorectal cancers with immunohistochemistry due to limi...

Abstract  Gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEPNETs) are rare neoplasms that require a multidisciplinary approach for an optimal management. The traditional cytotoxic agents are of limited efficacy in the treatment of these tumors. A better understanding of the molecular pathways that characterize tumor growth has provided novel targets in cancer treatment. Several proteins have been implicated as having a crucial role in GEPNETs. Several proangiogenic molecules are overexpressed in GEPNETs including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its receptors, and related signaling pathway compone...

By introducing minimally-attenuating longitudinal waves at a significantly high frequency into tissue, shear waves produced at interfaces by mode conversion will be detectable in stiff regions, but will be significantly attenuated and thus not detectable in the surrounding soft...

The World Health Organization (WHO) classification of myeloid and lymphoid neoplasms utilizes morphology, immunophenotype, genetics and clinical features to define disease entities of clinical significance. It is a consensus classification in which a number of experts have agreed on the classification and diagnostic criteria. In general, the classification stratifies neoplasms according to their lineage (myeloid, lymphoid, histiocytic/dendritic) and distinguishes neoplasms of precursor cells from those comprised of functionally mature cells. Lymphoid neoplasms are derived from cells that frequently have features that r...

Conclusions Solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura is a rare disease that includes both benign and malignant variants. The outcome is mostly benign, with an overall 10-year survival rate of 97.5%. Pathologically benign lesions show a better disease-free survival rate than malignant lesions (95.7% versus 67.1%; p < 0.05). Surgery is the gold standard of treatment as neither radiotherapy nor chemotherapy proved to be effective. (Source: The Annals of Thoracic Surgery)

The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinicopathologic presentation and outcome of patients with appendiceal tumors treated at our institution over a 15-year period. We identified patients with appendiceal tumors diagnosed or treated at our institution from January 1989 through May 2004. Chart review for age, gender, signs and symptoms at diagnosis, and treatment was performed. Review of the pathologic specimens was performed and tumors were classified as DPAM, PMCA I/D, or PMCA. Forty patients were identified (median age 52.5 years; males 38%). The number of patients with DPAM, PMCA I/D, and PMCA was ...

OBJECTIVE: This review aims to discuss the clinical application of cytogenetic and molecular testing in the diagnosis and prognosis of orbital tumors and, in so doing, highlight the basis of these methods, their advantages, and limitations. SUMMARY: Specific chromosomal aberrations are detected in many lymphoproliferative neoplasms, soft tissue tumors, and in a few benign tumors of the orbit. Detection of these characteristic chromosomal translocations is most helpful to refine the diagnosis and classification, especially when the tumor is poorly differentiated and shows overlapping morphological features with another ...

Abstract  Family history of testicular cancer is an established risk factor for adult testicular germ cell tumors (GCT). We evaluated the association between family history of cancer and pediatric GCT in a Children’s Oncology Group case–control study that included 274 GCT cases (195 female and 79 male) diagnosed <age 15 years and 418 controls frequency matched to cases on sex and age. Family history data were collected through telephone interviews with biological mothers and fathers and unconditional logistic regression was used to evaluate associations with GCT adjusting for potential confounders...

Malignant solitary fibrous tumor arising from the pineal region: case study and literature reviewemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
We report a case of malignant solitary fibrous tumor involving the pineal region in a 49-year-old woman. The patient presented with headache, slowly progressive weakness of the right lower extremities and upgaze palsy over the past year. Histologically, the tumor was composed of moderately hypercellular proliferated spindle cells with eosinophilic collagen bands. These cells were diffusely and strongly immunoreactive with CD34, CD99, and vimentin, but were negative with epithelial membrane antigen, S-100 protein, Bcl-2, smooth muscle actin, cytokeratin and glial fibrillary antigenic protein. MIB-1 labeling indices and mito...

MBP-1 Suppresses Growth and Metastasis of Gastric Cancer Cells through COX-2.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Monitoring Editor: Richard K. Assoian The c-Myc promoter binding protein 1 (MBP-1) is a transcriptional suppressor of c-myc expression and involved in control of tumorigenesis. Gastric cancer is one of the most frequent neoplasms and lethal malignancies worldwide. So far, the regulatory mechanism of its aggressiveness has not yet been clearly characterized. Here we studied roles of MBP-1 in gastric cancer progression. We found that cell proliferation was inhibited by MBP-1 overexpression in human stomach adenocarcinoma SC-M1 cells. Colony formation, migration, and invasion abilities of SC-M1 cells were suppressed by MB...

Tumor response in the B6C3F1 mouse, F344 rat, and other animal models following exposure to various compounds provides evidence that people exposed to these or similar compounds may be at risk for developing cancer. Although tumors in rodents and humans are often morphologically similar, underlying mechanisms of tumorigenesis are often unknown and may be different between the species. Therefore, the relevance of an animal tumor response to human health would be better determined if the molecular pathogenesis were understood. The underlying molecular mechanisms leading to carcinogenesis are complex and involve multiple ...

We report two cases of intracranial germinoma, in which it was necessary to distinguish between intracranial germinoma and metastatic carcinoma in cytological specimens. Cytologically, not only single tumor cells or loosely connective tumor cells but also closely packed clusters of cells and pair cells were recognized. Immunocytochemically, almost all tumor cells were immunoreactive for M2A, placental alkaline phosphatase, and c-kit. Closely packed clusters were also immunoreactive for pan-cytokeratin. Therefore, Cytopathologists should be aware that tumor cell clusters, mimicking carcinoma might appear in cytological spec...
