CONCLUSION: Findings on ultrasound contrast examination differed between benign and malignant tumors but there was a substantial overlap in contrast findings between benign and borderline tumors. It appears that ultrasound contrast examination is not superior to conventional ultrasound techniques, which also have difficulty in distinguishing between benign and borderline tumors, but can easily differentiate invasive malignancies from other tumors. This study is not the first to indicate a connection between apigenin and decreased cancer risk. Previous research has found that apigenin decreases the structural stability and inhibits the expression of a protein that is involved in the migration of ovarian cancer cells to other parts of the body. It has also been more directly observed to interfere with the movement of ovarian cancer cells. Apigenin has also been shown to inhibit the expression in ovarian cancer cells of a protein linked to the development of blood vessels in tumors, as well as overall tumor growth.Other studies have found that apigenin inhibits the gro...

Reported herein is an unusual vascular tumor primary arising in the liver and exhibiting unique histopathological features. A 47-year-old woman underwent left hepatectomy because of a large hepatic mass. On histology the tumor had a composite pattern, consisting of angiomatous, retiform and solid areas, formed by oval to cuboidal to spindle cells, that expressed only endothelial markers (CD31 and factor VIII-related antigen). These findings led to the diagnosis of a low-grade vascular neoplasm with morphological features consistent with so-called polymorphous hemangioendothelioma. The tumor was completely resected. In this study, the expressions of p27Kip1-interacting proteins, i.e., p27Kip1, Skp2, Cks1, cyclin A, cyclin E, and the Ki-67 labeling index (LI), were analyzed in 25 CCAFs (11 benign and 14 borderline) and 15 CCAF-associated CCAs, and compared with the expression status of each protein in the 23 previously studied endometriosis-associated CCAs. Although aberrant expression of all p27Kip1-interacting proteins was more frequent in the CCAF-associated CCAs than in the benign CCAFs, statistical significance was found only for Cks1 overexpression. Abstract: Women may be genetically susceptible to development of gynecological cancers. Major familial ovarian cancer syndromes include site-specific ovarian cancer, breast/ovarian cancer, and hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer (HNPCC). The former two syndromes are linked to BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes while DNA repair genes such as hMSH2 and hMLH1 are commonly involved in HNPCC. Carriers are also prone to endometrial carcinoma. BRCA mutation related ovarian tumours are more likely to be high grade serous whilst borderline tumours are conspicuously absent. Papillary serous carcinomas of the peritoneum and fallopian tube are a...

Ovarian low malignant potential tumor account for 10 to 20 percent of ovarian epithelial tumors. They differ from typical ovarian cancers in that they do not grow into the ovarian stroma. Likewise, if they spread outside the ovary, for example, into the abdominal cavity, they do not usually grow into the lining of the abdomen. These cancers tend to affect women at a younger age than the typical ovarian cancers and are less life-threatening than most ovarian cancers. Guidelines for surgical treatment of borderline ovarian tumors are similar to those for ovarian cancer and include hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oop...

The nephrectomy showed a markedly enlarged kidney replaced by a large cystic mass filled with mucin and with almost complete destruction of the renal parenchyma. Histologically, the mass was lined primarily by simple mucinous epithelium and showed foci of adenomatous (borderline) change with focal areas exhibiting intraepithelial carcinoma. No invasion was documented after extensive sampling of the tumor. A pathologic diagnosis of intraepith...

Claudins (CLDNs) are essential proteins of tight junctions. Changes in their expression pattern have been demonstrated in a number of tumors. CLDNs-3 and -4 are receptors of the Clostridium perfringens enterotoxin, cytolytic effects of the toxin are well known. The aim of our studies was to compare the different CLDN expression patterns in normal pancreas cells, pancreatic endocrine tumors, adenocarcinomas, mucinous cystic tumors and acinar cell carcinomas. Expressions of CLDN-1, -2, -3, -4 and -7 proteins were examined using immunohistochemical as well as RT-PCR techniques and the following observations were made: 1.)...

p63 plays a key role in epithelial development in various organs, being expressed in myoepithelial cells and in basal cells of stratified epithelia. In the female genital tract, p63 is expressed in the basal and parabasal cells of mature cervical, vaginal and vulval squamous epithelium, and also in cervical reserve cells at the transformation zone and in immature metaplastic and atrophic cervical squamous epithelium. In this review, the diagnostic utility of p63 immunohistochemical staining in various pathologic scenarios within the female genital tract is discussed. Cervical microglandular hyperplasia is p63 positive with...

