Today AARP lauds Bruce Koeppl, AARP Senior State Director of Iowa, with the Lyn Bodiford Award for Excellence in Advocacy. This annual award recognizes an outstanding AARP employee from either a state, regional or national Association office for his or her unrelenting service and achievement in advocacy efforts. It is named after Lyn Bodiford, an Associate State Director for Advocacy in Florida who died unexpectedly in 2003.

The IRS Wage and Investment Division recently lauded the AARP Foundations Tax-Aide program with its highest honorthe Commissioners Award. This is only the second time in the history of the award that the IRS has given this award to an external organization. The award recognizes the AARP Foundations Tax-Aide program on its 40th anniversary for its outstanding contribution as the nations largest free, volunteer-run assistance and preparation service. Today, AARP released a new survey asking Americans 45 and older how rising energy costs have impacted their day-to-day lives. Nearly 75 percent of those surveyed reported a rise in their home heating and cooling costs over the last year and nearly a third (29%) are cutting back on back-to-school shopping and more than half (57%) anticipate spending less this holiday season because of it.

A new report by AARPs Public Policy Institute finds promising signs and mixed results among state government efforts to balance long-term care (LTC) options under Medicaid. Unfortunately, according to the report, only four states spent more than 50 percent of their Medicaid LTC dollars for older people providing home and community based services (HCBS). The remainder of the states continues to spend the majority of their Medicaid LTC dollars for older people on institutional care, such as nursing homes.
