Many of us grew up with a stereotypical life plan: I'll go to school, college, get a job, get married, have a family, get a home, and maybe even have a white picket fence and a dog. “Then magically, at 65, I will retire and can finally relax.” Some of these notions have faded into oblivion - in fact, “retirement” has been virtually redefined. We have reached a critical mass in which Baby Boomers now say they do not plan to retire. Retirees are applying for jobs, either out of economic necessity or the realization that it’s not “greener” on the golf course or tennis court. These individuals comprise what ...

It has been well established that a crisis exists in the biomedical research enterprise of clinical surgery departments: the extinction of the surgeon-scientist. A number of factors, including dwindling research funding, decreasing reimbursement from insurance providers, shrinking salaries for researchers, waning interest in academia among graduating residents, and financial pressures on departments for greater clinical productivity, have contributed to this phenomenon in recent years.1 More importantly, the growing number of basic scientists who are competing with clinicians for investigator-initiated funding from the Nat...

A new study that came out last week reports that half of American kids will receive food stamps before the age of 20. Mark Schuster, MD, PhD, chief of the division of General Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Boston, says that while the findings are sobering, they don’t come as a surprise. “The public perception is that food stamps primarily go to families that are dependent on them for many years. The reality, however, is that many families go through periods of economic difficulty and programs like food stamps can help make the difference in getting them through rough times.”
The study revealed that while 20 perc...

However the future points to knowledge transfers, science networks and developing bridges between industry, academia and public sector policy. Collaboration across the continent and diversification of research can result in a integrated European research base that leads the world in innovation and success. Chinese scientists claim to be able to control the weather. But is so-called geoengineering more than wishful thinking? And, if so, should we be worried? The unseasonal snow that fell on Beijing for 11 hours on Sunday was the earliest and heaviest there has been for years. It was also, China claims, man-made. By the end of last month, farmland in the already dry north of China was suffering badly due to drought. So on Saturday night China's meteorologists fired 186 explosive rockets loaded with chemicals to "seed" clouds and encourage snow to fall. "We won't miss any opportunity of artificial precipitation since Beijing is ...

The current recession has produced a flood of management "experts" and many leaders of organizations whose only strategy for dealing with the downturn in the economy is cutting costs, layoffs and more efficiency based strategies. Yet much of the rationale for and evidence supporting efficiency as a key management strategy is questionable.
