Proteomics as a new paradigm to tackle Parkinson ’s disease research challenges
Publication date: December 2014 Source:Translational Proteomics, Volumes 4–5 Author(s): Virginie Licker, Pierre R. Burkhard Disease-modifying therapies capable to stop or slow Parkinson’s disease (PD) progression are still elusive due to severe shortcomings in the understanding of PD etiopathogenesis as well as limitations in routine clinically-based diagnosis precluding PD detection during its early course. Proteomics has recently emerged as one of the most attractive approaches to unravel the complex nature of PD processes and investigate PD potential biomarkers. In contrast to traditional candidate-based stu...

Integrative medicine and the nutrition transition: What we learn from history and how it can be applied?
Publication date: Available online 11 March 2015 Source:Advances in Integrative Medicine Author(s): Simon Spedding , Talitha Best History demonstrates how disease drives society to seek a remedy and industry refines this complementary medicine into a product. Researchers evaluate and modify the medicine before its acceptance by conventional medicine, often as a pharmaceutical. Whilst the accepted theory is that progress in conventional medicine is driven by medical research. Innovation in medicine is often driven by consumers and industry and acceptance by conventional medicine may incur substantial delays. This rais...

The gut–brain axis: The role of melatonin in linking psychiatric, inflammatory and neurodegenerative conditions
Publication date: Available online 20 January 2015 Source:Advances in Integrative Medicine Author(s): George Anderson , Michael Maes Recent work has highlighted the importance of immune inflammatory processes, oxidative and nitrosative stress (O&NS) and tryptophan catabolites (TRYCATs) in the aetiology of depression and many depression-associated disorders, including other psychiatric, neurodegenerative and wider medical disorders. A recently researched aspect of the aetiology and course of depression has focussed on the role of gut permeability and gut microbiota. Increased gut permeability is evident in man...

The integrative management of PTSD: A review of conventional and CAM approaches used to prevent and treat PTSD with emphasis on military personnel
Publication date: Available online 20 January 2015 Source:Advances in Integrative Medicine Author(s): James Lake Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may be the most urgent problem the U.S. military is facing today. Pharmacological and psychological interventions reduce the severity of some PTSD symptoms however these conventional approaches have limited efficacy. This issue is compounded by the high rate of co-morbid traumatic brain injury (TBI) and other medical and psychiatric disorders in veterans diagnosed with PTSD and unresolved system-level problems within the Veterans Administration and Department of Defense...

The characteristics of women using different forms of botanical medicines to manage pregnancy-related health conditions: A preliminary cross-sectional analysis
Conclusions Our analysis is a preliminary insight into an as yet unassessed aspect of maternity care. More in-depth investigation of the characteristics of women who choose to use herbal medicines, teas and aromatherapy during pregnancy would be beneficial to policy makers and health care professionals to provide safe, effective maternity care. Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) practitioners’ readiness for tobacco intervention training: Development and psychometric properties of a new measure
Conclusions CAM RTTI assessed three factors that can be critical to implementing effective tobacco intervention trainings for a CAM practitioner: (1) current tobacco intervention activity, (2) motivation/confidence and (3) comfort with non-CAM interventions. Moreover, it assessed these factors using language appropriate to CAM practitioners, providing the first measure, to our knowledge, specific to the development of tobacco intervention training for this group. Effects of Borrelia on host immune system: Possible consequences for diagnostics
Conclusions The immune status of the borreliosis patient needs to be considered, especially in Stage 3 in conjunction with clinical symptoms in the diagnosis. Borrelia has the ability to manipulate both the innate and active immunity and alter the cytokines secreted hence alter the path of the immune response. Immune parameters such as IFN-gamma/IL-10, lymphocyte markers, complement C3a, C4a, and total immunoglobulin levels may help to discriminate between stages and monitor treatment outcomes. The level of immune dysfunction in Stage 3 may depend on the number of co-infections delivered by a tick bite, such as Babesia, an...
