The United States likely will fall well short of the Healthy People 2010 objective of reducing the prevalence of cigarette smoking among adults to less than 12 percent. According to a Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, or MMWR, article released Nov. 13, the proportion of U.S. adults who were cigarette smokers declined from 24.1 percent in 1998 to 19.8 percent in 2007. A study published in a recent issue of Academic Medicine found that medical students' feelings of empathy erode sharply during their third year of medical school -- just as they are shifting from largely didactic learning activities toward hands-on patient-care. And although students who eventually choose family medicine and other primary care specialties start higher on the empathy scale and dip less steeply, they, too, become more cynical, said the study. BOSTON — The influence of family physicians appears to be growing on Capitol Hill, if political donations and high-level access are any indication. When the American Academy of Family Physicians started its federal political action committee, FamMedPAC, 5 years ago, it had 100 donors and about $72,000 in contributions. Today, there are more than 3,500 donors, and in the last election cycle the PAC contributed more than $750,000 to candidates for federal office. (Source: Family Practice News)
