Inflammatory cytokines in alcohol use disorder patients are lower in smokers and users of smokeless tobacco
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings may indicate that nicotine has anti-inflammatory effects in patients with AUD. Still nicotine use cannot be recommended as a viable therapeutic option to reduce alcohol-induced inflammation because it may cause other adverse effects. Future studies of cytokine patterns in relation to mental or somatic health conditions are warranted to carefully investigate the effect of nicotine, by monitoring the use of any tobacco or nicotine product.PMID:37208927 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15103 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)

Sex-specific biobehavioral regulation of persistent inflammatory pain by alcohol
CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that individuals may develop tolerance to alcohol's ability to alleviate both somatic and negative motivational symptoms of chronic pain over time. We also discovered sex-specific neuroadaptations in protein kinase A (PKA)-dependent phosphorylation of GluR1 subunits and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK 1/2) phosphorylation in nociceptive brain centers of animals receiving an alcohol challenge 1 week post-CFA. Together these findings illustrate a sex-specific regulation of behavioral and neurobiological indices of persistent pain by alcohol.PMID:37208939 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15104 (So...

Impact of prior alcohol use on the subsequent development of cancer cachexia in male and female mice
CONCLUSIONS: Prior alcohol consumption accelerates or worsens the onset of certain aspects of cancer cachexia in a sex dependent manner, with males being more sensitive to these effects, even when abstinence from alcohol intake is achieved prior to tumor initiation.PMID:37208964 | DOI:10.1111/acer.15100 (Source: Alcoholism, Clinical and Experimental Research)
