Starting Friday, November 20, Alberta’s H1N1 immunization program will expand to include all children under 18 years of age as of November 1, as well as their immediate family members and caregivers living in the same household. Starting Tuesday, November 17, Alberta’s H1N1 immunization program will expand to include all seniors over 75 years of age as of November 1, as well as their spouses or partners of any age.

Starting Saturday, November 14, Alberta’s H1N1 immunization program will expand to include two more groups - individuals 18 to 44 who have chronic conditions as well as household contacts of individuals who cannot be immunized.
On November 14 and ongoing, the highest risk groups will be eligible. They include:
children over six months and under five years (as of Nov. 1);
pregnant women;
people with chronic conditions aged 5 to 64 (as of Nov. 1); and,

Providing support and clarity around the use of community treatment orders is the focus of Bill 59 the Mental Health Amendment Act 2009, which was introduced in the Legislature on Nov. 2.

Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health has issued a public health advisory that recommends people avoid or limit their consumption of some species of fish caught from specific bodies of water in Alberta.

Albertans will save money on their generic prescription drugs and receive more advice about their medications from their local pharmacist under phase two of the government’s pharmaceutical strategy.

On October 13, the province will begin a two-part process to immunize Albertans against influenza through immunization clinics across the province.

Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Andre Corriveau has confirmed the H1N1-related death of the father of a participant at the World Skills Competition in Calgary.
The New Zealand resident died in a Calgary hospital Thursday, and although the official cause of death is yet to be determined, Dr. Corriveau said he wanted to reassure foreign visitors and others attending the competition that public health officials are taking all appropriate precautions. Alberta's first human case of West Nile virus (WNv) for 2009 has been confirmed in an adult male from the Calgary area. Although the man travelled in Saskatchewan during the first week of August, this case of WNv neurological syndrome is considered most likely to have been acquired in Alberta.

This fall, the Alberta government will offer a free seasonal influenza vaccine to all Albertans six months and older. Immunization can be obtained through public health clinics and some physician offices and pharmacists beginning in October.

Alberta has confirmed a second death associated with the H1N1 flu.  An Edmonton area woman with chronic pre-existing medical conditions passed away June 30. It is still not clear what role the H1N1 virus played in the middle-aged woman’s death.

On the morning of June 4, 2009, the Provincial Lab Information Technology room at University of Alberta Hospital (Edmonton) was burglarized. Items reported missing included two laptops used by the Provincial Lab to develop and test disease reporting tools.
Investigation into this issue is ongoing, however it has been confirmed that lab reports for communicable and reportable diseases were saved to the hard drives of both laptops.  Some of these lab reports may have contained personal identifiable information such as patient name, Personal Health Number or collection site. Alberta Health and Wellness and Alberta Health Services are urging Albertans to report any wild animal bites to their physician since wild mammals such as bats, coyotes and skunks may be rabies carriers. Over the last five years, a number of bats have tested positive for rabies in Alberta.
Albertans should avoid any contact with wild animals, such as handling bats. If you see a bat in your home and you are sure no human or pet exposure has occurred, confine the bat to a room by closing all doors and windows leading out of the room except those to the outside. Alberta Health and Wellness, together with Alberta Health Services, are advising Albertans, particularly seniors, that they can reduce their risk of acquiring West Nile virus (WNv) every summer by using simple preventive measures.
Preventive measures should include wearing protective clothing like pants and socks, applying a repellant with DEET, reducing time spent outdoors at dawn and dusk, and reducing the mosquito habitat in the yard at home.  These safeguards can prevent bites from the Culex tarsalis mosquitoes, the breed known to carry WNv in Alberta. With people getting out and enjoying the warmer weather, Alberta Health and Wellness, together with Alberta Health Services, are warning Albertans to be alert and take precautions against hantavirus.
Hantavirus is a potentially-fatal infection acquired from contact with mouse droppings or urine. Albertans are advised to take special care when working or playing in locations that may expose them to rodents. While deer mice are the species most likely to carry the hantavirus, all signs of rodent infestation should be treated with caution. Infected mice are found in all regions of Alberta. Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Andre Corriveau released the following statement on the pathology report for the northern Alberta woman who passed away recently.

New legislation aims to strengthen province's ability to recover health costs

The Crown’s Right of Recovery Act, Bill 48, which would enhance the province’s ability to recover costs resulting from wrongful acts or omissions, was introduced in the Legislature on  May 11.
“Albertans should not be responsible for health costs caused by the wrongful acts or omissions of others,” said Health and Wellness Minister Ron Liepert. “If passed, this legislation will help us recover these costs, which will benefit Albertans.” (Source: Alberta.ca from- Health and Wellness)

Alberta opens additional addiction and mental health treatment beds

The province has opened 50 new mental health and addiction treatment beds in south and central Alberta.  An additional 10 youth treatment beds will be opened near Rocky Mountain House later this spring, making treatment services more widely available in the province.
This initiative adds significantly to the number of treatment beds for Albertans with alcoholism, drug addiction, psychiatric conditions or combinations of these challenges and increases access to full-time, longer term intensive programs for at-risk youth and young adults.  These beds are part of the continuum of services for individuals with mental ...

Alberta confirms first fatality associated with H1N1 flu

Alberta has confirmed the first death associated with the H1N1 flu, of a northern Alberta woman with chronic pre-existing medical conditions.
It is not clear what role the H1N1 virus played in the fatality, which took place April 28. The cause of death was at that time assessed to be linked to chronic pre-existing medical conditions. After confirming May 5 that another family member had contracted a mild form of the H1N1 virus, further testing on the deceased was ordered by local health care officials. Proposed legislation that will enable government to implement announced changes to government drug programs was introduced in the Legislature on April 29. Bill 34, the Drug Program Act, will provide a legislative framework for the initiatives included in phase one of the Alberta Pharmaceutical Strategy, including the recently revised seniors’ drug plan.

Alberta confirms two cases of human swine influenza

Two cases of human swine influenza have been confirmed in Alberta, one in Calgary, and the other in northern Alberta.
Both individuals are male and have experienced a mild form of human swine flu. Neither were hospitalized during their illness. The male from northern Alberta has fully recovered from flu symptoms and the other male from Calgary has nearly recovered from symptoms. Government improves seniors' drug plan

The province has revised the proposed seniors’ drug plan to ensure it meets the government’s objectives of providing drug coverage that is affordable and predictable and supports those seniors who need it most.  Under the revised drug plan, the government continues to pay about 80 per cent of the costs of seniors’ drugs.
