Raised blood pressure, as with HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria, exacts its greatest toll on the world's poor. A third of China's 1·3 billion people still live on US$2 a day or less, making the country home to one of the world's largest impoverished populations. Poverty is a powerful facilitator of chronic as well as infectious diseases, and is undoubtedly a major contributor to the 1·3 million premature deaths from increased blood pressure estimated by Jiang He and colleagues, in The Lancet today, to occur in China each year. These investigators followed up a cohort of nearly 170 000 Chinese adults for almost 10 yea...

What was the state of the US manganese market in 1916? The USA imported 308 000 tonnes of manganese in 1916, with a unit value of US$50 per tonne. What was the weather like in Seattle on Sunday, Sept 6, 1970? One could safely assume it rained—and indeed, it rained 9 mm and the temperature was a moderate 15°C. Finally, how many people died of HIV/AIDS in 2007? Even though HIV has captivated public discourse and funding, including over $5·1 billion in development assistance for health in 2007 alone, there are only rough estimates of its disease burden. Conclusion:
The TPB is applicable to students' care delivery intentions in the context of HIV and AIDS across the two SSA countries investigated. It is suggested that attitudes, subjective norms, moral norms and perceived behavioural control are key factors in students' willingness to treat AIDS and HIV infected patients and should be targets of interventions aimed at promoting quality health care delivery in this context. Abstract: A self-administered network-based questionnaire survey was conducted on 91 HIV-positive Chinese men having sex with men (MSM). Affiliation matrices were created to assess their networking pattern. The individuals’ preferential use of venues for sex partnership before HIV infection has changed over three time periods of 1997–2000, 2001–2003 and 2004–2006. Over time, there was a parallel increase in network density (density scores from 0.26, through 0.36, to 0.53) and degree centrality (from a median score of 9, through 12, to 16), suggesting that connectivity of MSM was becoming higher through sexual netwo...

We describe a 70 year old male with stage IV chronic lymphocytic leukemia complicated by aplastic anemia. Neurological examination and imaging revealed no significant abnormalities. At autopsy, the brain revealed multifocal cysts and free tachyzoites of Toxoplasma gondii with diffuse microglial nodules and no necrosis. To the best of our knowledge, this case represents the first report of the "encephalitic" form of toxoplasmosis in a non-AIDS patient.
