The anti-inflammatory agent bindarit inhibits neointima formation in both rats and hyperlipidaemic miceemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Conclusion This study demonstrates that bindarit is effective in reducing neointima formation in both non-hyperlipidaemic and hyperlipidaemic animal models of vascular injury by a direct effect on VSMC proliferation and migration and by reducing neointimal macrophage content. All of these data were associated with the inhibition of MCP-1 production. (Source: Cardiovascular Research)

In this study, we investigate the possible role of gelatinases and the effect of a nonselective ETA/ETB receptor antagonist, TAK-044 (5 mg/kg body weight/day, subcutaneously [sc]), on these enzymes. Our results demonstrated that both MMP-2 and MMP-9 activities increased in response to collaring in placebo group, while treatment with TAK-044 significantly suppressed both gelatinase activities and proMMP-2 levels, and inhibited intimal thickening in collared arteries. These results suggest that either enhanced MMP expression or endothelin receptor antagonism may be involved in the formation of intimal thickening in this mode...

Abstract: The management of a ruptured pseudoaneurysm of intracranial vertebral artery (VA), which is the sole supplier to an isolated vertebrobasilar system, is challenging. The authors report on such a case in a 49-year-old man who suffered a grade III subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) caused by a dissecting fusiform pseudoaneurysm of the left VA. The right VA terminated in the posterior inferior cerebellar artery and posterior communicating arteries were absent. The patient developed symptoms consistent with vasospasm on day 9 after SAH, which was treated by intra-arterial vasolytic therapy, followed by stent placement and ...

To understand the role of human 15-lipoxygenase 1 (15-LOX1) in vascular wall remodeling, we have studied the effect of the major 15-LOX1 metabolite of arachidonic acid, 15(S)-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (15(S)-HETE), on vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) migration both in vitro and in vivo. Among 5(S)-HETE, 12(S)-HETE, and 15(S)-HETE, 15(S)-HETE potentially stimulated more vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) migration. In addition, 15(S)-HETE-induced VSMC migration was dependent on Src-mediated activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription-3 (STAT-3). 15(S)-HETE also induced monocyte chemoattractant protei...

Cerebral vasospasm continues to be the leading treatable cause of death and disability in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage. Transluminal balloon angioplasty has been considered a safe and effective treatment for cerebral vasospasm resistant to maximal medical treatment. However, it should be performed in a timely manner, any delays could potentially increase the risk of hemorrhagic infarct. Angioplasty in the affected territory may be of benefit in improving not only the angiographic appearance but also the ultimate outcome for the patient, if performed in a timely fashion. Endovascular brachytherapy using a balloon catheter filled with Re-188 solution is a promising method for the prophylaxis of restenosis in peripheral blood circulation after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) treatments. Thereby about 20 GBq Re-188 with a specific activity of about 5 GBq/ml are used. The high ionisation density of the beta radiation with high energy leads to selective irradiation of the blood vessel wall near the catheter, whereas the surrounding tissue remains almost unaffected. However the hospital staff has to carry out some work steps within close range to the high activity during preparat...

Renal percutaneous transluminal angioplasty and stenting (RPTAS) represent the first therapeutic choice; however, there is doubt regarding the satisfactory long-term outcome for primary RPTAS. Currently, there is no clear evidence whether or not RPTAS prevents further progressive ren...

Arterial Angioplasty to Treat Hand Ischemia in a Radial-Cephalic Fistula.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Abstract A chronic hemodialysis patient was referred to interventional nephrology for evaluation of left hand pain. The patient had been receiving hemodialysis through a left radial-cephalic arteriovenous fistula and reporting hand pain during dialysis. Physical examination demonstrated cold hand and reduced capillary refill compared with the right hand. Clinical features, differential diagnosis, and physical examination findings were consistent with the diagnosis of hand ischemia due to dialysis access. Arteriography revealed >80% stenosis of the distal ulnar artery. Percutaneous balloon angioplasty successfully di...

Coronary artery perforation in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention: a single-centre report.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
The present study reports the incidence, management and clinical outcome of coronary perforations in 5 of 2991 patients (0.1%) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention, with non-debulking (percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty and stent) techniques. There was 1 type I, 1 type II and 3 type III perforations. One perforation was guidewire related, 2 perforations occurred after stent deployment and two occurred during stent-post dilatation with balloons. Restoration was obtained by prolong balloon inflation in three cases. Subsequent cardiac tamponade occurred in 2 patients, requiring pericardiocentesis. One...

CONCLUSIONS: Percutaneous anterograde evacuation of bile duct stones by dilating the papilla with an angioplasty catheter and expelling the stones with an occlusion balloon is effective, nontraumatic, and safe; this procedure maintains the anatomic and functional integrity of the sphincter. When performed by an experienced interventional radiologist, it is a viable alternative to choledochotomy. PMID: 19733869 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Radiologia)

Patients Who Have Material Causing Narrowing In Neck Artery Removed Rather Than Angioplasty Have Lower Chance Of Narrowing Recurring And Strokeemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Two Articles published Online First and in the October edition of The Lancet Neurology provide long-term data that show that, for patients with a narrowing of the carotid artery supplying blood to brain (carotid stenosis), removal of the material causing the narrowing(endarterectomy [surgery]) could be a better option than balloon angioplasty with or without stenting (endovascular treatment [ET]). Two studies published Aug. 28 in Lancet Neurology provide long-term data showing that for patients with carotid stenosis, endarterectomy could be a better option than balloon angioplasty with or without stenting (endovascular treatment). Surgery reduces the risk of both short-term and long-term stroke, and reduces the risk of repeat stenosis—which itself reduces the risk of stroke. (Source: Cardiovascular Business News)

Morbidity and Mortality Caused by Cardiac Adverse Events after Revascularization for Critical Limb Ischemiaemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Conclusion: AEs occur in >30% of CLI patients after LEAR. The most harmful AEs on the clinical outcome of CLI patients were heart-related, causing increased morbidity and death. Significant correlations between prescription of β-blockers and antiplatelet agents and prevention of AEs were observed. A persistent focus on the prevention of systemic AEs in order to ameliorate the outcome after LEAR for limb salvage remains of utmost importance. Therefore, we advise the implementation of an optimized care protocol by discussing patients in a strict manner according to a predetermined protocol, to optimize and standardize the p...

Long-Term Outcome Of Endovascular Treatment Versus Endarterectomy In Patients With Carotid Stenosis (CAVATAS Study)email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Patients with carotid stenosis, a narrowing of the carotid artery that supplies blood to the brain, could have a better treatment outcome by removing the material causing the narrowing with a surgery called endarterectomy. The other alternative is balloon angioplasty with or without the placing of a stent (small wire mesh tube in the artery) also known as endovascular treatment (ET). Coronary stenting is associated with an acute increase in plasma myeloperoxidase in stable angina patients but not in patients with acute myocardial infarction.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSIONS: In stable angina patients, coronary stenting is associated with an acute and transient increase in plasma MPO levels, but not in lactoferrin levels, with an enhanced response in the presence of complex lesions. In contrast, we observed no changes in plasma MPO and lactoferrin levels following stenting in patients with AMI. Given its pro-inflammatory properties, the potential implication of MPO release on clinical outcome in stable patients undergoing stenting needs further investigation.
