Possible etiological factors involve the "extreme male brain," defects in the mirror neuron system, vaccines, underconnectivity, disorders of central coherence, and many other more specific etiologies. Assessments or tests for autism are also reviewed. Characteristics of autistic individuals include repetitive behavior, language disorders, sleep disturbances, social problems, joint attention disorders, seizur...

We report the case of a 17-year-old African–American male patient with end-stage renal disease secondary to Wegener’s granulomatosis who developed CUA after 3 years on peritoneal dialysis. Treatment with sodium thiosulfate (STS) and hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy alone was ineffective, forcing the patient to undergo bilateral below the-knee-amputation (BKA) 5 months after presentation. It was not until peritoneal dialysis had been changed to daily hemodialysis, while continuing STS and HBO therapy, that the patient demonstrated complete resolution of CUA on repeat bone scan. Based on these findings, and...

Conclusions Hyperbaric O(2) has a more robust posttreatment effect than NBH on oxidative cerebral metabolism related to its ability to produce a brain tissue PO(2) >/= 200 mm Hg. However, it appears that O(2) treatment for severe TBI is not an all or nothing phenomenon but represents a graduated effect. No signs of pulmonary or cerebral O(2) toxicity were present. Jejunoileitis was induced in rats with subcutaneous injections of indomethacin (7.5 mg/kg) 24 h apart for two consecutive days, and animals were randomized into four groups. Group 1 received only indomethacin. Group 2 was treated with a daily dose of phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitor (theophylline or pentoxifylline) by oral gavage fo...

October 2, 2009 (Newswise) - More than 18-million people in the United States, or 6.3% of the population, have diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. Unfortunately, when someone becomes diabetic, chronic non-healing wounds often develop, most often in the legs and feet. These wounds can be uncomfortable and even life-threatening. There are many types of treatments. One of the most painless and successful is hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a specialized medical treatment inside a pressurized chamber, in which a patient breathes 100 percent oxygen at greater than normal...

Gangrene, non-clostridial myonecroses and intracranial abscesses are clinical entities for which hyperbaric oxygenation can be used therapeutically. Mortality and invalidity can be reduced by this means. Except for gangrene, HBO is used merely as an adjuvant for these diseases when conventional surgical, antibiotic and intensive therapy measures are not sufficient. The action of HBO is based on several points of attack: it reduces the formation of oedema, inhibits the production of alpha-toxins of the Clostridia, has a bacteriotoxic action, increases the effectivity of antibiotics and improves the immune defense system...

The Plasmodium falciparum mitochondrion is an organelle that presents structural and physiological characteristics different from mitochondria in other eukaryotes. Moreover, there are substantial differences in the properties of asexual and sexual mitochondria. One of the reasons is the adaptation of the parasite to different environments, in particular the great differences in oxygen tension between the host and the mosquito. In this review, we present a synthesis of the recent data on the ultrastructure, the genome and the physiology of the mitochondrion. We try to clarify the mitochondrial role in the intraerythrocy...

Repeated preconditioning with hyperbaric oxygen induces neuroprotection against forebrain ischemia via suppression of p38 mitogen activated protein kinase.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
We previously reported in rats that preconditioning with hyperbaric oxygen (HBO; 100% O(2) 3.5-atomsphere absolute (ATA), 1h/day for 5 days) provided neuroprotection against transient (8 min) forebrain ischemia possibly through protein synthesis relevant to neurotrophin receptor and inflammatory-immune system. A recent report suggested that HBO-induced neuroprotection is relevant to brain derived neurotrophic factor and its downstream event involving suppression of p38 mitogen activated protein kinase (p38) activation. In the present study, we first performed a dose comparison (1, 2, and 3.5 ATA) of HBO-induced neuropr...

The internet and satellite phones with digital images allow immediate access by patients from remote geographical locations to hospital based specialists who can assess cold injuries and advise on early field care. The severity of frostbite injuries can now be assessed with triple phase bone scanning, allowing early prediction of likely subsequent tissue loss. Early hy...

We read with interest the article by Kudsi et al , “Carbon dioxide embolism in a 3-week-old neonate during laparoscopic pyloromyotomy: a case report” (J Pediatr Surg 2009;44:842-845). As stated by the authors, the risk of clinically apparent carbon dioxide embolism is small, but they omitted the high occurrence of gas embolism detected by transesophageal echocardiography as demonstrated by Derouin et al in adults during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Gas bubbles appearing in the right cardiac chambers has fortunately no consequence in quite all cases, but they have a high potential risk (ie, systemic gas embolism) when ...

[Hyperbaric Oxygenation - utility in intensive therapy - part 1]email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Hyperbaric Oxygenation (HBO) is a medical treatment, in which a patient breathes 100 % oxygen inside a treatment chamber at a pressure higher than at sea level. The indication for HBO has to be considered whenever gas bubbles present in tissue or blood circulation (decompression sickness, gas embolism) or when a high oxygen delivery is of crucial importance (CO-intoxication, selected anaerobic soft tissue infections). HBO must never be considered as a substitute for conventional surgical or intensive care therapy, but as an adjuvant of (potentially) crucial importance. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for radiation-induced brain necrosis in a patient with primary central nervous system lymphomaemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
A 45-year-old man who developed brain radionecrosis in the right frontal and left temporoparietal lobes after receiving whole brain radiotherapy and stereotactic radiosurgery for primary central nervous system lymphoma. Since high dose steroid treatment failed and he declined to undergo surgery, he was referred to hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy. Both clinical and radiological findings improved after HBO therapy. Steroid requirements were also reduced. HBO therapy may have a potential value in treatment of brain radionecrosis. J. Surg. Oncol. © 2009 Wiley-Liss, Inc. (Source: Journal of Surgical Oncology)

Abstract: Endoscopy of the upper gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is a common medical examination. One of the rare but serious, albeit fatal complications of gastroscopy is venous air embolism. We performed a literature search with the keywords “air embolism”, “gastroscopy”, and “endoscopy”.There were 14 cases of air embolism associated with gastroscopy. The median age was 66years old (range 4months–80years old). The main presenting symptoms were neurological (n=9) and respiratory compromise (n=7). The main investigation used for diagnosis were CT (n=10) and ECHO (n=6). The main risk factor identified was mucosal ...
