Association Between Cortical Thickness or Surface Area and Divergent Thinking in Patients with Bipolar Disorder
CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that divergent thinking involves cerebral structures for executive control, mental imagery, and visual processing in patients with BD, and the right prefrontal cortex might be the most crucial of these structures.PMID:38623725 | DOI:10.1017/neu.2024.17 (Source: Acta Neuropsychiatrica)

Impact of Elevated Body Mass Index (BMI) on Cognitive Functioning and Inflammation in Persons with Post-COVID-19 Condition: A Secondary Analysis
CONCLUSION: We observed a significant negative correlation between BMI and cognitive functioning, and a significant positive correlation between BMI and inflammation in persons with PCC, suggesting a bidirectional interplay between BMI, PCC, and cognitive function; individuals with an elevated BMI may be at a greater risk of developing PCC and/or presenting with greater cognitive deficits mediated by chronic systemic inflammation.PMID:38605630 | DOI:10.1017/neu.2024.16 (Source: Acta Neuropsychiatrica)

Reactivation of herpesvirus type 6 and IgA/IgM-mediated responses to activin-A underpin long COVID, including affective symptoms and chronic fatigue syndrome
CONCLUSION: Reactivation of HHV-6, SARS-CoV-2 persistence, and autoimmune reactions to activin-A combined with activated immune-oxidative pathways play a major role in the pathophysiology of long COVID as well as the severity of its affective symptoms and CFS.PMID:38571295 | DOI:10.1017/neu.2024.10 (Source: Acta Neuropsychiatrica)

Plasma neurofilament light chain is increased in Niemann-Pick Type C but glial fibrillary acidic protein remains normal
This study investigated biomarker levels and diagnostic utility of plasma neurofilament light chain (NfL) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) in NPC compared to healthy controls.METHODS: Patients with NPC were recruited from a specialist assessment and management service. Data was available from an age and sex-matched healthy control group. NfL and GFAP were measured on Quanterix Simoa HD-X analysers and groups compared using generalised linear models. NfL levels were compared to, and percentiles derived from, recently developed NfL reference ranges.RESULTS: Plasma NfL was significantly elevated in 11 patients with ...
