Conclusion: The RealTime test showed excellent analytical specificity and no cross-reactivity with low risk HPV genotypes that tested positive with hc2. Clinical sensitivity of the RealTime assay using archived routine cervical specimens was comparable to hc2. The RealTime test is an important new method applicable to cervical carcinoma screening and management of cervical precancerous lesions.

Conclusion: Genetic factors contribute to the evolution of vitiligo among Saudi families. Discouraging consanguineous marriage is a potential prevention measure. Genetic factors contribute to the evolution of vitiligo among tribal areas of the Saudi community probably through the high consanguinity rate. In that respect, family counseling can be attempted that would discourage consanguinity and combat probable interactive environmental and health factors.

Cutaneous endometriosis of the umbilicus is an unusual condition with unclear pathogenetic mechanisms that might be mistaken for a malignant condition. A 46-year-old woman presented with a cutaneous black mass in the umbilicus. The lesion was removed surgically and histological analyses revealed that it consisted of endometrial tissue. There was no recurrence at 18-month follow-up. Endometriosis of the umbilicus is a rare condition and the pathogenesis is not completely elucidated. According to one theory, intraperitoneal endometrial tissue is translocated during endoscopic surgery or other surgical procedures that inv...

A 74-year-old patient, suffering for 20 years from polycythemia rubra vera, was treated with hydroxyurea for 2 years. Intensive xerosis (ichthyosis-like) and violaceous papules on the dorsal hand surfaces were observed. There was also reddish purple periorbital erythema resembling "heliotrope erythema". Such a disease pattern has been described as "hydroxyurea-induced dermatomyositislike eruption" - a drug-adverse reaction associated with hydroxyurea therapy. The reaction has typical dermal features of dermatomyositis without any systemic symptoms (in the case of our patient, antinuclear antibodies absent and creatine ...

We describe a 51-year-old woman with sacroiliitis following a fall. She was treated with an intra-articular injection of 80 mg methylprednisolone into her sacroiliac joint, followed 2 days later by a cluster of herpetiform vesicles adjacent to the injection site. Swab of punctured vesicles demonstrated HSV type II by polymerase chain reaction. One plausible explanation is HSV reactivation secondary to localized immunosuppression from corticosteroid injection.

We report on an 84-year-old woman with chronic pruritic otitis externa and myringitis. Microbiological and mycological investigations failed to establish the cause, but histology revealed a large amount of Demodex mites. Topical treatment for this ectoparasite resulted in a complete remission. The myringitis was eventually treated successfully with myringoplasty. To the best of our knowledge this is the first case report on Demodex-induced otitis externa and myringitis.

We report a case of impetigo herpetiformis with an earlier onset during the second trimester of pregnancy (G4 P2) and an atypical postpartum flare-up. Consequently, the patient had a premature delivery with premature rupture of membranes, placental insufficiency, and intrauterine growth retardation.

CONCLUSIONS: The expression of CCR5 and CD103, which mediate recruitment into peripheral tissues, indicates that CD25+ FoxP3+ nTreg cells may be present in MMP lesions according to a specific homing. nTreg cells may contribute to directing the MMP immunoinflammation towards chronicity, and thus favor the cicatricial evolution of lesions.

UV irradiation of the skin leads to the induction of free radicals, carcinogenesis, and skin aging, and thus the use of beta-carotene in humans as a chaperoning agent is discussed. In the photohemolysis model, beta-carotene protects against the phototoxic effects of porphyrins. Beta-carotene should be used in erythropoietic protoporphyria, photosensitive diseases, and to reduce the effects of phototoxic drugs. Its effects on aging skin and on actinic keratosis have not yet been sufficiently studied.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small (20-22 nt), non-coding RNAs involved in post-transcriptional gene silencing. Their binding to the 3' UTR of target mRNAs influences the translation or stability of the transcripts. miRNAs have been shown to regulate several developmental and physiological processes, including stem cell differentiation and the immune response. Recent findings report their involvement in hair follicle morphogenesis (ablation of miRNAs from keratinocytes causes several defects, such as evagination instead of invagination), in psoriasis (skin-specific expression of miR-203 and psoriasisspecific expression of mi...

Skin metastases of lung cancer are rare. In over a 3-year period we found only 14 cases of skin metastases among 1,614 patients with lung cancer admitted to the University Clinic of Respiratory and Allergic Diseases in Golnik. The metastases are usually manifested on the skin of the chest. Skin metastases are symptoms of progressive disease, and usually a sign of a poor prognosis. The median survival time of lung cancer patients with skin metastases was 85 days from the time of detection of the skin lesion. Because skin metastases can be the first sign of the disease, the entire skin should be carefully inspected whene...

We present a patient with a typical course of PPP that had previously received a broad range of topical and systemic antipsoriatic therapies. They all had to be discontinued due to ineffectiveness or side effects. Being aware of the high efficacy of infliximab in generalized pustular psoriasis, we initiated this therapy. An initial improvement was followed by a substantial flare after 7 months, during which a combination treatment of infliximab with methotrexate was administered. Only subsequent monotherapy with efalizumab led to complete clearing up of PPP after 10 to 12 weeks of treatment without any adverse effects. Thi...

The authors describe the case of a healthy 46-year-old woman with a unilateral linear papular band on the left side of the trunk that followed the lines of Blaschko from the lower back extending to the left anterior side of her abdomen. The lesions were flat-topped, slightly elevated, violaceous, agglomerated lichenoid papules. The biopsy specimen demonstrated the typical histology of lichen planus. A working diagnosis of linear lichen planus was confirmed. Because congenital and/or nevoid skin disorders in a blaschkolinear distribution may have a delayed onset after birth, these lesions must be differentiated from acq...

There are two main processes that induce skin aging: intrinsic and extrinsic. A stochastic process that implies random cell damage as a result of mutations during metabolic processes due to the production of free radicals is also implicated. Extrinsic aging is caused by environmental factors such as sun exposure, air pollution, smoking, alcohol abuse, and poor nutrition. Intrinsic aging reflects the genetic background and depends on time. Various expressions of intrinsic aging include smooth, thinning skin with exaggerated expression lines. Extrinsically aged skin is characterized by photo damage as wrinkles, pigmented...

Conclusions: Confirming the earlier findings that BCC is a tumor with a Th2 cytokine microenvironment, this study further shows that BCC situated on the head and neck produce even more of certain Th2 cytokines (IL-4 and IL-5) and TNF-alpha, a crucial immunosuppressive cytokine released upon UVB irradiation.

We present the case of a 74-year-old white female admitted to the Department of Dermatology because of a tumor in the IV-V interdigital area of her right foot. A crimson, dome-shaped tumor with a granular, spongy surface (diameter 4 cm) had developed over a period of about 3 months. The biopsy, stained with H and E, revealed an anaplastic malignant tumor. Additional immunochemical staining with Melan A allowed us to make the final diagnosis: amelanotic malignant melanoma (MM). The melanoma was removed by amputation of digits IV and V, with partial removal of the metatarsal bones (Clark degree 5, Breslow thickness 9 mm). Se...