Ovarian Low-grade and High-grade Serous Carcinoma: Pathogenesis, Clinicopathologic and Molecular Biologic Features, and Diagnostic Problemsemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Ovarian serous carcinomas have been graded using various systems. Recently, a 2-tier system in which tumors are subdivided into low grade and high grade has been proposed. This approach is simplistic, reproducible, and based on biologic evidence indicating that both tumors develop via different pathways. Low-grade serous carcinomas exhibit low-grade nuclei with infrequent mitotic figures. They evolve from adenofibromas or borderline tumors, have frequent mutations of the KRAS, BRAF, or ERBB2 genes, and lack TP53 mutations (Type I pathway). The progression to invasive carcinoma is a slow step-wise process. Low-grade tumors ...

Common genetic variations in the LEP and LEPR genes, obesity and breast cancer incidence and survivalemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Abstract  Obesity is a strong risk factor for breast cancer in postmenopausal women and adverse prognostic indicator regardless of menopausal status. Leptin is an important regulator of adipose tissue mass and has been associated with tumor cell growth. Leptin exerts its effects through interaction with the leptin receptor (LEPR). We investigated whether genetic variations in the leptin (LEP) and LEPR genes are associated with risk of breast cancer, or once diagnosed, with survival. The polymorphisms LEP G-2548A and LEPR Q223R were characterized in population-based study consisting of mostly European-American ...

Nuclear expression of Snail1 in borderline and malignant epithelial ovarian tumours is associated with tumour progressionemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Conclusion: Nuclear Snail1 expression seems to be related to tumour progression, and expression in borderline tumours indicates a role for Snail1 in early epithelial ovarian tumour development. Snail1 also appears to function more generally in tissue remodelling as positive staining was demonstrated in stromal cells. (Source: BMC Cancer)

Conclusion Results confirm the radiation sensitivity of the breast in girls age 10 to 20 years but do not demonstrate a strong effect of age at exposure within this range. Irradiation of the ovaries at doses greater than 5 Gy seems to lessen the carcinogenic effects of breast irradiation, most likely by reducing exposure of radiation-damaged breast cells to stimulating effects of ovarian hormones. The presence of myomas in pregnancy is associated with greater blood loss at delivery. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the sonographic characteristics of myomas can predict blood loss at delivery in women with large myomas.Among women who underwent second-trimester ultrasound screening at our department between January 1996 and December 2004, 251 had at least one myoma with a mean diameter [ge] 5 cm. Number of myomas (single vs. multiple), maximum diameter of the largest myoma, sum of the maximum diameter of each myoma, change in size of myomas between first and last scan, and location in relation to the plac...

Mucinous adenocarcinoma as heterologous element in intermediately differentiated Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor of the ovary.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor (SLCT) is a rare tumor involving the ovary. Approximately 20% of SLCT are associated with heterologous elements that are either of endodermal or mesodermal origin. The gastrointestinal-type epithelium is the most commonly described endodermal heterologous element. SLCT with benign and borderline mucinous neoplasm has been reported in the literature. However, SLCT with mucinous adenocarcinoma as heterologous element has been rarely documented. Herein, we describe a rare case of intermediately differentiated Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor with mucinous adenocarcinoma as the heterologous element in a ...

Abstract  In a previous study from our laboratory, high tumor levels of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1) have been associated with an adverse response to chemotherapy in metastatic breast cancer suggesting that TIMP-1, which is known to inhibit apoptosis, may be a new predictive marker in this disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between TIMP-1 and objective response to chemotherapy in an independent patient population consisting of patients with metastatic breast cancer from Sweden and Denmark. TIMP-1 was measured using ELISA in 162 primary tumor extracts fro...

The circadian gene NPAS2 is a novel prognostic biomarker for breast canceremail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Abstract  Mounting evidence suggests that neuronal PAS domain protein 2 (NPAS2) and other circadian genes are involved in tumorigenesis and tumor growth, possibly through their control of cancer-related biologic pathways. A missense polymorphism in NPAS2 (Ala394Thr) has been shown to be associated with risk of human tumors including breast cancer. The current study further examined the prognostic significance of NPAS2 in breast cancer by genotyping the Ala394Thr polymorphism and measuring NPAS2 expression. DNA extracted from 348 breast cancer tissue samples was analyzed for NPAS2 genotype using the TaqMan allel...
